Microsoft Reveal the Xbox One

Recommended Posts

Hmmm. They did not mention what graphics system the Xbox One is using. Too bad it's not called Xbox 720. Everything is great except for the hard drive (remember the fact that games are now required to be installed before you can play -- just like PC games). Because games are getting bigger these years, it's highly recommended that a 1 TB or higher hard drive can be useful to a video game console today.

Also this other article reminds me of the Windows XP search dog: http://kotaku.com/call-of-duty-ghosts-gives-you-a-dog-customizable-mult-509058934

I think Xbox 720 would have been better, Xbox one sounds weird.

I see it also requires an internet connection, not a permanent connection but a connection.

Probably for activation (and probably this time future console games may come with serial numbers). This reminds me of how PC games are installed via Steam or Origin.

If DRM is already a failed strategy to PC gaming to combat piracy, why apply it to consoles?

The beginning of the end of great console gaming could soon be there.

I also understand 'most' games will need to be installed to run... Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the console being plug and play? :o

Yeah its an odd name, Xbox One, its the 3rd Xbox console but the name doesn't reflect that. It was never going to be Xbox 720. I was hoping they would go with rumoured Xbox Infinity name.

As the for the internet connection. Its required to activate a game once its installed.

This is most likely due to the fact that BlueRay drives are slow. They are fine for playing movies but to to slow to stream games directly of the disc. I guess BlueRay drive speed have not increased like DVD drive haves in the past. Just guessing here.

Is 500GB enough space? Probably for most people. My Xbox 360 only has a 120GB HDD, never come to close to filling it up. My PS3 has a 320BG HDD, same again, heaps of free space. And apparently, you won't be able to upgrade this HDD either. But its not all bad.

We had the opportunity to chat with Albert Penello, senior director of product planning at Microsoft this afternoon, who was kind enough to clarify a few topics for us regarding the recently-unveiled Xbox One. One thing we were quick to ask about was the integrated storage. 500GB sounds like a lot today -- but so did the 20GB unit in the original Xbox 360. The HDD there was, at least, replaceable. Can you do the same with its successor? Sadly, no. Hard drives in the Xbox One are non-user-serviceable, but Penello confirmed that the USB 3.0 port is there for external storage, which can be used for everything the internal storage can be used for. That includes game installs and downloads. So, don't fret: adding storage will be just as easy as ever.

Thumbs down to Microsoft about this though, Xbox One is not backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games. This could come back to bite them in ass at some point.

But in the end, this is best comment I read on Kotaku about the Xbox One reveal..... and the keyword here is Halo!

All MS has to do is announce a new HALO, COD, Mass Effect, Gears, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed and any other sequel to their hundreds of successful franchises, not to mention new IPs and exclusives and they win. So why is everyone worried about typical press conference announcing TV entertainment? We've been here before people. For all the gimmicky crap they show. In the end it's GAMES that make or break a console and MS has plenty of those. So everyone relax. Everything is going according to plan.

I do plan to get this, my first xbox, but after watching the whole 60min announcement, I'm still under-whelmed.

The backwards compatibility is a real disappointment... maybe I'll just pick up a cheap 360 and catch up on all the exclusives I missed out on.

I don't understand the 'big deal' surrounding backward compatibility. Just use your Xbox 360. :)

I like how the kinetic will be 'always online'... Constantly spying on you. lolololol.... :P
