    TD Skirmish?

BTW, how does the AI behave in real C&C MP games? I think I've read somewhere that it can "take over" the side of a resigned human player, is that true? Does the AI do anything besides using all its offensive units to go after the human players?
  2. Just looked through this thread, it's pretty impressive Tell me, is it possible to play C&C over Internet through DOSBox using the LAN option?

    6-mission DOS C&C demo

Ah, now I noticed that they are 8-bit sounds, while everything else is 16-bit.

    6-mission DOS C&C demo

If you set the demo to Gravis Ultrasound with GUS emulation properly enabled in DOSBox, infantry screams stutter noticeably. I suppose that this is for the same reason that the DOS version's infantry scream/yell sounds end in loud clicks in C&C95 (if you use the DOS sound files with C&C95, that is). With SB sound, this does not happen in the demo. Also, if you convert all demo/DOS sound effect files to WAV with XCC Mixer, the result will be recognized by XCC Mixer as WAV files except for the yell files, which will be tagged as "unknown".

Guess that was because all those who prefer playing online just... play online instead of talking about playing online

Oh, I thought you mentioned somewhere that the Spanish version was made using the voice clips from TS... Well, I just thought that the civilian voices were missing altogether, just like in the German version of RA1, but judging from the fact that the RA1 demo also does not include civilian voices, and that the German SOUNDS.MIX has some obsolete sound effects files that aren't even found in the English version, I guess they just used an older version of the file in the German version of RA1, where the civilian voices were replaced with blanks.
  7. I'm fairly certain there's a project that has the goal of adding remixed tracks and video briefings from Red Alert: Retaliation to the game, perhaps if you google that (sorry I can't remember where I read about it or if it is still active) and find this project, you could find useful info there. BTW, shouldn't this be in the modding sub-forum?

Nyer, may I ask about the other language packs included in the patch? It is my understanding that besides the Japanese speech that comes from console versions, other languages (at least, French and German) come from official localizations, right? On the other hand, you mention in the changelist that some speech files in German and French were added or replaced (using voices from TS I suppose). Many unit responses seem to be duplicates, and it seems there were originally no voices for the civilians in French and German, like in RA1. BTW, are the "robot" sound replacements for infantry screams and crush sound in the censored German version identical to those in RA1, or different? Also, I remember that the German version of Sega Mega Drive Dune: The Battle for Arrakis is different from the German version of PC Dune II; were there any such differences between non-English PC versions of C&C and its console ports? Oh, and Happy Birthday! (There seems to be no "party hat" smiley here, but and and should probably make up for it )

    6-mission DOS C&C demo

BTW, Nyer, what was the original way of distribution of the demo CD? Was it bundled with other games or inside game compilations, or maybe added as a bonus with certain hardware items?
  10. I think the OP asked how to add new tracks, not how to replace existing ones. There's a project somewhere that aims to add the remixes of RA tracks that are only found in Sole Survivor and the console versions of RA, and I guess that Hyper might know something about it.

Heh, thanks But they also have text on them (not entirely unlike a certain leftover sprite of an aerial C&C unit that can be found in RA1 CONQUER.MIX

Hmm, I just noticed that in the patch readme, you give me credit for "some fixed unit graphics", something which I didn't do (unless the animated shadow for the working Const. Yard counts), but you forgot to mention that I made the German icons pack, as well as the icon templates from which you made the French icons.
  13. Ah, Now I get the source of the whole misunderstanding! What I meant by "teleported back to 1946" is that after eliminating Hitler, Einstein returned to his time, i.e.: 1) The intro starts in 1946, with the assistant setting up a camera to record the experiment. 2) Einstein sits on his paradox device's armchair and disappears in a flash. 3) He is teleported ("chronoported"?) to 1924 and shakes hands with Hitler, 4) Immediately after which both disappear in a flash, and then 5) The scene cuts back to the lab in New Mexico in 1946, where 6) Einstein reappears on the chair and tells his assistant that Hitler had been eliminated. Basically, I was referring to (5) and (6) when I said that "Einstein teleported back to 1946 as soon as he touched Hitler, and erased him from existence", meaning that (if it's not clear enough) Einstein went back to 1946 immediately after he "erased" Hitler from existence while in 1924. From which I think it's reasonable to conclude that Einstein did not drop by his younger self while still in 1924 to leave information that would boost technological advancement in the following twenty-something years. Hope everything is clarified now.

I've also noticed another thing: the target flash is never shown on civilian units and structures. Dunno if it's a bug or simply an omission. It's not as noticeable when you attack anything, but when you use C4, it is, because the flash indicates both that the structure is targeted and that the C4 is placed.
  15. After he shakes hands with Hitler, both are covered with the blueish "chrono effect" field, and immediately after Einstein is shown teleporting back to his lab in 1946, telling his assistant that "Hitler is out of play". Nothing to indicate that he made a stop to leave a message to his younger self or anything of that kind. Not that this could not be retconned later though. The young man in the the intro is Einstein's assistant. Einstein's face is not shown in the intro, but he is briefly seen from the back during the Landsberg 1924 sequence, balding and with grey hair. It is clearly the same person who is then shown in the video briefings, so he is not young.

    6-mission DOS C&C demo

All demo missions are just slightly modified full version missions. For GDI, it's missions 1, 10 and 6, and for Nod, missions 1, 5 and 8.

Nyer, I remember that in the old C&P thread (under GameSector) you posted some detailed info on things like how you found the original SAM site firing sound and why it was disabled, and that kind of stuff. The patch readme file just states that certain issues were fixed, without any back-story so to speak. Otherwise, such information is scattered throughout your posts, and I think that it would be nice to have some place where the more detailed information on what was missing in C&C, what the devs intended to do but never completed (until you fixed it - or maybe not yet ), and stuff like that, maybe plus a more deep background on how the game works in general. Oh, and by the way, I think you mentioned somewhere that the "Untamed Land" track would only play in the Funpark missions in DOS C&C, while in the original release of C&C95, it's on the list with all the regular tracks. However, I've recently checked with DOS v1.22p, and "Untamed Land" is present on the soundtrack list. Did they change this in the later versions of C&C?

After some pondering I've come to the conclusion that perhaps I've been too pedantic with the flame-thrower infantry firing animation offset. The animation itself isn't the best of things (and obviously inferior to the C&C flame jet animation), so I think it's not that important after all. The SAM site smoke animation, on the other hand, is obviously displaced (not to mention it being an exact copy of the C&C SAM firing animation, and the SAM site base that is seen through the smoke cloud does not match the one used in RA).
  19. The RA1 intro clearly shows that Einstein teleported back to 1946 as soon as he touched Hitler, and erased him from existence. I guess that the developers operated under the assumption that WWII hampered the development of science and technology, while, ironically, it was just the opposite in real life, in that each of the warring nations invested a lot of effort and resources in R&D of new technologies in the hopes that it would help them get an edge over the opponent.
  20. Hmm, did you or Nyer or maybe someone else do any research of the older DOS versions (I think v1.07 is the first release, right?) looking for possible other developmental leftovers? Maybe traces of support for the separate Nod score screen and map screen themes or something like that?
  21. Hopefully I'm not getting off-topic here, but I've been thinking, what about making a small fix for the DOS version of C&C (I don't know if any exist ATM)? Nothing special or large-scale, just a few fixes of the more obvious (and easily detectable) things like minor glitches in certain missions (e.g. a misplaced tile near the starting position of Nod mission where you have to destroy the Mammoth prototype factory), the missing Construction Yard shadow and stuff like that, plus the aforementioned optional extras. Or is there one already that I've missed?

One more thing that I think was not mentioned before, it ain't a bug in the proper sense of the word, but an easily fixable screw-up. In one of the Allied Counterstrike missions, namely Siberian Conflict: Wasteland, there is no music at the start, because for some unknown reason in this mission's INI file the usually unused Theme= parameter is set to RADIO2, which is a Soviet-only track.

    DOS-only Red Alert? O_O

The only thing about the DOS-only RA release that makes me wonder is that if the hybrid DOS/Win95 release could fit on two CDs, what specifically was there to gain by a pure DOS release? While publishing two separate releases, one fro DOS and the other for DOS/Win95 would be more costly, with separate packages and CDs with different content. IMO, it only makes sense if the separate DOS version were released before the Win95 version was completed.

    6-mission DOS C&C demo

Thanks for the info. I also noticed that when you run the demo without the videos, there will be a black screen in the beginning of each mission, and you have to click the mouse or press Esc to start the mission, whereas both in the downloadable demo and in the full version, the game runs fine without the video, going straight to the game screen. (It's kinda natural for the demo in that the video and soundtracks were an optional download though) [Edit] It occurred to me that the black screen I was referring to is actually a result of greater mission loading times, and is not related to the absence of the video files in the demo.
