Announcing C&C: Online - A Community Run C&C Server

5 posts in this topic

We have had a few teasers, and people have had many questions, and now we have been given the all clear to announce C&C: Online, the new community based initiative to prolong the online life of your favourite Command & Conquer games. So please read the following announcement below, it explains everything and it should give you an idea of how it will work.

Hello everyone! We are proud to present to you C&C:Online, the community-driven GameSpy replacement!

Like us on Facebook!

Below you will find all the information we currently have to share.

WHAT IS C&C:ONLINE?
C&C:Online is a GameSpy emulating server for modern Command & Conquer, created and hosted by Revora.

It's based on our T3A:Online project for BFME, adapted to work for all the Command & Conquer games affected by the GameSpy closure (Generals, Zero Hour, C&C 3, Kane's Wrath, Red Alert 3).

GameReplays.org will be working with Revora in managing, developing and promoting the new online service.

C&C:Online lets you use the game's native online interface, exactly like you are used to now (no LAN). It works by using a simple launcher that redirects traffic to our server. In order to participate in the new service, you will need to download the C&C:Online launcher for your game(s), and create an account at Revora. Your Revora account name is then synchronised to be your new "EA" account name. Don't worry, you will still be able to choose different nicknames.

While we cannot realistically expect everybody that is currently using the official online service to move to C&C:Online with us, we hope that our service can convince a sizeable number of users. We have every reason to look forward to a bright future for our games and communities.

C&C:Online is supported by:

WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED?
Very soon. Make sure to keep an eye on the C&C:Online Facebook page.
Once it is released, we will post links to the new C&C:Online website, from which you will be able to download the C&C:Online clients, as well as find installation instructions and links to support and community forums at Revora.

HOW MUCH IS DONE?
We are confident that we can release C&C:Online for all five affected C&C titles (Generals, Zero Hour, C&C 3, Kane's Wrath, and Red Alert 3) simultaneously, in time for the GameSpy shutdown.

The first release will contain the following features for all titles:

  • Playing games
  • Hosting and joining games
  • Chat functions
  • Buddy systems
The server is still under heavy development at the moment in order to make it by June 30. The basics (login, chat, buddy system) for all games are working, but the listing of Generals and Zero Hour games in the lobby is still somewhat problematic. We're doing our best not to let you guys down!

WHAT WILL BE DONE LATER?
After the initial release, we will continue development to add more features.
We will be working on:
  • Statistics
  • Ranking
  • Automatch systems
Together with GameReplays we are looking into a method to verify users that want to keep their old nicknames (to prevent impersonation), and to link these to existing statistics and rankings.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?
We need this news to be spread as far across the global C&C community as possible, so help us spread the word!

We could also really use some donations! Revora is a non-profit association, and so all proceeds go towards server costs and improving our infrastructure.

In the same vein, if you happen to own a VPS hosting company and have a spare server, we would really appreciate the support. We will host C&C:Online on Revora's dedicated server for now, but with so many players this is probably not a viable long-term solution.

So as you can see this is a community based initiative to replace GameSpy. You can check out more on the C&C:Online forum at Revora.

Ain't that some news!

Looking forward to try it. I hope they will keep it simple and effective.

Statistics, ranking and automatch systems seems like really great ideas that might be able to kick some new life into the C&C online scene.

Well, they kinda still work and the pros won't have it any other way :P

The account takeover time has come! To claim a multiplayer account as yours, register on the Revora forums if you haven't already and make a thread in the new Fair Play and Member Management section. Here is a guide on how your application should look like. It might take time to verify your account as more people apply.

      Hi,I'm Pasha,
I like to play zero hour AOD maps. I made a website to share my AOD maps (3 GB) collected since 2005. I classified AOD maps according to number of players, map makers and types like Air, race, AOA, Compstomps etc. You can start to download maps even now. I already uploaded more then 250 aod maps. Uploading continue. Visit website periodicly to reach new uploaded maps.
You can sent me your AOD maps to upload and share with AOD players. I can add you map maker list if you made more then 5 AOD maps.

In this week's Throwback Thursday feature, we look back at the Global Conquest mode from the PC version of C&C 3: Kane's Wrath. Advertised as "Risk on steroids" (David Silverman, 2008), it involved the game's three main factions randomly placed on the globe, each trying to achieve their own goals - cover one third of the planet under your influence for GDI, generate unrest in 24 cities for Nod, build 9 Threshold towers for the Scrin, or just eradicate all enemies the good old-fashioned way. The metagame on the world map was turn-based, with the ability to build, upgrade and destroy bases and task forces, even giving players the ability to make up their own task forces. This mode seems to have been largely influenced by the War of the Ring mode from EALA's Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II.

Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. Don't forget to check out the Throwback Thursdays archives if you've missed a week. Check back again next Thursday for another Throwback. Send in your ideas for future instalments. We also encourage you to share this on social media using the hash tags #ThrowbackThursday, #CnCTBT and #CNCNZTBT.

In this week's Throwback Thursday feature, we look back at the two units which the fans wanted to see in C&C 3: Tiberium Wars and were returned in the Kane's Wrath expansion - the Steel Talons versions of the Titan and the Wolverine. Filling the same roles as in C&C: Tiberian Sun, these redesigned mechs were a worthy throwback to the Second Tiberium War, and were no weaker than their Third Tiberium War counterparts from any side. In fact, they got a few purchasable upgrades of their own - the railgun and adaptive armour for the Titan, and AP ammo for the Wolverine.
