The Warlike History of Command & Conquer

Recommended Posts

There is a new feature article posted at IGN called The Warlike History of Command & Conquer. It basically takes a look back at the long running franchise from Kane's early days with Command & Conquer and Westwood Studios all the way to Generals 2 from new developer, BioWare Victory in 2013. Here's part of it.

In late 2011 EA announced C&C Generals 2, and showed it had learned from the hard lessons of the previous entry. In development at BioWare Victory (really a spinoff of the existing Command & Conquer team that was at EALA), the goal of the project is to bring the storytelling chops of BioWare to the traditional C&C design format in a PC-exclusive game.

That combination sat well with fans, and likely represents a sound trajectory for the series. That a 2013 game can look back to its 18- year-old predecessor for most of its inspiration, and be celebrated for it, tells the story: even after many years of sequels, revisions, and copycats, Westwood's original formula remains timeless.
