ATI Radeon HD 6000 Series ''Southern Islands'' Graphics Cards For Sale from November

 

Graphics card vendors are expected to start selling AMD's next-generation GPU (Southern Islands) in November with AMD to officially announce the series in October, according to sources from graphics card players.

 

To defend its market share, AMD plans to cut prices for its ATI Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs in the near future. The action also serves as preparation for the upcoming Southern Islands GPUs, the sources noted.

 

AMD originally planned to have its next-generation GPUs using 32nm process and codenamed the chips Northern Islands, but Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) skipped its 32nm R&D for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm R&D. In response AMD adjusted its plans and decided to continue adopting a 40nm process, while changing the product's codename to Southern Islands, the sources explained.

 

AMD declined the opportunity to respond to this report saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

Seen on numerous occasions and teaser videos as in either its prototype form or just plain CGI drawings, XFX seems to have finally made a working, ready for release iteration of its HD 5970 Black Edition 4 GB graphics card in its wacky retail packaging, which it hype-marketed through teaser videos. TweakPC got to lay its hands on one of these limited edition packages, and went ahead un"boxing" it. The package is actually a bag meant to carry small sniper-rifles (good luck getting it through customs). Inside, the actual graphics card is enclosed inside a case shaped somewhat like a Belgian P90 submachine gun. If that wasn't enough, the magazine pockets on the bag contain accessory boxes that look like magazines.

 

The card itself has a redesigned cooling assembly, that looks different from what the first iteration looked like. It has grooves on its top, and a badge with a limited edition serial number. Internally, the GPUs are pushed far apart, each has its own heatsink. The fan is located in the middle, it blows air to those heatsinks located on either sides. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors. Display connectivity includes 6 mini-DP (DVI adapters included), supporting Eyefinity6. Each GPU carries the same clock profiles as the Radeon HD 5870, 850 MHz core, 1200 MHz (4800 MHz effective) memory, but addresses 2 GB of memory each. XFX seems to have commenced selling, expect it to be priced over $1000.

I personally find it kinda late for XFX to release their version of non reference HD5970. But the packaging looks pretty cool. I'm wondering hows their performance versus the existing non reference HD 5970 Sapphire and Asus cards.

I thought that new video card unleashed by ATI is an all-in-one 4GB power monster video card. After reading the articles, the card's split with two 2GB video cards. :mellow:

Nvidia Fermi's architecture seems to be flawed in too many ways that the company had to delay everything. First the heat issue and power consumption. Because of that, a dual GPU solution is delayed (and probably never going to see an air-cooled dual GTX 480 card because it is way too hot). Everything thing else is delayed.

 

On the other hand, ATI already moving on to work on their 28nm process for their ATI Radeon HD 6000 series cards.

 

Nvidia has to buck up or they are pretty screwed.

ATI Radeon HD 6000 Series GPU Codenames Surface

Even as NVIDIA is taking its own sweet time to complete building its lineup of DirectX 11 compliant GPUs to target all market segments, AMD, which got a 6 months' headstart into releasing its lineup, which ended up targeting all market segments in a span of 5 months, is readying the Radeon HD 6000 series for launch well within this year. Just as the Radeon HD 5000 series GPU family was codenamed Evergreen with its members codenamed after evergreen trees (such as Cypress, Juniper, Redwood, Cedar), the Radeon HD 6000 is codenamed "Southern Islands", with its members codenamed after islands in the Caribbean (not islands in the Mediterranean).

 

"Bart" (after Saint Barthélemy island) is the codename for the performance/upper-mid segment GPU, a successor to the "Juniper" Radeon HD 5700 series. "Cayman" (after Cayman Islands) is the enthusiast GPU, successor to Cypress, and will go into making SKUs that succeed the Radeon HD 5800 series. Finally, the king of the hill is codenamed "Antilles" (after Antilles Islands), it is the dual-GPU SKU that makes use of two Cayman GPUs, successor to the Radeon HD 5970 "Hemlock". AMD partners will be in a position to sell graphics cards based on these by November 2010. The Radeon HD 6970 "Antilles" should be out by December 2010. The lower-half of the family will likely release next year.

[Rumour] ATI Radeon HD 6000 Series Release Schedule, first iteration in October

Popular Turkish website Donanimhaber has released an expected schedule for the release of ATI's Radeon HD 6000 series. The first HD 6000 GPU to be released will be the Radeon HD 6700 series, codenamed Barts. The HD 6700 is scheduled for a release as early as October. As suggested by the nomenclature, the HD 6700 will directly replace the HD 5700 series.

 

The HD 6700 release will be followed up by Cayman in November, expected to be branded as the ATI Radeon HD 6800 series, replacing the current HD 5800 series.

 

The flagship will be Antilles, and branded as the ATI Radeon HD 6970. Antilles, as expected, will be a dual-GPU Cayman. While the HD 5970 lowers clock speeds from the HD 5870, HD 6970 is expected to feature the same clock speeds as the HD 6870 - basically a HD 6870 in CF. This will be much like the HD 4870 X2. The Radeon HD 6970 is scheduled for December.

 

The Catalyst 10.8 Codename leaks supports much of Donanimhaber's schedule. Cayman and Antilles come under the same sub-family, and it is likely that Cayman is HD 6800 and Antilles is dual-Cayman - HD 6900. Barts could very well be HD 6700 series as well. Interestingly, all three, Cayman, Antilles and Barts are West Indian Islands. The other two from the codenames list being Turks and Caicos. If the HD 6000 series follows the pattern of the HD 5000 series, we could very well have two further chips to replace Redwood and Cedar. These could very well be Turks and Caicos, releasing in Q1 2011. However, this leaves us with several unused codenames from the Catalyst 10.8 list. It could be that the list covers more than the HD 6000 series.

 

Traditionally, the x8xx product has always been the first to release. Releasing with the HD 6700 series can be a novelty. However, AMD have experimented with a x7xx card before. The first 40nm GPU was the HD 4770 - part of the otherwise 55nm HD 4000 generation.

 

An Antilles PRO is listed in the codenames - and we could have a Radeon HD 6950 GPU. However, this depends largely on the requirements. A Radeon HD 5950 - Hemlock Pro - was rumoured as well, but was never released due to a lack of competition. The suggestion that the HD 6970 will feature the same clock speeds as the HD 6870 has two implications. First, a larger performance gap between the HD 6870 and HD 6970 for the HD 6950 to fit in. More importantly, the HD 6800 series could have a lower TDP than the HD 5800 series, in which case Efficiency could be one of the key objectives of the HD 6000 family.

 

It has been a long, long time since AMD released a GPU (not counting minor upgrades such as the HD 5500 GDDR5 versions). It is fair to assume that they have been hard at work, and the lull is about to be broken by a storm of HD 6000 releases in Q4 2010 and Q1 2011.

GeForce GTS 450 CUDA Core Count, Clock Speed Surfaces

Well placed sources seem to have finally pieced together specifications of NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 450 graphics card, the company's mid-range offering that competes with ATI Radeon HD 5700 series products. In the run up to this, we've come across reports showing that the SKU is based on a GPU codenamed GF106, then we came across NVIDIA reference design PCB drawings, followed by clock speeds, and finally, pictures of the GPU itself revealing quite a bit about the die size. The most recent report affirms the specs we know till now, plus revealed the CUDA core count, which is 192. The CUDA cores are clocked at 1566 MHz, and that the memory is clocked at 902 MHz (3608 MHz effective).

 

So as a quick recap of the tech specs of the GeForce GTS 450, it's based on the new 40 nm GF106 silicon, the die area is roughly 240 mm². The GPU has 192 CUDA cores, and a 128-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface holding 1 GB of memory. The core is clocked at 789 MHz, and memory at 902 MHz (3608 MHz effective), translating into 57.8 GB/s of memory bandwidth, CUDA cores at 1566 MHz. It supports 2-way SLI, and gives you access to the latest PC graphics technologies, including support for DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.x, along with support for a wide range of NVIDIA-exclusive technologies. NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 450 will be released by mid-September.

AMD Kills ATI Brand, Future Products to Feature Brand Change

This had to happen eventually, and it did just happen: AMD has dissolved the ATI brand completely, and consolidated ATI brands, such as Radeon and FirePro under the AMD main brand. Under the new branding scheme, new graphics products AMD launches (such as the upcoming Radeon HD 6000 series), will do away with "ATI" completely from the logo, marketing material, and so on, and the market will, as it already has been doing since the AMD-ATI merger, albeit informally, refer to Radeon/FirePro products as "AMD Radeon" and "AMD FirePro".

 

AMD explains its move as an "evolution of the AMD brand portfolio", saying that consolidation of ATI-branded products under the main brand results in reduced marketing overhead. It claims to have surveyed several thousand discrete graphics-aware users in in the U.S., U.K., Germany, China, Japan, Brazil, and Russia. The survey revealed that when made aware of ATI-AMD merger, AMD preference triples; AMD brand is stronger than ATI (against graphics competitors); and that people see Radeon and FirePro product names more conspicuous than ATI, indicating a "permission" to consolidate ATI into AMD. The survey was conducted entirely by AMD.

 

 

 

The company also claimed that this is the perfect time AMD could possibly consolidate ATI brand, because Radeon products are experiencing good sales, and there's high market penetration of AMD's graphics products. Finally, AMD revealed the new brand logos that are nearly identical to the present ATI logos, of course, minus the revered "ATI".

 

 

 

Looking ahead in the future, AMD expects its Vision branding strategy to cover a wide range of PC processor products, making it easy for consumers to choose a PC. Individual processors still carry their own logos, while Vision serves as a blanket logo to describe what the PC is capable of. AMD made it clear that existing Radeon HD 5000 series product (including the Radeon HD 5000 which are being manufactured or will be manufactured), are not affected by this change.

 

The transition will take place gradually. While current products aren't affected, with future product-lines (starting with Radeon HD 6000 series, and next-generation FirePro). Partners can choose between two kinds of logos (shown in the first image above), one which is more recognizable with the AMD corporate logo embedded, and one without.

Nvidia secretly launched Nvidia GeForce GT 420.

 

This product is available to OEMs only. The GT 420 is derived from the Fermi architecture, and is fully compliant with the latest PC graphics technologies, including DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4. NVIDIA's reference design is low-profile and single-slot, it draws all its power from the PCI-Express slot.

 

Under the hood is a 40 nm graphics core (perhaps GF108), it has 48 CUDA cores, and connects to 2 GB of memory across a 128-bit wide DDR3 memory interface, with 28.8 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The core is clocked at 700 MHz, CUDA cores at 1400 MHz, and memory at 900 MHz (1800 MHz effective). Display outputs include DVI, HDMI (full-size), and a detachable D-Sub connector. The card has a maximum power draw of 50W.

Here is MSI's latest creation, the N480GTX Lightning. This GeForce GTX 480 based monstrosity is geared for extreme overclocking, and caters to the highest-end consumer segments, but at a surprisingly modest price (relatively) of $550. It features a factory-overclocked GTX 480 GPU clocked at 750/1500/1000(4000) MHz, with standard memory amount of 1.5 GB across a 384-bit wide memory interface, 480 CUDA cores, and 4-way SLI support. Where the fun kicks in is its design. The card uses a beastly-looking dual-fan double-slot air cooler that makes use of dense aluminum fin arrays, and distributed heat zones.

 

Under the hood, is a powerful power circuit that makes use of a 17-phase VRM, with four super ML Proadlizer capacitors for power conditioning, and high-C flatbed capacitors overall. There are noiseless solid-state chokes and high-grade direct FETs Power is drawn in from two 8-pin and one 6-pin power connectors. Apart from consolidated voltage measure points, DIP switches provide a certain amount of control over some settings. Overclocker-friendly feature include dual BIOS. Display outputs include dual DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort. MSI did not reveal exactly when this card will make it to the market, or whether it's a Limited Edition product.

NVIDIA GPU Roadmap To 2013 - Kepler and Maxell GPU's Coming

 

NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference 2010 opening keynote just ended her in San Jose, and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has announced the successor to the Fermi GPU that was released in 2009. The new GPU will be called ‘Kepler’ and is scheduled to be released later in 2011. Jen-Hsun said that hundreds of engineers have been working on this processor and that it will be their first 28nm design. NVIDIA said they will have billions invested into the development of the processor and that it will be 3 to 4 times the performance per watt compared to Fermi. After Kepler is released at some point in 2011 the roadmap then shifts focus to Maxwell in 2013. This processor is said to be 10 to 12 times the performance per watt compared to Fermi, a sixteen-fold increase on parallel GPU computing and will be built on the 22nm process.
