Battle Zone 1998 has been remastered

Recommended Posts

There's a new thing that's just come out called Battle Zone Redux. Look it up. They made it look better but that's about it, I see no indication that the ai improved. If all goes well they'll remaster Battle Zone 2.

So it was a remake of the original. The original was great but Battlezone 2 wasn't that great.

I liked BZ 2 for its incredible graphics which I couldn't even run at the time (then my pirated disk died or they did some anti-piracy thing). BZ2 still looks beautiful today, all of the lighting effects and glowing weapons/utility vehicle beams, structures being built from nothing and all that. The system for commanding squads was very good in BZ 2 so I prefer it over the original. BZ 1 had dumb ai but it was manageable - turrets and gun towers you can set up and leave alone, other vehicles can be ordered to follow the player. I played those games when I was 8 - 12 years old so I don't recall much besides hitting in a lot of cheat commands!

Battlezone 1998 is one of my favorite games. It is a nice blend of FPS and RTS and it has quite decent 3D graphics for 1998. Nice to see that they have released a remastered version on Steam. :)

The secret disco cannon was the best.

One good thing about BZ 1 is that you have a set number of units which makes the player use them wisely. In BZ 2 you can save scrap and build a massive force where losses don't matter so much.

The secret disco cannon was the best.

In BZ 2's files there was a wav file of a little girl singing itsy bitsy spider. I'm not sure if it appeared in the game. I remember a disco cannon, was it a cheat or was it hidden in an early American mission?

Remembered wrong, it's a rave gun, not a disco gun. It's found on the first American mission.

But... Battlezone 1998 was kinda bad...

I've just discovered this.

The missions with furies are pretty bad. There's only one kind of enemy: the fury. In the remaster they are super fast, and can travel the map in 3 seconds. Plus they lower to attack and fire a homing missile, then they disappear upward before you can destroy them. In one mission there isn't even a base to attack - furies appear at random to attack your scavengers, and the mission is to harvest 75 scrap, not good for a late mission. I'd like them to remaster BZ2 and see if that was any good. I haven't played it for 13 years.

After playing BattleZone lots of the past months I'd say it's pretty damn good. I beat the entire game on hard last week, then I played the trickiest missions again to prove it wasn't luck. They have a patch out this week which improves performance but I haven't installed it yet. Cool game ... strategy, hover physics, tactics and strategy.
