  1. Throwback Thursday this week remembers McBurger Kong in Red Alert 2 from 2000. McBurger Kong is of course a parody of the real life fast food franchises McDonald's and Burger King. The "Kong" in its name is a reference to King Kong. Allied and Soviet infantry were known to often stop off at a McBurger Kong. And by that, it means infantry could be garrisoned inside these restaurants. Some interesting facts, if the McBurger Kong is damaged enough, the gorilla on the roof will suddenly change his pose. Destroying the McBurger Kong will cause it to explode similarly to the V3 Rocket Launcher's supply block of rockets. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 2. Throwback Thursday this week looks back to the time when Yuri decided he needed to go to the Moon in Yuri's Revenge from 2001. Yuri had already constructed his lunar base located in the Sea of Tranquillity on the Moon. his plan was to relocate here after he initiated his global network of Psychic Dominators. As luck would have it, you as the Soviet Commander, just happen to have full training as a Cosmonaut, and Premier Romanov orders you to follow Yuri to the Moon and lead a Soviet lunar task force to destroy Yuri's secret base there. 3. Another iconic unit is featured in this week's edition of Throwback Thursday. Its the GDI Juggernaut from Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars in 2007. The Juggernaut first appeared in Tiberian Sun, but it was an improved version seen in Tiberium Wars. When the GDI needed long range bombardment, the Juggernaut was called upon to provide it. Armed with three powerful cannons, Juggernauts pick off their unsuspecting targets from long distance. But it's not the abilities of this unit that make it so memorable. It's the cool unit response that it had, such as "I'm the Juggernaut!". And some of the most unique idle animations ever created. When left idle, the Juggernaut would sometimes peck the ground like a chicken or scratch the cockpit with one of its legs similar to a cat scratching its chin. 4. Can you believe it has been one whole year of our Throwback Thursday feature already? That's right every Thursday for the past year (except for one back in June 2015) we have been rolling back the clock and enjoying some of the coolest and most interest things spanning the entire C&C universe. To kick off the second year, lets look back at some hot chicks in the "Ladies of C&C" series. This week its Ivana Milicevic as Dasha Fedorovich in Red Alert 3 from 2008. Red Alert 3 was literately bursting at the seams with beautiful women, but I always thought Ivana Milicevic topped them all. And her character was actually important to the storyline, as she interacted with you, the Soviet Commander, setting up your missions. 5. Throwback Thursday this weeks goes back to the development days of Red Alert 3, in June 2008 to be exact. This is when EA pulled off a "switch-a-roo" with the Soviet Apocalypse Tank. When Red Alert 3 was first revealed, the original design of the Apocalypse Tank was not warmly received. It simply didn't look right at all with it's tiny gun barrels and lack of size. EA heard this and gave us the much more intimidating Apocalypse Tank that we now see in the game today. The new design featured huge gun barrels and much beefier body. Even the treads were emphasised. Red Alert 3 was fully of wacky unit designs for all the factions, but this is one I feel they nailed perfectly. 6. This week's edition of Throwback Thursday looks back to the first time we got to see Westwood's vision of what was then called Command & Conquer 3, this was way back in 2004. At the time EA were developing their Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth games. During the Battle for Middle Earth community summit at EALA in August 2004, an amazing image showing an alien invasion got leaked. It first appeared as a photo taken by someone when they spotted it on a monitor at EALA, it then went on to cause a major buzz through out the entire C&C community. A few years later we got the high quality version on the image, and many more. It was later confirmed they were indeed from Command & Conquer 3, Westwood's original concept for what was apparently meant to be called "Tiberian Incursion". Of course this version of C&C 3 never got past the early concept and design stages, and by 2006, EALA had a different plan in mind for their Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. 7. This week's Throwback Thursday features another iconic unit, the Tesla Trooper from Red Alert 2 in 2000. And advanced Soviet unit armed with a Portable Tesla coil mounted on one arm. The Tesla Trooper strikes fear in the enemy infantry because they can't survive the highly charge electric blasts fired at them. Tesla Troopers are best used as a static defence or an escort for armoured vehicles, as they are most effective against infantry, yet they are also particularly devastating against enemy tanks, which cannot crush them. And don't forget, they can also charge up Tesla Coils to increase their power and range. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 8. Throwback Thursday returns this week with a new logo and one of the big surprises in Red Alert 3 from 2008. Complete the Allied campaign in Red Alert 3 and you're treated to a cameo appearance by the one and only David Hasselhoff. From a guy who drove around in a cool black talking car, to a California lifeguard surrounded by beautiful women, he ends up being the Vice President in a video game. While it was a surprise to see "The Hoff" appear in the game, it really shouldn't have been. Anyone remember the insanely funny video series he did to promote Red Alert 3? Hmm... that's good RTS! 9. The focus for Throwback Thursday this week looks back at the GLA's Super weapon from Command & Conquer Generals in 2002. The Scud Storm fires 9 missiles onto the targeted area, which randomly strike anything in a wide radius. These missiles not only explode with devastating force, but also leave behind deadly clouds of toxin that will damage any vehicles and kill any infantry that try to enter the target area after the attack. A truly devastating weapon for a devious GLA commander. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 10. Throwback Thursday this week goes back to Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight from 2010, and more specifically the not so epic conclusion to the Tiberium saga. It's clear that not much time was invested in crafting the storyline for Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight but surely they could have come up with something better than Kane stepping into a swirling purple Scrin portal and vanishing. This cheap and lame ending also left us with even more questions, who was Kane? Was he human? and sadly we will never get answers to these questions. This is just one of the disappointing parts of Tiberian Twilight. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 11. This week's Throwback Thursday goes back to the original Command & Conquer from 1995 with a look back at another iconic unit, the Brotherhood of Nod Flame Tank, also known as the "Devil's Tongue". Armed with twin fixed flame cannons joined to two large pressurized napalm tanks mounted on the back. The driver's canopy is located between the giant flame-throwers. Designed to intimidate and strike fear in their enemies, Nod used the Flame Tanks for eliminating infantry. Many have fallen to the hot flame of Devil's Tongue. The Flame Tank was one the of the mainstays in Nod's arsenal and it's definitely an iconic C&C unit. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 12. For Throwback Thursday this week we go back to Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath from 2008. Featuring the return of the Titan and the Wolverine. Since EA had a lot of plot holes and contradictions to patch up after Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, it actually worked rather well because we got to see two of the popular GDI units from the Tiberian Sun era make their return. Both units were part of the GDI Steel Talons sub faction. The Steel Talons specialised in using untested technologies on the battlefield, it seemed odd to be using older tech like the Titan and Wolverine. But these were not same Titans and Wolverines, these are their Mk II variants, packing a bit more punch than their original counterparts. 13. This week’s instalment of Throwback Thursday goes back to Command & Conquer Generals in 2003 to look at another iconic Command & Conquer unit. Every Command & Conquer game has had a big tank for one of the factions. In the Tiberium universe we got the GDI Mammoth Tank, in the Red Alert universe (from Red Alert 2 onwards) we got the Soviet Apocalypse Tank. In Command & Conquer Generals, the tradition continued with the Chinese Overlord Tank. And of all the big tanks, the Overlord was probably the most versatile in terms how it be upgraded. Add the Battle Bunker to give the ability to garrison infantry inside it. Add some extra fire power with Gatling Cannon upgrade, or keep your forces healed at all times with the addition of a Propaganda Tower. The strategy with this upgrade system was to decide what upgrade you needed, as only one of them could be applied to any Overlord Tank at a time. 14. We are going back to multiple years for this week's Throwback Thursday. Many of the Command & Conquer games began life with a different logo to what see on the box covers for them today. During the alpha/beta stages of development of the original Command & Conquer in 1994, the game featured a slightly different logo. We don't know what made Westwood change it though. Fast forward to 1999/2000, Red Alert 2 was announced featuring an odd looking logo, it was soon changed one that matched the first Red Alert logo. In 2001, Yuri's Revenge was announced with a simplistic looking design, this was also changed later to fit with the Red Alert 2 style. In 2006 when Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Was was revealed, EA used a very different looking C&C logo, with a modernised twist and a big green stylised number 3 behind it. The logo was redesigned some months later and looked much better. In 2008, Red Alert 3 was announced sporting a very eye catching logo, complete with backwards lettering to go with the game's Russian artwork theme. The logo was changed to a more simple looking one though. But I think it would have been cool to keep the first one. Of all these unused logos for C&C games, which one looks the best to you? 15. Here we go with the first Throwback Thursday for 2016. And for this one we roll back the clock to the early days of C&C Generals. These were the first ever screenshots shared around the community when the game was first revealed to the public in early 2002, it could have possibly been earlier than that. Either way, everyone was blown away by how amazing the game looked. This was the first time we were seeing a C&C game in a real 3D engine. These screenshots included units that would eventually be cut from the game. But what catches your eye the most, the super awesome water effects that also got changed. Some would say it got down graded. You can view larger version of these early C&C General screenshots right here. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 16. Its the final Throwback Thursday for 2015. And to end it for the year we are looking back another C&C game we never got. The cancelled C&C Renegade 2. Westwood never really got out the design and concept stage with this one, but the early work they did was interesting. It would have been based in the Red Alert 2 time line and bridge the gap between the fall of the Soviets and the rise of Nod. The plan was to use an upgraded version of the W3D engine from C&C Renegade. Unfortunately we have to file this game with the long list of other cancelled and failed Command & Conquer games that have accumulated over the years. 17. It's a Christmas edition of Throwback Thursday this week. But it doesn't really have anything to do with the festive season though. What we are looking back at is the arrival the Scrin in the Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars from 2007. Many fans agree that the much hyped debut of the Scrin was somewhat underwhelming. But their early invasion force did feature some unique and powerful units such as the Annihilator Tripod, Planetary Assault Carrier and the Devourer Tank, just to name a few. The Scrin campaign, while short, ends with a tease that more is to come, the game hints towards a full Scrin invasion arriving on Earth. Unfortunately we never got to see any of that. Thanks to all the screw ups within EA, the Scrin never got used when the Tiberium saga ended with Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. 18. Throwback Thursday for this week pays tribute to arguably the most iconic unit of them all, the mighty Mammoth Mk. II from Tiberian Sun in 1999. GDI's unmatched quadrupedal walker was designed to change of the course of any battle. It was a brutal combination of raw power, heavy armour and awesome fire-power thanks to it's Rail Guns. Its very clear that Westwood Studios were inspired by the the AT-AT's from the Star Wars franchise for the design of the Mammoth Mk. II. And of course we have always liked the Mammoth Mk. II here at CNCNZ.com, as it has featured in the layout of our site for many years now. Remember, you can click on the preview to see a larger and more detailed image. 19. Its time for Throwback Thursday once again. When you need something big, scary and loaded with plenty of fire power all need the Soviet's Kirov Airship, that first appeared in Red Alert 2 from 2000. Another iconic Command & Conquer unit. These slow moving flying fortresses really take a pounding to bring down and they pack a serious punch, carpet bombing their helpless enemies from the skies. It truly is death from above. 20. This a repost of the news item that was originally posted on Thursday 3rd December. For this week's Throwback Thursday we are going back and looking at some of the most iconic units from Command & Conquer games . Starting with the GDI Titan in Tiberian Sun from 1999. After the first Tiberium War, GDI decided to abandon the use of tanks in the traditional sense, instead opting for large bipedal walkers. Hence the debut of the Titan Mk. I. Standing at around 25 feet tall and armed with a powerful 120mm cannon, the Titan is force to reckoned with. The other advantage to large bipedal walking units, the can stomp on anything below their large feet. Many Nod soldiers have fallen victim to getting crushed by a group of Titans. 21. This weeks edition of Throwback Thursday goes back to C&C Renegade in 2002. Early in the game, Havoc disobeys orders and decides to "liberate" a Hovercraft, basically stealing it. This cut-scene provides one of the cooler and more memorable parts of the single player campaign, as we get to see a screenshot from the the first Commando mission in the original Command & Conquer. This screenshot then morphs into the 3D world that is C&C Renegade. Remember, you can click on the preview above to see a larger and more detailed image. 22. This weeks instalment of Throwback Thursday goes back to September 2008 and looks back at the cancellation of Tiberium, the C&C FPS game we never got. It never had Command & Conquer in the title, but it was GDI versus the Scrin. There was never any mention of Nod being involved, but we always expected them to make an appearance. What we did get to see of this game looked great though. I remember during my trip to EALA for the Red Alert 3 Community Summit in June 2008, we got to witness the Tiberium development team go behind closed doors for a meeting with some EA executives. An hour or so later they emerged from this meeting looking a bit deflated. Perhaps the fate of the game was sealed on that day in June. On the 30th of September 2008, we got the news that Tiberium was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the development team and was abruptly cancelled. 23. For Throwback Thursday this week we are going back to Yuri's Revenge from 2001 and featuring the Slave Miner, a unique unit for Yuri’s Psychic Army. Yuri took a different approach to collecting ore, rather than the traditional Ore Refinery and Harvester/Collector used by the Allies and Soviets, Yuri sped up the process by deploying a Slave Miner next to ore fields, Slaves would then shovel ore into the Slave Miner and it would refined into credits without the need to return to a refinery. The Slave Miner is also considered unique in that it is a vehicle and a structure (but not both at the same time), meaning that it can be built from both the Construction Yard (where it is deployed as a building) and the War Factory. While Yuri's ore collection process was better it had disadvantages. The Slaves were slow and if their Slave Miner was destroyed, the Slaves would essentially be freed and then fight against Yuri's by joining forces with their liberators. 24. For Throwback Thursday this week we look back at the handshake that created the Red Alert universe from Command & Conquer Red Alert in 1996, what other game would it have been. Einstein creates his time machine and goes back in time, making sure Hitler doesn't rise to power. Essentially making him a "friend" rather than a "foe". This causes the Soviets to become the dominate super power. The rest of course, is as they say.... history. Remember, you can click on the preview above to see a larger and more detailed image. 25. Throwback Thursday for this week ties in with our site celebrating 18 years online. The origins of our site date back to 1997, but our CNCNZ.com identity came a few years later. So today we are looking back at the first version of what was then called "CNCNZ" or "Command & Conquer NZ" in 1999. This was life before the dot com got added, in early 2000 we officially became "CNCNZ.com", and its been that way ever since. And you can see this is also where the traditional blue colour theme came from. If you would like to see past designs of the site you can see them all in this gallery on our Facebook page.
