Desktop CPU Thread

Recommended Posts

Looks like Intel will counter AMD Ryzen 7 1800X with their Core i7-7820X (same amount of cores and threads and same speed but costs $100 more than the Ryzen 7 1800X). The winner will definitely be Core i7-7820X. But that's not all, Intel will also bring in 12, 14,16 and even 18 core CPUs (to all be named as Core i9) later this year!

Also the first results of AMD's Ryzen 1900X (16-core @3.39 ghz):

Maybe it's time for this thread to rename as "Intel and AMD Desktop CPU Thread"?

Intel had better explain the slow speed of a 12-core CPU: http://pcworld.com/article/3209624/computers/intels-12-core-core-i9-might-lose-the-megahertz-war-to-amds-ryzen-threadripper.html

And an update to the AMD Ryzen Threadripper (the 16 and 12-core CPUs are to be released sometime in early August): http://www.pcworld.com/article/3197184/components-processors/amd-ryzen-threadripper-prices-specs-release-date-and-more.html

So the 16-core 32-thread @ 3.4 ghz (up to 4 ghz overclocked) and 180 watts TDP for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X for about $1000 USD is a good bargain for gamer enthusiasts, and it can even support up to 1 TB of RAM!

And here's AMD's newest server chip, the EPYC (pronounced as epic) -- with the high-end 32-core @ 2.2 ghz CPU on a dual-socket costing at about an insane $4000 USD!:

64GB RAM is already overkill, why do I need 1024?

Also why call the pricing of epyc insane? It's a SERVER chip and not intended for home use.

It took 8 years for Intel to get from a 4-core CPU to a 10-core for consumers between 2008 and 2016. Somewhere in that period Intel created a Xeon Phi (for special servers and supercomputers) capable of running 58-72 core CPUs between 2012 to 2016. After that, it took AMD 18 months to get from a 8-core to a 32-core CPU for businesses and consumers.

If you think a 16-core CPU is already overkill for multitasking, wait until you see the newly released 32-core CPU called the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX. It runs at 3.0 ghz base clock to a 4.2 ghz boost clock with 32 CPU cores and a usage of 250 watt power.

Also as of this posting, there are six days left (depending on stock) for those who are interested to buy this 8-core CPU on sale. It's the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X for $150 USD, the lowest price ever for an 8-core CPU! https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819113429

Intel's 10th gen CPU chips are finally here, except the mainstream is focused on mostly laptops while the high-end ones now focused on more cores. The 10-core CPU is worth checking out since it's about $70-120 more from the Core i9-9900K (8-core/16-threads @ 3.6 ghz), but uses more power.

The fastest Intel 8-core CPU yet will soon be there this week for a cost of $513 USD: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3448620/intel-core-i9-9900ks-special-edition-launches-october-30-for-513.html

Finally an 8-core CPU from Intel able to dish out 4 ghz at base clock speed (and an all core turbo rate of 5 ghz) with a power rate of 127 watts TDP.

Intel has released the main specs the 10th gen Comet Lake chips and their prices (sorry Intel fans, no PCI-E 4.0 tech -- release date still TBD). All CPUs except low-end ones (like Celeron or Pentium) have hyperthreading technology:  https://www.pcgamer.com/intel-comet-lake-release-date-specs-performance/

Maybe Intel will zoom in PCI-E 5.0 or 6.0 tech by the time the 11th gen Core CPU chips come around.
