No Man's Sky

Recommended Posts

So I picked this game up for PS4 today. Always wanted a space exploration game (I tried the Elite Dangerous demo on Xbox One, didn't like it). As for No Man's Sky, I like how the game looks, there is so much potential to have a true space adventure here. But sadly the game is an unstable mess. I've never had a PS4 game (or any console game) crash like this one. I could only play for about an hour and half and it crapped out twice, loosing all progress.

The lack of an early tutorial made made feel totally lost, you just get thrown in the deep end on some random planet and told to repair vital equipment on your ship. Took me most of the first hour just figuring out how to do this. And then just as I was getting the hang of things the first hard crash happened, the game totally froze up. Restarting, I had to do all the same things again. This time though, I got attacked by some sentinel droids, I've got basically nothing to fight them off with so they kicked my ass. So I get killed. Third attempt, starting all over again, I begin to collect the resources I need to repair things, I get attacked by the same sentinel droids, getting wasted and the game crashes yet again during this attack. Since I was getting pissed off I ended my No Man's Sky experience there. I haven't even taken off in my ship to leave the planet yet.

So I'm a little disappointed in the game right now. Apparently there is a patch coming for PS4 and PC that hopefully sort out the crashing issues.

Anyone else playing or planning to get No Man's Sky?

Most of the highest rated reviews on Steam are saying the game is worth only 1/3 of its current price. One of them I liked worded it as a AAA price for a pre-alpha game. If I ever come across a compelling reason to get it (which has not happened yet), it won't be until the price comes way down.

To me, it looks mostly like another one of those resource gathering/crafting games. A fancy one, but not the ultimate universe explorer it was supposed to be.

If I ever buy it, I'll get it when the price is way down. For me, these games tend to be the most exciting thing ever... for two hours , then I get bored and never play them ever again.

**** this over hyped game I'm done with it and I barely scratched the surface. Seemed so promising but has failed to captured my attention. It frustrated me. It now lives in the box waiting to be sold to someone who may enjoy it more.

A friend of mine in Nelson mentioned No Man's Sky before its release, and The Warehouse on Blenheim Road here in Christchurch had a sign up saying that NMS had sold out (last week). I don't believe the hype. My perspective: wait until Microsoft buys it like they did Minecraft. NMS is currently a PS4 exclusive so there seems to be hype around it. It's made by a small studio but it's being talking about like it's a blockbuster. Instead of asking how that's possible we should ask what merits the publicity. I hope they patch it up really good. Until then, money could be spent on other studios that have more realistic goals - the idea of a massive space exploration game is quite extravagant for a small studio.

Because Microsoft totally bought anyone except Mojang, right?

No it isn't.

It isn't, it's just that Hello Games turned out to intentionally overhype the game and promise more things that were actually in there.

Or, if you're more of a visual type... (from 10:14 onwards)

Getting to be = future tense. No Man's Sky was overhyped, and that is old news.

I guess you are aware of you can't accelerate in space, don't you? Yeah, i love space games which totally ignore real physics.

I'm confused, is that a sarcastic joke on something someone said? I mean you obviously can accelerate in space...

Well I mean it's "exclusive" on consoles so far - not counting PC. I know that's a stupid way of putting it. My point is that, if there's a new release on PS4 which isn't on Xbox, then you can bet that it'll be overhyped with Sony's help. No Man's Sky is apparently "indy" but it seems they have friends in marketing companies, judging by the publicity that this game receives, even well-before its release.

For those who haven't heard, Steam, Sony, and Amazon are now offering refunds for No Man's Sky regardless of play time.

I hope this serves as a good lesson for overhypers, because while Hello Games is not an innocent victim, this wasn't all their fault either.

Unless they can bring out some pretty solid patches very quickly, they could be brought to ruin, a fate only partially deserved.

Yet another example of why you should never, EVER pre-order a game. Hell you should never EVER buy a game on launch.

Its sad that this **** keeps on happening again and again. :(

I haven't heard nor played NMS... are the refunds because

  1. it's boring
  2. missing advertised content
  3. because it's broken (crashes)

Most of the feedback I've glanced over seemed like the game was simply boring.

The refunds are probably because people are complaining, not because there is something wrong with the game.

If however, you meant why are people complaining, then it is all of the above, but especially 2.

A puddle has more depth than NMS. What a waste of an idea. On the surface, it sounds incredible. Once you dig in, there's nothing to it and you might as well play with yourself to Dead or Alive Xtreme 2.

Doubt anything will come of it. They didn't pull an Ubisoft and blatantly leave out physical ****ing media from a collector's edition. Hell, even they didn't get sued for that complete **** up.

"No Man's Sky changed a great deal this morning, getting new modes and a ton of gameplay tweaks thanks to update 1.1, the largest one yet," reports Kotaku. Calling it "the first of many free updates," the game's developers introduced a new Minecraft-style Creative Mode which "allows players to explore the universe without limits, and build a huge base," plus a tougher Survival Mode, "creating a much more challenging endurance experience." The Next Web calls it "features that really should have been in the game from Day One."

Please wait while we ship features that should have existed on day one - the era of internet-connected games :naughty:

The base building sounds like fun but not enough to bring me back. This game ****ed me off so much. What a waste of $90.
