Half-Life 3 is in development

Recommended Posts

It might have been confirmed through this picture of a real HL3 t-shirt:

This epic game is probably in development while Valve is developing Counterstrike Global Offensive. Valve is already a dozen miles behind on this HL development and all other FPS game series are way ahead of this. Although it's been over 11 years since Half-Life 2, Valve may release something worse than Steam when HL3 comes around.

Updated 10/22/2012:
It has been recently rumored (not confirmed and announced by Valve yet) by other sources that HL3 might be released somewhere in the 2013-2014 season, stating that the game will have a huge makeover with gameplay elements similar to the last two Elder Scrolls games. Finally, some roleplaying in FPS. My guess is most likely to be Half-Life 3 vs. COD Black Ops 3 in 2014.

Wasn't HL2 Ep3 already in development, with the ending of Freeman's storyline, but not HL itself?

Valve probably decided to pass that and head on to HL3 anyway. Freeman's storyline doesn't end unless he terminates the g-man. :P

Actually, only a shirt of a Valve employee indicates something named HL3 that might (not) exist, so I wouldn't keep my hopes high.

Valve tease Half-Life 3 at Spike Video Game Awards?

Valve have always been masters of secrets, as we all know Gabe has been playing Half-Life 3 for a few years now and just wants to master it completely in every way possible before releasing it. Until, that is, the Spike Video Game Awards over the weekend.

The VGA's saw quite the number of teases, and announcements and this nugget of info is no different. Steam's message boards have been going absolutely crazy trying to figure out if Valve actually teased the upcoming game, with theories heavily relying on a half-speed YouTube video of Portal 2's AI "Wheatley" giving a speech.

The center of attention lies on a line of text at the top of the video, which is written in Greek. The translation for this text, according to the Steam message boards, is "OBSERVATION SATELLITE "LANTHANUM.""

218902valveteasehalflif.jpg

Lanthanum (again, according to the Steam forums) comes from a Greek word that translates to "to lie hidden." The word is also significant, as it begins with a lambda symbol in Green. That symbol? Well, it's iconic to the Half-Life franchise.

But, you know these pesky Internet Detectives... there's more. Lanthanum has an atomic number of 57, and as a commenter pointed out, this year's E3 falls between June 5 and June 7. So there's your 5 and 7. There's also the element, which is in group three of the periodic table. Also, the number there is significant when Wheatley reads off his coordinates at the end of the clip: "one, one, one". One plus one plus one is... three.

Valve have replied to GameSpot on this story, when they asked whether people were reading too much into the video, with a Valve representative responding with just, "Yep."

What do you think? Could we see Half-Life 3 announced, or teased, or something at E3, 2012?

Valve's Chet Faliszek Nukes Rumors of Half-Life 3

Earlier this month, a Valve employee was spotted by Chandana Ekanayak, art director and executive producer at Uber Entertainment, at a local game development event wearing a Half-Life 3 T-shirt. While the logo itself was inconsistent with the design of the Half-Life 2 logo (reversed actually), the shirt clearly read "Half-Life 3" underneath the design.

Since then, numerous Half-Life 3 rumors have surfaced. One stems from a website located at www.black-aperture.com that, at this moment, features nothing but a blank, black page. But at one time it featured the correct Half-Life 3 logo, and the logos for Steam, Valve and Source lined along the bottom. A hidden Aperture Science logo was also reportedly seen within the Half-Life 3 symbol by slightly tilting the screen.

Then a source for Valve's supposed ARG, Doug Rattmann, reportedly tweeted a countdown for a possible Half-Life 3 announcement, writing "Min: 60 days, Max: Unknown." The tweet followed the release of the Wheatley acceptance speech video from the VGA's that supposedly had hidden Half-life 3 messages embedded within. What didn't help stifle the Half-Life 3 speculation was Rattmann's "It Begins" tweet following the video.

If that wasn't enough to get the Half-Life 3 wheels spinning (and for good reason), somewhere in the timeline, Valve boss Gabe Newell said to leak Half-Life 3 details in order to gain consumer interest. Getting a little tired of the trolling, Valve's Chet Faliszek finally jumped on the official Steam forums and laid to rest any question about the third installment being in production. Turns out Half-Life 3 may not be in development after all.

"You are being trolled," he writes. "There is no ARG. Wheatley's speech was set in Portal 2 fiction - that is all. There has been no directive from Gabe to leak anything. That is all false."

"I just want to say this so there is no confusion," he added. "This is the community trolling the community, nothing more. While it is nice to see people excited about anything HL, I hate seeing people be trolled like this."

Bummer. See what happens when you wear a cool shirt to a party? All hell breaks loose.

SAD! I wonder what's with the delay for the Half Life franchise anyways? Where's my Half Life 2 Episode 3? Where's my Half Life 3? Or any DLC to continue the adventures of Gordon Freeman??? :( :( :(

With the rise of the other popular game series such as Call of Duty and GTA, Valve is probably pissed at attempting something new to pwn them.

If Valve wanted to make a new Half-Life game, it needs a new game engine with a new environment (not the upgraded ordinary Source engine), and if Portal materials are to be used, it should be used. I mean even the Frostbite 2 engine pwns most other game engines by now.

If EA wanted to make a Half-Life game, they need license rights from Valve so maybe either Bioware or DICE can do it. I would love to play a Half-Life game using the Frostbite 2 engine. :P

Sorry for the bump. About one year later, it's has been rumored to be true that indeed Half-Life 3 is in development, but the release date has yet to be confirmed and announced by Valve.

All of this latest news is now mentioned in the first post of this thread.

Looks like Half-Life 2: Episode 3 has gone from vaporware to Half-Life 3 instead. Some people wanted HL3 to be the final chapter of the series and I would really want that to happen since some are already getting tired of the series. Freeman should be talking by then when the new form of roleplaying takes center stage in this FPS genre.

Half life three will come when pigs can fly and the USA wins a world cup.

The only time USA can win a World Cup is when they play themselves... ala baseball.

You know this will end just as well as it did for Duke Nukem, all those years of anticipation, and what did we get? Stale poop.

You mean the weak quality of gameplay.

I hope HL3 will not wind up like Duke Nukem Forever with old relic gameplay and just improved graphics.

There's no reason what so ever to expect Half-Life 3 (if it's ever released) to be as horrible as Duke Nukem Forever is. Valve has a serious economy to rely on and a very talented palette of developers.

New update with new rumors:

and

Hmmm. Source Engine 2 with a possible Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3 and some other games on the line.

Well bring it on, because Source Engine 2 needs to compete with Frostbite 3 engine.

I don't think there will be Half-Life 3 until after Call of Duty 12 and not Black Ops 3. ;)

They probably printed that shirt 10 years ago, when they weren't heading the Duke Nukem Forever road yet :P

Well it appears that Left 4 Dead 3 could be first in line, possibly on a new Source Engine 2, but that's just another rumor leak. But still the Source Engine is almost as outdated as the IW engine used in the COD series.

Maybe the working name of HL3 is L4D3, just in case this happened?

J/K.. Riding on the zombie wave for a little longer seems like a profitable and safe bet anyway ;) Who doesn't love zombies?!!

Unfortunately I was visiting a cemetery for a fresh burial yesterday. It's a famous and old cemetry, but it had those giant electrical towers running through it. I guess next time I visit I shall take a snap. But I could help thinking about all the stories about electrical power lines and the possible affects on the human bodies and then I realised *our* worst nightmares could come to pass... mutant zombies!!!
