AMD & Nvidia Desktop Graphics Cards Thread

Recommended Posts

Here comes a new released overkill video card, the GeForce GTX Titan Black:

Also released alongside the GTX Titan Black is the GeForce GTX 750 Ti. It finally shown some energy efficiency (uses 60 watts TDP!)

Edit note: Still the Geforce GTX 690 is faster than GTX Titan Black and pretty soon GeForce GTX 790 will be next.

Looks like the new Nvidia GeForce Titan Z has been delayed for design changes.... hmmm.... http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/34620-nvidia-geforce-gtx-titan-z-delayed

One difference, one of them has to use three slots and still carries one fan.

It's kind of like driving a sportscar; people don't actually need it, but they get a boner from knowing that other people envy them. :P

These Titans are ranging from $1800-$2000 here in New Zealand. Absolutely ridiculous amount of money to spend on video card. April last year I spent $260 on a GeForce GTX 650 Ti, even to this day I think I over spent.

Instead of going for the Geforce GT 800 series (since all of them are in mobile laptops/tablets), Nvidia decided to release the 900 series instead.

For example, the new EVGA GeForce GTX 980:

Here's the classified version of EVGA Geforce GTX 980:

Last but not least, the EVGA Geforce GTX 970:

Designs haven't changed a bit, except for more VRAM, energy efficiency (165-185 watts instead of 250 watts) and DirectX 12 ready. Some people are saying that the GTX 980 is only 10% faster than GTX 780 TI.

You can find all the good info from this brand: http://www.evga.com/articles/00872/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-980-970/#1970

"Only." Right. There's still a power boost for less upfront cash while consuming less power. That's a huge improvement.

Wrong is a misnomer. There is 4GB but the last 500 MB is of lower quality and runs about 1/7th the speed of the rest. The most current driver update should disable that last 500 MB. They should have just said 3.5 GB up front, but they didn't. Someone ****ed up big time and it didn't get caught. Someone also probably lost their job.

It's not like it matters for me. I have a 980. xD

The Geforce GTX 980 Ti has been released:

Unfortunately, the GTX 980 Ti hasn't improved much on lower power efficiency (but the original GTX 980 does) since it uses some same features from the latest Geforce Titan.

I haven't posted any pics of GeForce GTX 960 and 950, and the prices of GeForce 960 and 950 aren't far from each other.

EVGA will soon be releasing a version of the GeForce GTX 950 without a 6-pin power connector (for $140 USD with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM), the next best low-power budget video card after GeForce 750 Ti. http://www.evga.com/articles/00990/evga-geforce-gtx-950-low-power

With GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 on the way, here's the preview of the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founder's Edition:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3071037/hardware/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-review-the-most-badass-graphics-card-ever-created.html

With 2560 config cores, 8 GB of GDDR5X VRAM, 10 ghz memory clock and 180 watt power, this new Direct X 12 video card is a powerful beast compared to the Titan, Quadro and Tesla cards. It should work very well with recent games and apps using virtual reality, 4K resolution and multiple monitors.

Finally the replacement to the Geforce GTX 750 Ti, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (only uses 14nm wires, 75 watts, 4GB GDDR5 Vram, and no need to plug in another connector), perfect for the people who are looking for a budget video card:

Nvidia has more info on the GeForce 1080 Ti:

http://www.pcgamer.com/here-are-all-the-new-gtx-1080-ti-graphics-cards

Most interesting statistic is that the GeForce 1080 Ti comes with 3584 CUDA cores and it claims to be 35% faster than the GeForce 1080. I will see the benchmarking test results of this soon.

The only new video cards released this year are AMD Radeon cards. While I am not going to mention AMD Radeon RX 580 very much, the Geforce 1060 still beat the odds on most games: https://www.techspot.com/review/1393-radeon-rx-580-vs-geforce-gtx-1060

Also competing with the Geforce Titan Xp comes the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier using 16 GB of HBM2 VRAM (high bandwidth memory v2) -- and both of those video cards are pricey for gamer enthusiasts:
https://pro.radeon.com/en-us/product/radeon-vega-frontier-edition
and
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3202659/components-graphics/hands-on-amds-radeon-vega-frontier-edition-vs-nvidia-titan-xp.html

Also coming in August AMD will release the Radeon RX Vega to compete with GeForce 1070 and 1080 all using HBM2 VRAM:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3212206/computers/radeon-rx-vega-64-pricing.html

Problem is with the recent Radeon cards, none of them have great energy efficiency. Just wondering if AMD Radeon will learn something from AMD Ryzen (and recent Nvidia GeForce cards) and try to lower power consumption on powerful video cards.

I believe by next year Nvidia will feature a new GeForce generation of cards using HBM2 instead of GDDR5.

AMD is not even done presenting new video cards and CPUs. Here comes the most berserk, ludicrous, overkill and pricey Radeon graphics card in the market today for game developers, the AMD Radeon Pro SSG (cost is $7000 USD!!! -- enough to call it the Lamborghini of AMD Radeon):

i4yXQeBMNwTgFZoTfUPyUY-650-80.jpg

It carries 16 GB of HBM2 ECC VRAM and an integrated 2 TB flash SSD. The lower end version of that is the AMD Radeon Pro WX9100 costing around $2100 USD without the ECC memory support. Both of those cards are perfect for early 8K (4320p) gaming. Source: http://www.pcgamer.com/amd-radeon-pro-ssg-pairs-vega-with-2tb-of-memory/

Can that card beat the performance of a Geforce 1080 Ti or even the fastest Tesla/Quadro card? Too early to find out.

Here comes a new behemoth, Nvidia's Titan V, using 12 GB of HBM2 VRAM and over 5100 cores: http://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-releases-volta-based-titan-v-for-pc

5gwBtvywaZbtZBeHJfesFn-650-80.jpg

At $2999 USD, that's one of the priciest video cards in the market.

Question is.... will its speed beat the AMD Radeon Pro SSG?

Is Nvidia is trying to become Apple, or the Lamborghini of video cards? Who would try going for an massive overkill 48 GB GDDR6 VRAM video card worth $10k USD? It's also the world's first ray tracing GPU (which I had no clue what that feature does). Too bad Nvidia wasn't going for HBM2 VRAM for the Quadro series because that would have been the main part of speed bandwidth. The Titan V already uses HBM2 VRAM.
