FileFront Closing

Recommended Posts

Kind of gaming related I guess. From March 30th FileFront are closing down....

Dear FileFront User:

We regret to inform you that due to the current economic conditions we are forced to indefinitely suspend the FileFront site operations on March 30, 2009. If you have uploaded files, images or posted blogs, or if you would like to download some of your favorite files, please take this opportunity to download them before March 30th when the site will be suspended.

We would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have been part of the FileFront communities we have built together. Your support has had a meaningful impact for all of us here at FileFront. Again, we want to give you a sincere “thank you” for your support over the years and wish you all the very best.

Keep gaming alive,

FileFront Management and Team.

I can't believe this, honestly. I visit the site regularly just for the interesting and sometimes lame POTDs.

Now where is the biggest C&C fan JohnWE going?

I don't think it's the economy. I have my own theories but I'll keep those to myself.

I think we're thinking the same thing.

Honestly, what else could it be? I just browse Filefront so I didn't know if there politics to it :P

Big sites like that don't just arbitrarily close this quickly. There's more to it than just the economy.

Well I just read this on NeoGaf:

According to the forum manager of http://forums.filefront.com (which is now down), File Front employees have been let go and the site will be shutting down ASAP. The forums were the first to go, without notice to any of it's staff/volunteers. I've been a member there (and former administrator) for eight years now and I guess this is how it all ends.

I have no reliable sources to link to and the main website is still up, but the forums are down and the official word from the community manager is "that all File Front employees have been let go and the site will be shutting down".

File Front was the only site not affected in the UGO acquirement of the 1up network, so I figured I'd just give the heads up. I guess it was only a matter of time.

I originally thought it was an early April fools joke. Perhaps the servers are undergoing maintenance and the forum manager is just playing a cruel joke, but then I realized the numbers involved with this and I doubt that's the case. It would upset too many people, especially considering the forums hosted many mod communities, like the Forgotten Hope community.

Hope it's not April Fools joke :(

Could be April Fools Joke though.

No one pulls April Fools jokes like that this early. Anyone that would believe something like that is the fool.

Its not a joke. Its dead.

But the good news JohnWE and CNC Files will return. Plans are in the works to get the data and files. Without saying to much, even APOC is helping in this. That's all I'll say for now.

Since JohnWE is homeless for the time being, can we keep him?

I stole this from their forums:

This is NOT an April Fools joke

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I assure you all that the forums being online at this time is not a joke or something that is temporary. What information I have is that there will be more information to be expected sometime tomorrow. I myself am not entirely sure what is going on and why the forums are back online. I'll know when you know really. I was just instructed to let you know that this is for real and not a joke by any stretch of the imagination. I know many will not believe me because of the terrible timing, but the persons that I had talked to about this would never joke with me about this sort of thing.

More to come as I find it out.

Jeff

Who _really_ cares? It's not dead. Be happy for that at least.

Probably some wheeling and dealing behind the scenes or someone bought FileFront.

Whether it closes or not, all I really cared about was CnCFiles anyway, which is still going to be open.

Although, I will miss Empire at War Files... :(

Here we are:

FileFront has been acquired by the original founders of the site and will NOT be suspended as previously announced. This is NOT an April Fool's Joke.

After learning about Ziff Davis Media's plan to shut down FileFront at the end of March, the original founders of FileFront made the decision to buy it back from Ziff Davis Media.

We're happy to announce to the gaming community that as of today, April 1st, 2009, FileFront is a completely independent company again and is no longer part of Ziff Davis Media. All previously suspended services should be active and working again. We thank Ziff Davis Media for their cooperation and willingness to keep the site and community alive.

Due to the very unfortunate timing of this event and related announcements on March 24th and April 1st (April Fool's Day), we'd like to make it perfectly clear that:

1) The March 24th announcement about FileFront shutting down was NOT an early April Fool's joke and Ziff Davis Media had every intention of shutting down FileFront by the end of March.

2) This announcement about the original founders buying back FileFront from Ziff Davis Media is also NOT an April Fool's joke.

3) We're making this announcement on April 1st because the deal was completed today and we want to bring all services back online immediately.

4) We would NEVER shut down FileFront as an April Fool's joke.

5) We are happy to be back!

FileFront has existed in one form or another (originally as FileLeech and Voodoo Extreme's downloads) since 1997. In the last 12 years, FileFront has become the gaming community's most comprehensive and trafficked library hosting millions of files for thousands of games while requiring no registration and providing uncapped download speeds. We look forward to improving FileFront and serving the gaming community for years to come.

Welcome home. Game On!

Good, good...

I wasn't sure who would buy it, but it seemed like someone had to. A website that big doesn't just go down like that. O_o

Though, I was sort of looking forward to Subsystem11...Oh well, at least I still get to go to EaWFiles. :D
