I am playing The First Decade pack's version of the fist Command & Conquer game (Tiberian Dawn I think). I remember the unit pictures from the dos version and want them back, very, very much.
And btw, any tips on whether one can expect a 1.03 patch for TFD?

Then play DOS C&C.

Well I have found a program that can manipulate mix files and got the demo that has the old pictures. I have already managed to extract a sample minigunner picture (E1ICON.SHP) from DEMO.MIX but cannot find it's counterpart in CONQUER.MIX in TFD folder (or in any other .mix file). I seriously hope unit icons are not hardcoded there... I also tried simply adding the icon file to CONQUER.MIX, hoping it will overwrite the new icon choice, but it didn't work.
Generally I think the high resolution is fine, vga is a long dead technology. Cnc95 plays so much nicer than DosCnc. Only those pictures...

The C&C95 icons are in deseicnh.mix, tempicnh.mix and winticnh.mix. They're separate icons for each palette to allow maximum use of the theater-specific colours in the rendered icons. Because they're theater sensitive, they're renamed from .shp to .des / .tem / .win
This means that if you want to replace the icons, you'll have to do it three times
You'll also have to double their resolution, since C&C95 icons are 64x48.
Also note that in C&C95 there's no way to make the colours adapt to the side's colour as they do in DOS C&C. They'll just always be yellow, even when playing with Nod.
And they'll look very crappy & blocky in the smooth C&C95 interface.
I made an addon to get DOS C&C on TFD. So if you don't mind the low game resolution, get it here:

Right now I have already swapped minigunner icon. There are quite a lot of icons so I'll think of a method of automating the process, but one way or another I should finish what I started sooner or later. I could provide the results then for someone else to use.
And btw, do you know of any way of capturing game screen by any chance? There is something messed with palette change (8-bit <-> 16-bit) when the game is running, so all programs return either almost black screen or quirky colours.

Ow, I never saw that final response. Black screen with VDMSound usually just means you didn't get the sound settings right though... it's a classic mistake. Just compare the VDM settings with the settings in C&C's CONQUER.INI. Once they're the same, it should work.

Yeah.. just press print screen ingame, paste the messed up screenshot in any editor that allows palette editing (I advise Paint Shop Pro) and then load the original C&C palette of the corresponding theater back into it.
Just make sure that, when loading the palette, you make it "Keep Palette Index". So definitely DON'T use the "match nearest colour" option, since that'll obviously screw things up.
Now, for that to work you need the C&C palettes in a palette format which the editor can use.
I THINK the Copy as PAL (JASC) option in XCC Mixer doesn't work though. But there are some other ways of getting the palettes:
-use XCC to convert some SHP file to PCX using the palette you need, and then open that PCX in your editor and save the palette from it.
-extract the palette and use some tool (like the one included in the old RAmix) to convert the palette.
-Get my JASC palettes for C&C1 here (file is prntscr_pals.zip)

There is a single pic so this must change the palette, right?[/quote]Indeed, when I had run the dos version I recalled that the unit icons were yellow for GDI and red for NOD. I will propably reconsider making a special red version of the mod for NOD fans.
I also noticed some other differences between dos and 95 versions. In dos ver. it ticks when progress is made while building and the screen is shaken when something big is destroyed. Any way of restoring this?
