EA rolls out $100 car for Need for Speed World

At last count, EA's free-to-play racer Need for Speed World had garnered more than 5 million users. The publisher is hoping some of those users have deep pockets because the latest premium car for the online racer does not come cheap.

EA today announced that the Koenigsegg CCX "Elite" Edition, the first "premium elite" car to hit Need for Speed World, is now available in the in-game store for $100. For those who feel that's a bit pricey, it is currently on sale for $75 through December 21.

Codeveloped by EA Black Box and EA Singapore, Need for Speed World launched last July. The game sports over 100 miles of in-game road to traverse, including NFS: Most Wanted's Rockport locale and NFS: Carbon's Palmont city streets, as well as a full day/night cycle.

Need for Speed World is part of EA's Play4Free label, saddled up next to other games stemming from popular EA franchises like Battlefield, Dragon Age, and the recently announced Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances.

Its just like Jeans. You have the $50 jeans and the $150 jeans. They're both exactly the same but are aiming at two different markets, because some people will only buy something because of the price tag and perceived quality.

I wouldn't buy this but I bet some people do. ;)

I facepalmed on the title itself, I'm too afraid to read on.

Usually I would say that's how life works, and you'll get more if you pay more, but I see this as mild discrimination against the middle and low class groups of users (which I imagine is the main user group for this game since it's free to play).

I might be one of those, but I'm not sure about this DLC as I'm not an NFS player myself.

The middle and low class don't pay for games anyway

If you don't want to spend this much money on a car, send me ten bucks and I'll upload a picture of my Opel Corsa ^_^

If Generals 2 supports this kind of DLC, I wonder how much the bullets for the quad cannon will cost...

This costs more than a video game! Heck, it costs more than most special edition video games! This is insane!

Since posting this, every time I read this thread there's a Wrangler Jeans advertisement at the top of the page. :P

I hope not to see such weird and silly marketing strategies for C&C Generals 2. In fact, I personally do not favor the very notion of DLC unless its free.

My thoughts exactly.

DLC is just fine for a fee, but it needs to be reasonable and have a reasonable amount of content. Gone are the days of freebies and you can blame two entities for that: piracy and second-hand distributors. While I have no problems at all with second hand shops, they pose a revenue problem for most companies so DLCs are a nice way to balance that deficit. I don't understand the whining about paying for a DLC when they're about the same as expansion packs for less of your money. Besides, if you don't want a DLC, don't buy it. It's just that easy.

Right. And that's why they should rub in their face that they can't afford this awesome virtual bull**** vehicle! Take that silly pirates!:dance:

I agree, game developers create new content for their games and share it to players. I know the implication of this post; "who the hell would buy a $100 dlc for a car". To put things in perspective, many nongamers would say, "who would buy 1000+ gaming computer or video games". Value is in the eye of the beholder. If you do not want to play it, then dont buy it.

Most DLC contents are not worth buying; at a friends house going through the playstation store, many dlc were just useless avatar and wallpaper skins. Granted, my friend bought a MW3 wallpaper but it was only 2 bucks. My point is it should be obvious that trinkets like these are created for customers who wishes more than just a video game; their enjoyment of the game is so great that they willing to pay extra. If these DLC are purchased then they will have serve their purpose.

Gamers must stop complaining and whining about DLC that they dont want to buy; they must understand that what may be worthless to you will be worth something to others. One example (sorry im still trying to find the source) was the most expensive DLC content bought was worth $160,000? I think it was for an online virtual world where the gamer purchased a virtual sports stadium, a mall and a mansion.

Another personal example was my Minecraft server. I created a MC server last year, I offered virtual trinkets and bonuses. People have donated as much as $100 to me for that. Our passion for mc was so great that these bonuses was worth lots of money. Fyi, the money donated to me was sent right back to the server, every month i had to upgrade the server due to population and the last month before i quit the game i was paying around $150.00

$100 DLC for a luxury car for that game is far worse than the Call of Duty MW2 5-map pack for $15.

Pretty soon, I will assume future overpriced DLCs as scam, enough to cheat customers to pay more out from their pockets.

It's not a scam, it's just a really cheesy marketing model. AVP suffered badly from this. After they released new multiplayer maps as DLC's, each one overpriced, barely anyone plays it online.

You're missing the point of DLC. It's not a cheesy marketing model; it's a necessary one and you have to grow with the times and expand or cling to the past like an idiot. Those are your options because DLC, and microtransactions as well, is not going anywhere any time soon. If you want to see more games, buy more products, DLC included. The gaming industry, like any other, is centered around revenue. Before you complain, think like a businessman first.

Your'e taking things a bit too literal. I didn't talk about DLC in general, but merely this overpriced nerd-potency-enhancement garbage.

Easy there captain obvious. No one said it isn't.

Before I complain? How much for the future glasses? or perhaps you are some kind of soothsayer? :P

I have no problem with DLC's. I just think some are cheesy. (a bit like if you don't have a problem with cars, but you think some are ugly).
