Doctor Destiny 41 Posted April 20, 2010 Seriously though, its because I've been saying I was a modder since I joined these forums, with these images, I am proving it. I also like to see what people think of my work. But it's useless if other people don't ever get to use it. Even if you keep the graphics to yourself, at least a release lets other people enjoy it at the same. I don't see the point of a private mod with original content. It's a gigantic waste of talent. Nmenth 290 Posted April 20, 2010 But it's useless if other people don't ever get to use it. Even if you keep the graphics to yourself, at least a release lets other people enjoy it at the same. I don't see the point of a private mod with original content. It's a gigantic waste of talent. Yeah well... to me, modding is entertainment, I do it for my own enjoyment. Like other people might choose to watch TV with their free time. Although it takes a lot more effort to mod than watch TV, I do not feel that it is any different from the perspective of the purpose behind it... watching TV can be just as much, if not more, of a waste of talent (assuming the TV watcher ever had any talent). I also write novels for the same reason, I find it enjoyable, but have no intention of publishing any of them. My games (not mods) are my work, my true talent, but I make them with the hopes that some day they will be published and selling on store shelves. Modding is a pastime. you could just release it to those who specifically ask for it via PM with a licence of some kind. Then I will propose this, everyone that wants to play my mod when it is finished can PM me. If there is a big enough interest, or I just change my mind because I am just that nice, I may reconsider allowing my mod to be privately distributed. Never say never, and all that. Nmenth 290 Posted May 17, 2010 Introducing the Soviet Yakovlev Forger VTOL aircraft, the answer to the Allied Harrier. The Forger is slightly inferior to the Harrier as the Soviets prefer their combat up close with brute force, but do not underestimate these jets as they are still quite capable of delivering their payloads. Here are three test designs featuring different shades. Many Yuri's Revenge mods give the Soviets an air force, but it seems most just reuse the MiG Westwood made for Boris. I was going to do the same as well, but unlike a few other mods, I had no plans to remove Boris. The duplicated use of the same unit from two separate sources seemed redundant, plus the MiGs called in by Boris were too powerful to use as buildable units. As such, I decided it was necessary to create a new aircraft for the Soviets so Boris could keep his MiGs as they were. Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted May 18, 2010 Looks a little... light. but otherwise pretty awesome, what palette does RA2 use btw? Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted May 18, 2010 Looks a little... light. I agree, I am testing out darker shades right now. I will take replacement screenshots and upload them when I am satisfied with the results. This is a real Forger, as you can see, it is supposed to be light, but it admittedly doesn't look very good in game. Edit: I have added two darker versions above... The light one is the most realistic, but does not contrast well. The blue one looks much nicer, but looks more Allied. The green one looks the most ominous (and thus, Soviet), but drab green paint jobs were only used on the early Forgers. I am inclined to go with the green anyway, just because it fits the game best... after all, since when is Yuri's Revenge realistic? what palette does RA2 use btw? This one is used for units: Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted May 18, 2010 Those planes are way too small. They need to be bigger. Share this post Link to post
dbjs2009 25 Posted May 18, 2010 (edited) Those planes are way too small. They need to be bigger. Yes,it's very small they need to get bigger anyway they look good to me. Edited May 18, 2010 by dbjs2009 Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted May 18, 2010 Those planes are way too small. They need to be bigger. I don't think so, they fit nicely on the landing pads: Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted May 18, 2010 Are you planning on making a new airport/helipad building? Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted May 18, 2010 Yes. This was just a visual test, those are actually Black Eagles with Image=FORGER. Both the Soviets and Yuri will be getting their own airbase, but those buildings are low priority. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted May 18, 2010 Use stuff someone else made. It's easier and you're allowed to do it if they're freesource. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted May 18, 2010 First of all, no. But why do you even suggest it? Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 41 Posted May 18, 2010 Because the graphics you don't have already exist and they're good quality. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted May 18, 2010 Because the graphics you don't have already exist and they're good quality. Their quality is irrelevant. I explained this in my very first post in this topic. My pride will not allow it, my mod must be made by me. It will not be 97% Nmenth's mod, 3% another dozen random modders out there, it will be Nmenth's mod. I really don't care if it takes three times as long to finish by doing it all myself, for even if it does, I will be three times as pleased with my results. As previously mentioned, I mod for my enjoyment, so time involved has a different meaning to me. Would you stop doing something you enjoy sooner just because it is easier? Doctor Destiny 41 Posted May 19, 2010 I don't enjoy making graphics all that much so I don't do it. I use the high quality assets people have graciously released for free use by other people. There's nothing wrong with using free source graphics. It's just how you use them that determines the good/bad factor. It's still your mod even if you used something by someone else. YOU still had to code it, YOU still had to bug test it, YOU still had to design the ideas. I don't see the objection to using freebies because of one issue like "it's not mine." Neither is everything you use... someone else made it. You didn't even make the damn game so it's not even 100% Nmenth's work. It's like... mostly Westwood. Anyway, my fun comes from working the AI over. Now that I understand how it functions and how to write good code for it, I spend the bulk of my time fine tuning and developing my rewritten AI. Nmenth 290 Posted May 19, 2010 If you want to use other people's work, that is fine by me, but it is not fine by me for me to use other people's work. And I said the mod is 100% Nmenth's. Westwood made the game, I made the mod. I do not look forward to the AI reworking part of my mod. I have done a little AI modding before, so I know what I am getting myself into, but I am no AI expert yet. Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted July 10, 2010 A build up animation for what once was Einstein's Lab (minus shadow frames). If you are familiar enough with the original (or have a picture handy), you can see that I changed the remap because I didn't like the sloppy job they did with the original. In my mod, this building is a base building, for the Allies specifically. What's it used for? Well that's a secret... Other than the remap changes and obviously the build up animation, there are also completed damaged conditions and snow versions. In case you were wondering, it took about 5 hours. In other news, if you feel the need to refer to my mod by name, I am currently calling it Paradigma. It is an archaic spelling of Paradigm which means: An example serving as a model or pattern. A system of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality. Share this post Link to post
Guest Stevie_K Posted July 12, 2010 Really looking forward to your mod Nmenth.. It looks stunning so far. As for the part about taking other peoples work, I totally agree. There's something magical about doing things yourself from scratch. Share this post Link to post
BioBen 3 Posted July 13, 2010 Wow that looks fantastic, is that how fast it builds in-game? Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted July 13, 2010 is that how fast it builds in-game? It builds about 3x faster than that. (Note: Image updated 11th of Sept 2010, new image plays faster) Share this post Link to post
Nmenth 290 Posted July 24, 2010 Something unnecessary, but fun to make. It's actually for a site I am currently making, the site has restricted access, but I may invite some lucky few when it is more finished if I feel like it. Share this post Link to post
