  1. After two happy anniversaries in a row, there is a third one that is still bitter. On this day 5 years ago, on 29 October 2013 to be exact, the live service titled simply Command & Conquer and originally announced as just a separate game called C&C Generals 2, was cancelled, and its development studio Victory Games was closed, ending a 10-year span of an RTS studio situated in EA's Los Angeles building. From the get-go, the game suffered from numerous development issues, starting from the Frostbite engine that is notoriously difficult to develop non-shooter games for, through Victory Games' compromises to EA when it came to monetization and sacrificing campaigns at launch just to keep the studio and the game afloat, all the way to poor game design decisions that were only starting to get resolved very late in development, with game-changing patches scheduled, ironically, for the day it was cancelled and several months after that. To add an entire bag of salt to injury, Victory Games was ordered to post up a pre-written cancellation message that was regarded by one of their developers as "total bs", even though they were supposed to roll out a major update that same day. This also stands as the 5 year anniversary since the cancellation of the last known serious attempt at making a Command & Conquer game, and was seen as just the culmination of EA's catastrophic management of the franchise that started since C&C Arena's shift to Tiberian Twilight in 2009. While we were spared an undercooked semiproduct, we had also lost all hope to see a completely new C&C title at all (let alone a good one), at least until the recent remaster announcement.
  2. For Throwback Thursday this week we look back to the time when we first got the teaser image for what was then called :"Command & Conquer Generals 2". Late in 2011, the image you see above started to appear on various sites, rumours circulated that it was indeed our first look at Generals 2. Truth be told I always had my doubts about the legitimacy of this image, was it really Generals 2? Well by early December 2011, Christmas came early for C&C fans as EA confirmed that Generals 2 was indeed in development. By August 2012, Generals 2 had been repackaged as a free to play game simply called "Command & Conquer". Fast forward to October 2013, and well we all know what happened then, the game got cancelled. So for a time there we had a Generals 2 game in the works and sadly all it was in the end was a teaser to game we never got. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. Don't forget to check out the Throwback Thursdays archives if you've missed a week. Check back again next Thursday for another Throwback. Send in your ideas for future instalments. We also encourage you to share this on social media using the hash tags #ThrowbackThursday, #CnCTBT and #CNCNZTBT.
  3. I've just refreshed the wiki article for C&C2013, but it feels off to me. C&C2013 was announced as a live service, while Generals 2 was first announced as its own game, and was later intended to be the first of several "sub-games" of sorts within the said service, despite the fact that the Generals 2 name was not present in the assets of any of the closed alpha builds released to the fans. I think they should have separate articles for this reason. It can be concluded that the C&C2013/C&CF2P term (as it appears on Wikipedia and several of the remaining C&C sites) that is used to categorize the game(s) intended to be incorporated within it may not be right after all. Or is it just me that wants the wiki to be a little more pedantic than needed and should be attending to other articles on it Thoughts?
  4. In a post on their Facebook page, French fansite CNC Saga suggests that the GLA commando, Jarmen Kell, could be back in the next Command & Conquer. This of course is based on some of the new Generals 2 concepts that were posted yesterday. I guess anything is possible, but its really just guess work for now. You be the judge.
  5. CNC Saga have posted seven new Generals 2 concept videos. They were apparently released by a former member of the development team. These videos show some of the work that was done prior to the change to the new Command & Conquer - Free to Play platform. Who knows, maybe some of what's demonstrated here will still be used in the future. Videos removed at the request of EA There are six more videos featuring the European Paragon Tank and GLA Technical. As well as some storyboard videos with temporary voice overs. Watch them all or in this thread on CNC Saga's forums.
  6. Credits for this go to CnCSaga.com and Privatejfx141 who sent me this. This is an extended version of the old Generals 2 trailer we saw back in December 2011.
  7. Yes, you read it right! When no one expected it, BioWare Victory released a new trailer with actual gameplay at Gamescom. It is unclear why did they leave out the Generals 2 logo in the video title and the ending, but you can still feast your eyes on this long awaited material. In other news, the official Facebook page shows a free-to-play tag. I guess that all we can do is wait until this becomes clear. UPDATE: The Generals 2 section on the official website is gone. The game will simply be called Command & Conquer, with all (dis)advantages Free-to-play gameplay gives, according to IGN.
  8. German fan site, CnC-Inside has posted a new article that lists reasons why they firmly believe that Generals 2 will finally make a public appearance at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany later this month. Being a German site, the article is of course not in English, but here are the main points.... Maintain interest in the game - December 2011's announcement brought back the fans, now their interest must be sparked again Go head to head with Blizzard and the next chapter of Starcraft 2 Gamescom is the last big event of the year before the Christmas season begins Have time to communicate before 2013 release date of the game Get the community involved The list above is based on a list provided by a translation from CNC Saga. You can read the original article here in German. For the English speaking world, here's a rough translation.
  9. EA's Summer Showcase event gets under way later this week. It's this Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 1:00 PM PT (8:00 PM UTC), to be exact. The usual big EA franchises will be on show, of course, but the focus for Command & Conquer fans is the slim possibility of some Generals 2 news from this event. You can watch a live stream of all the announcements at this link later on today. These are all US times.
  10. So the big question right now in the C&C Community: will Generals 2 make an appearance at Gamescom this year? We have no 100% confirmation just yet, but with the Generals 2 announcement trailer being posted on the German Gamescom Facebook page, it's our only hint so far. So we can only wait and see.
  11. With E3 all over for another year, all the attention now turns to Gamescom 2012, which takes place in Cologne, Germany this August. Today, EA issued this press release announcing their line up of games to be showcased. Generals 2 is not publicly listed, but let's hope they surprise us with something. Command & Conquer has had a strong presence at Gamescom in the past. Click here for the full press release.
  12. Most people should have figured this out by now. Unfortunately, Command & Conquer Generals 2 will not be shown at E3 this year. Lots of people in the C&C Community were hoping for something about the next Command & Conquer to be released, but our C&C Community Manager, EA_CIRE confirmed it in this post on the Official C&C Forums.... It is somewhat disappointing. It has been six months since the big announcement of Generals 2, and we haven't heard anything since. E3 is a golden opportunity to showcase your product to the rest of the gaming industry. So is it a case of an opportunity lost? Although EA_CIRE does say Generals 2 will not have any public presence, does that mean it was shown privately? Anyway, I'm sure the team at BioWare Victory have their reasons for staying so quiet.
  13. The French C&C fan site, CNC Saga, has posted some images that advertise ASUS' G75VW gaming notebook PC. They think these could possibly be Generals 2 images featured in the ads. Personally, I'm not so sure, because they could be anything. Judge for yourself. ' rel='lightbox'>http://i.imgur.com/9bSXN.png Click here to see a couple more.
  14. The C&C Community Manager, EA_CIRE, has posted this image on Facebook. Seems like he is going to attend E3 2012 this June. The question is: will he unveil Generals 2 there? Here's what he posted along with the picture: ' rel='lightbox'>http://i.imgur.com/iXUqA.jpg We'll keep our fingers crossed.
  15. MCV creates marketing reports on the gaming industry's biggest brands, calling them "Brand Maps". One of those brands is Command & Conquer. Just recently, their full report for Command & Conquer was made available, for a hefty cost of £480.00/$US750/$NZ1000, but a news article breaking down the report was posted. According to MCV's report, Command & Conquer games are played 10.4 hours per week on average, among other interesting statistics. ' rel='lightbox'>http://i.imgur.com/FuG3n.jpg So basically, what we have here is C&C by the numbers, which probably doesn't mean much to the average gamer. If you want the full report, you will have to part with £480.00/$US750/$NZ1000. A massive price to pay for some charts and numbers.
  16. A tweet posted by Johan Andersson, who works at DICE on the Frostbite 2 engine, could possibly indicate that when Generals 2 releases in 2013 a 64bit Windows operating system could be required. Meaning no support for 32bit editions of Windows. This is just speculation, the system requirements for Generals 2 have not been confirmed yet. But if you're stuck on an older 32-bit edition of Windows, now might be a good time to make the upgrade. You can read the original post right here.
  17. It's time for a new poll. This latest one asks you: In what way does EA's Origin influence your purchase of Generals 2? It's safe to assume that Origin will be a requirement when you install Generals 2, so we want to know if this will influence your decision to buy Generals 2 in a positive or negative way, or perhaps it's not the deciding factor for you. If you are reading this update on the main page, just look to your right and vote in the poll box. If you're reading this via the forums, click here to cast your vote. And, as always, don't forget to share any feedback or comments about this poll as well. Here are the results of our previous poll, Are you playing Tiberium Alliances? With 53% of all votes, it appears the the majority of you are not playing Tiberium Alliances. This result doesn't surprise me, because Tiberium Alliances is the type of game that really only appeals to certain kind of gamer. The full results of this poll can be found right here.
  18. On the official Facebook page for Command & Conquer a new quick poll is asking "What are you looking for the most in Generals 2?" You have the following options should you decide to vote. Singleplayer Experience Frostbite 2 in action Multiplayer game modes Overall multiplayer experience A new high quality C&C game Click here to cast your vote.
  19. Here's a clever fan made story trailer for Generals 2 created by BenGe89. It has been made using the Generals 2 media that has already been released, plus some scenes from Tiberium Wars and some extra footage made in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Watch it below. Thanks to United-Forum.de for the news tip.
  20. If you're attending the up coming PAX East show you might have a chance to score one these cool looking http://i.imgur.com/ZbEHF.jpg. This was posted on Official C&C Facebook page today. ' rel='lightbox'>http://i.imgur.com/ZbEHF.jpg Hopefully fans in other parts of the world will be able to get their hands on these in the future.
  21. Remember the original teaser screen shot that started all of the Generals 2 hype? Well now, a new video has been discovered which appears to be the source of that screen shot. This was found on Russian fan site RTSWorld.ru. It may be short, but it's something new, I guess.
  22. Here's a cool fan made video. Using the power of the Frostbite 2.0 engine that powers Battlefield 3, and Red Alert 2 for inspiration, some dedicated fans came up with this. It's almost like looking into the future of what's to come with Generals 2 next year. We always enjoy seeing creative stuff like this. So if you spot anymore, let us know.
  23. There is a new feature article posted at IGN called The Warlike History of Command & Conquer. It basically takes a look back at the long running franchise from Kane's early days with Command & Conquer and Westwood Studios all the way to Generals 2 from new developer, BioWare Victory in 2013. Here's part of it. Some good reading in this article, click here for more.
  24. Two job listings have appeared on the EA Jobs site for BioWare Victory. They are a Cinematic Environment Modeler and a Cinematic Modeler. This would suggest that Generals 2 could be using computer generated (CG) cinematic sequences rather than the traditional C&C trademark of using full live action cut-scenes. This seems like logical move on BioWare Victory's part consided how powerful the the impressive Frostbite 2.0 engine is.
  25. On the Official C&C Forums, a simple question was raised: Will Generals 2 be making an appearance at the upcoming PAX East next month? Well, the short answer is no, it won't be, as mentioned by community manager, EA_CIRE, in this post.... This caused a little bit of unhappiness from the fans on the Official C&C Forums. They basically went on to ask why even announce the game so early and give the community nothing since the announcement? EA_CIRE further explained.... Click here for the original thread.
