graphics going nuts with new video card

Recommended Posts

I upgraded my video card to the radeon 5770. C&C 3/kane's wrath now has some serious issues anytime I play it. The tiberium, trees, and most structures flicker, are not there at all, are half there, or everything seems to vibrate or shake like there's an earthquake on the screen.

I used to have the x1950 and everything worked fine. I can't seem to find anything on the new about the 5770 not being supported or causing issues. I've tried using earlier ati drivers as well as the latest drivers. I've tried running it with aa off/on, open gl triple buffering off/on, and at different refresh rates. I've tried running it under XP as well as Vista. I cleaned out all the old ati files before using the different drivers.

Anyone have any ideas or advice? I love playing the games but the flickering and twitching make it impossible.

XP/Vista on different hard drives.

ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD phenom 9950 2.6g

XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT)

4gig ram

directx 10

I've patched the games to the latest patches.

Being an NVIDIA user I'm not familiar with the ATI software. But when you say you cleaned out all the old ATI files/drivers how exactly did you do that. Was it via the Control Panel > Add/Remove Software?

If so, I suggest using something like Driver Sweeper (Google it) to completely remove all traces of the old installation.

Failing that, perhaps your new video card is the culprit, as in it could be damaged or malfunctioning.

to clean the old drivers I used the control panel and then drive sweeper to make sure. The card seems to run everything else fine except Starcraft. Everything in that game is off in color or just looks weird. It runs Sins of a solar empire, WoW, Civ4, Fallout 3 and Bioshock1-2 really well.. The card isn't running hot as far as I can tell watching its temp.

Only thing I can think off is some setting is different now or that C&C just doesn't like my card or it's drivers.

Another thing I noticed is the twitching/shaking keeps happening even if I open the menu and the game "pauses". The ground itself is fine but the roads or trees or buildings continue flickinger or vanishing except for a few parts or moving up and down rapidly. No idea what that means.

Lets go back to the start...

Let's check with hardware before we talk about software (drivers etc)

Is your motherboard in proper condition?

Check that your PCI slot is dirt free and the graphics card PCI2 x16 slot is dirt free.

I assume that all your hardware parts are working fine, but the problem still happen...

If hardware isnt the issue, format your whole PC again, download and install the latest drivers into the system, restart, and install the game and try again. Let us know if things still screw up.

Hmm, you say the temps seem fine, but what exactly are the GPU temps at? A lot of those symptoms could be indicative of overheating. And for that matter what are the temps of the rest of your system such as CPU? (Since you had to physically install the new card of course, I assume you did clean out any and all dust and stuff in the case.)

What's your power supply?

You're awfully quick to suggest formatting..

According to the ati control center the gpu temp is 49 to 55 depending on how hard I run it, 60 when I was testing the card for stability. CPU is running around 52. I've got 6 120mm fans for cooling the case. I've got an ultra x2 750watt power supply.

I'm "fairly" sure the gpu isn't overheating. I've run most of my games at the highest graphics settings and the only one to give me any problems is C&C 3/kane's wrath. I mean I understand it's possible but I just don't see how when everything else runs flawlessly.I've done hours of WoW on the highest settings raiding. If that wouldn't cause a crash from overheating I don't know what would. I clean the case out once a month and have filters on the fans to catch what I can.

For the xp hard drive, all I did was install xp and update it, install c&c 3 and update it, update the video card to it's latest version, and tried playing. Everything went nuts so I uninstalled the latest drivers, swept the system to get everything, then got the last version I knew worked at least on the old card. C&C still went nuts.

I tried it again this morning for giggles and most of the structures were bouncing up and down, most of the infantry was half invisible, the tiberium was flicking aka usual glitches. I played for awhile and all of a sudden the screen went grey with vertail grey and black stripes. That I could see being an overheating gpu or memory leak/glitch but I don't see how when the temps never get too high.

I'm going to try putting the old card back in and see if the game goes nuts or not.

thank you all for any and all help or advice.

The only other thing that comes to mind is a Direct X issue. Perhaps try a reinstall/update of Direct X on both your Vista and XP drives.

Hmm, yeah those temps all sound just fine. It could possibly be a Directx thing, or maybe another required module for the game like .net framework or visual studio redistributable (dunno if it needs either of those). The games are already patched so... hmmm....

Couldn't it have something to do with the screen setup or the monitor? I remember some of my games seems to jam just like you've mentioned if I change between 60 to 80 hertz. I'm not a wise guy on this topic but I've had such issues caused only by the screen setup. It mostly had something to do with the screen update rate and whether it runs in full screen or windowed mode.

Probably not of any help but I hope you'll get it working.
