  1. In this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, we remember another Command & Conquer game that didn't reach us... in its intended form, at least. Command & Conquer: Arena was to be a multiplayer-oriented spin-off set in the Tiberium universe after the events of Kane's Wrath, where GDI, Nod and Scrin units would battle in arenas for the spectators' pleasure. The game would feature so-called C&C Points for purchasing units, upgrades and skins. The beta key found in the Red Alert 3 Premier Edition led to a site designed similarly to one of the logo variations of C&C Arena, even though it was supposedly meant for the Asian market. The game was in-development around late 2008 (proven by this Zone Raider concept), until, according to interviews with the developers like Greg Black, EALA was forced to create a full game out of it in mere months by higher-ups at EA, leading to the Tiberian Twilight title we all know. Little further information exists on the game, apart from some concept art and leaked in June 2010. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 2. In this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, we remember another iconic unit from the C&C games - the Overlord Tank and its variations from C&C Generals and Zero Hour. What is a C&C game without one version or another of the Mammoth? Apart from its two destructive barrels, the Overlord Tank could be outfitted with one of three extensions on its top: a battle bunker, a gattling cannon or a propaganda tower, as well as uranium shells and the Nuclear Tanks upgrade. General Ta Hun Kwai's Emperor Overlord variant, however, came with a pre-built propaganda tower, but could also be upgraded with a gattling cannon, though for some reason the Subliminal Messaging upgrade did not affect its propaganda tower in official versions of Zero Hour. Still, the Overlord is very much worthy of the Mammoth Tank line. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 3. In this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, we remember the appearance of the Eiffel Tower in Red Alert 2. In the alpha screenshot from April 2000, we can see it as we know it well, but with a hint at its usage in the campaign as a giant Tesla coil. However, the final version has three legs instead of four, the model was remade completely and the ingame string reads "Paris Tower" instead of Eiffel Tower. The Tesla coil usage was retained, though, and was used in Operation: City of Lights in the final version. It isn't certain why the Tower was changed, some speculate it was due to censorship. 4. In this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, we take a look at a unit design which took three concept stages to reach a final game, and was even featured in a mod in the meanwhile. The Centurion Siege Walker was first imagined during the development of Red Alert 2 as a Soviet unit, but apart from two concepts in two camo versions, it never appeared in the game and was apparently not considered for Yuri's Revenge. In the Premier Edition DVD of Red Alert 3, a slightly redesigned version can be seen, but it was again omitted from the game itself, and in 2009, it finally managed to "crawl" to the fans as the Reaper unit in Red Alert 3: Uprising. It has also been prominently featured in the Mental Omega mod for many years, even in the 2.0 days! Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 5. This week's edition of Throwback Thursday does not feature an iconic unit from the games. Instead, we look back at a unit that has been mostly forgotten in regular play. The Ravager was introduced in Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath from 2008 as an elite tier 2 assault unit for all three Scrin factions. Its special ability was Tiberium agitation, which was particularly powerful against full Harvesters, Refineries, Silos and even other Scrin Tiberium-charged units. Despite this, the Ravagers' high cost prevented them from staying long in competitive play. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 6. This week's edition of Throwback Thursday features a look back at three different Command & Conquer games and the appearance of the other Kucan, not Joe, it is in fact his younger brother Daniel Kucan. Joe Kucan's brother has played three different characters over the years. First, you see him as Jake McNeil from Tiberian Sun in 1999. Next up, he was Joshua “Mitch” Mitchell, the founder of Steel Talons, in Kane’s Wrath from 2008. And then lastly he briefly appears in the GDI ending of Tiberian Twilight from 2010, as a passer by who is asked by a reporter for his opinion on Kane’s ascension, to which he says: "Kane’s gone? Yeah, right!" and walks away. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. Don't forget to check out the Throwback Thursdays archives if you've missed a week. 7. For Throwback Thursday this week we continue with the "Ladies of C&C" series. There are still a few to get through as well. Today we feature Kelly Hu as Suki Toyama in Red Alert 3 from 2008. Suki Toyama, the Imperial Logistical Officer, was the one relaying the Emperor's orders to you as the Empire of the Rising Sun commander through out the campaign. She was 100% loyal to the Empire, as the Toyama family has served the Emperor for ten generations. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 8. This week's Throwback Thursday features the Harvester from Command & Conquer: Tiberium Wars in 2007. But its not really just the Harvester from that game. Its from all of them. Something we call the "Humble Harvester". It could be the Harvester from the original Command & Conquer, the Chrono Miners, the Ore Collectors, Harvesters with Machine Guns attached to them, Harvesters that teleport back to the Refinery. The Harvesters may have evolved over time, progressing from that simple four wheeled truck like vehicle with poor A.I, to far more sophisticated units later on, the premise is the same. Collect the resources and return to base. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 9. For Throwback Thursday this week we are looking back at another hard to explain part of Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight from 2010. During the development of this not so warmly received game it was stated that Tiberium, a central part of the story from the previous games, was no longer the focus and they were moving away from the traditional resource harvesting methods. The community complained, and to their credit, EA did listen. But what they came up with was the "T.E.U. Lifter". In order to get Tiberium back on the battlefields, EA's answer was to have these contraptions drop green and blue Tiberium crystals from orbit onto specially placed Idris Corpiration drop pads. For any GDI or Nod unit to collect and use to bolster their resources. This was a lame game mechanic, a quick fix solution that made no sense story wise. 10. After a brief hiatus, Throwback Thursday returns this week with a look back to a cool scene from the cut-scenes in Kane's Wrath from 2008. Towards the end of Act I, Kane's has to shut you down, as you are playing the part of LEGION. But before he does that, Kane's leaves you with a fine Shakespearean quote.... "To sleep, perchance to dream". The sequence is short but with the clever use of an odd camera angle, Kane looks kind of creepy. 11. A bit later than usual, its time for Throwback Thursday once again. This week looks back at General Carville and his not so warm welcome to Canada in Red Alert 2 from 2000. Many of your orders were given by General Carville through out the Allied campaign. As the story progressed, things were not going well for the Allies and General Carville ends up relocated to Canada. He didn't seem to pleased. Perhaps it was his Texan stubbornness shining through. Do Texans not like Canada? Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. Don't forget to check out the Throwback Thursdays archives if you've missed a week. 12. For Throwback Thursday this week we continue to look back at the iconic units, and what is more iconic than Nod's Flame Tank from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars in 2007. Brute force, combined with deadly flame turrets. Infantry never stand a chance against the intense heat. Especially effective for clearing out garrisoned buildings. The Flame Tank has been a main stay of the Brotherhood's arsenal for years. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 13. This weeks Throwback Thursday comes from C&C Renegade in 2002, but its really something that Westwood released for another game. The Renegade skins for The Sims. There were two sets, one for GDI and one for Nod. Each set included all of the main characters. So you could basically have Havoc walking around in your Sims game. When we used to have a large archive of downloads here at CNCNZ.com, these Renegade skins for The Sim were available. We don't have them any more, but you can still get them from this link. Thanks to Plokite_Wolf sending in the idea for this week's Throwback Thursday feature. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 14. Throwback Thursday this week looks back to the cheesiest of cheesy lines delivered by President Michael Dugan in Red Alert 2 from 2000. Once President Dugan telephones Premier Romanov and demands that he calls off all Soviet attacks and states that he put Romanov into power, Premier Romanov interrupts and says "We Romanov’s have our legacy to consider", President Dugan responds with a line that could only fit in the crazy world of Red Alert 2, "I don't give a wooden nickel about your legacy!". So cheesy, so corny, so cringe worthy but so damn memorable. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 15. For Throwback Thursday this week we look back to the time when we first got the teaser image for what was then called :"Command & Conquer Generals 2". Late in 2011, the image you see above started to appear on various sites, rumours circulated that it was indeed our first look at Generals 2. Truth be told I always had my doubts about the legitimacy of this image, was it really Generals 2? Well by early December 2011, Christmas came early for C&C fans as EA confirmed that Generals 2 was indeed in development. By August 2012, Generals 2 had been repackaged as a free to play game simply called "Command & Conquer". Fast forward to October 2013, and well we all know what happened then, the game got cancelled. So for a time there we had a Generals 2 game in the works and sadly all it was in the end was a teaser to game we never got. 16. This weeks edition of Throwback Thursday looks back at how C&C Generals got censored in Germany back in 2003. Censorship is strict in Germany. And the time of the release of the game, German officials decide too many of the game's core elements resembled real world events. Obviously the most notable change was the fact that all the Generals and human character were turned into Cyborgs. But here a list of all the major changes to a game that many people in the rest of world never got to see or play.... The intro was completely removed due to having a few not-so-subtle references to real-life politics/politicians. The three playable sides had their names changed to no longer reference real-life countries. The campaign was renamed to "mission". The world map on the loading screen was removed and any references to real places or countries are altered. Interestingly, the spoken briefings were not altered. As expected, the human soldiers are altered to be cyborgs. This includes changing the portraits of all units and having robotic voices. The terrorist was removed from the game and instead replaced with a driving bomb. Other than the visuals, however, the functionality is exactly the same. Human civilians are removed from missions. The second GLA mission was removed completely. It involves hijacking a UN convoy and stealing their supplies, as well as killing any civilians (or destroying their houses) who try to take the UN supplies for their own benefit. Completing the last mission for any of the campaigns does not play a video. The expansion pack's intro is present, but the portraits of the generals which appear at various points in the intro were covered up by lazily edited in copies of the portraits from Generals Challenge. The portraits of the generals were censored as usual, other than that though they kept their human names, with one exception: Dr. Thrax was renamed to Dr. Trax to remove the pun on anthrax. Strangely, the Skirmish Mode portraits were replaced with the win/lose portraits from Generals Challenge. The credits of Zero Hour showed a US Ranger in the background, this was removed, leaving German players with nothing but blackness. 17. Throwback Thursday this week remembers the arrival of the Empire of the Rising Sun's Shogun Executioner in Red Alert 3 from 2008. The Shogun Executioner was the Empire of the Rising Sun's ultimate weapon. An enormous assault walker, heavily armoured and armed with three deadly "Wave-Force Blades" for its primary attack. In addition the Shogun Executioner could simultaneously drive the blades into the ground to release an electric "Omega Shockwave", usually sufficient to destroy structures in the surrounding area. The Shogun Executioner had no anti-air weaponry but it was a hazard to low-flying aircraft due to its height. The Shogun Executioner was also able traverse through water and tread over or on buildings Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 18. For Throwback Thursday this week we go back the original Command & Conquer from 1995, and a look at the coolest ever installation for a PC game. They just don't make them like this any more. It was even fun to set up the sound card. Who remembers always having to type in the PORT, IRQ and DMA settings for sound cards? As the installation progresses, all sorts of text and images fill the screen. Unique overlapping voices get faster and faster until the screen goes blank, pause for dramatic effect.... "installation complete". The game is ready to be played. . Perhaps there are some younger C&C fans out there who have never seen it before. 19. For Throwback Thursday this week we look back the debut of the Ion Cannon in the original Command & Conquer from 1995. Introduced during the First Tiberium War, the Ion Cannon circled the Earth on a geosynchronous orbit. It became the signature weapon of the Global Defense Initiative. Like it's more recent versions, the first generation Ion Cannon was capable of obliterating any location on the world with a precise, calculated strike of unforgiving destructive power. The Ion Cannon was pivotal in the destruction of Kane's Temple of Nod in Cairo. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 20. Throwback Thursday this week is going back to look at something that was very unique to Yuri's army in Yuri's Revenge, the expansion for Red Alert 2 that released in 2001. And its the Floating Disc. Yuri had a flair for the dramatic, and also a clear appreciation for nostalgia and old movies. When Yuri decided to develop an economy attacking unit, he decided to base it's design off of the flying saucers from old Sci-Fi movies. The end result was the Floating Disc. Equipped with hover technology that allows it to move about the battlefield. The Floating Disc has a laser actuator located that fired from around the outer edge of the disc. It could also drain power or credits from enemy bases using the Drain Beam located in the centre sphere. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 21. Something that hasn't featured enough in our Throwback Thursday feature is content from C&C Generals. Well that changes today as we look back at the C&C Generals Combat Card game. A simple and free little game released by EA back in 2003. The idea of the game was to capture the opponent's units. This was accomplished by first choosing your faction, you would then pick one of the Firepower, Speed, Cost or Build time attributes on the card you were dealt. If you selected the Speed attribute and the opponent's Speed attribute was lower you would win that round. Capture all 12 to beat the opponent. Want to play this games yourself? Download it here. 22. Throwback Thursday this week returns to the "Iconic Units" series focusing on the Obelisk of Light from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars in 2007. Although it's not exactly a unit in the game. The Obelisk has been a main stay of Nod's defensive arsenal since first Tiberium War. It's appearance has changed slightly over the years but it's fire-power has not. All approaching ground based enemies fear that charging up sound as it prepares to fire. In Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars the Obelisk gained the ability to detect stealth units and link up with Beam Cannons for an overcharged firing mode. 23. For Throwback Thursday this week look back the the all important Chronosphere from Red Alert in 1996. It seems appropriate to feature it in our Throwback Thursday feature since it was used by Einstein to go back in time and change the course of history when he removed Hitler. The other ability for the Chronosphere was to transport units from location to another, this of course created many advanced strategies. However the Chronosphere was not a perfect technology, there was a danger to using what was considered an experimental device. Each time the Chronosphere was activated and used, there was chance of a Chrono Vortex being created. The Chrono Vortex was essentially a rift in the space-time continuum that rampages through the battlefield, destroying everything in its path. It appeared as a giant whirlpool of bending time, defying the laws of physics. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 24. Its another edition of Throwback Thursday. This week, we pay tribute to arguably the best and most useful unit in C&C games, The Engineer. And the focus is the Soviet Combat Engineer from Red Alert 3 in 2008. Of course the Engineer is present in every C&C game in one forum or another, but the Soviet Combat Engineer from Red Alert 3 is probably the best example from them all. Armed with the usual abilities expected from any Engineer, along with the extra abilities of digging bunkers to garrison infantry, a nifty inflatable dingy to traverse over water and even a pistol for some defence. In the hands of a skilled player an Engineer, or even many of them, can deal some extreme damage. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 25. This week's edition of Throwback Thursday continues with the the "Ladies of C&C" series. And its Jodi Lyn O’Keefe as Kelly Weaver from Red Alert 3: Uprising in 2009. Kelly Weaver was the tough as nails, take no crap spokesperson for the FutureTech Corporation, who frequently addressed the public regarding their concerns over FutureTech's research and development of military hardware for the Allies.
