The Ultimate Free-to-Play PC Games List

Recommended Posts

Updated 6/3/2020

For the official record, here's the list of free-to-play PC games that are either freeware, open-source, non-open-source or independent. Only a limited number of beta, remake, expansion, browser and flash games will be mentioned here.

The following free-to-play PC games cannot be included:
-- pirated/hacked/cracked games (discussion of this is prohibited in this forum!)
-- ROMs used in game emulators (i.e.: NES, N64, GBA, NDS, 3DS, Xbox, PS, etc. -- discussion of this is prohibited in this forum! Some exceptions are now mentioned from the Wiki free games list site)
-- adult themed games involving pornography (discussion of this is prohibited in this forum!)
-- promotional and free-to-try games only for a limited time (discussion of these can be mentioned here)
-- game demos and shareware with partial/limited content
-- abandonware/vaporware games that have little or no support (there are some exceptions)
-- incomplete or canceled game even in alpha, beta or early access stage (exception is Renegade-X)
-- 100% Multiplayer Online with no skirmish mode (ie. MMORPG, MOBA, etc. -- exception will be some browser/flash games)
-- any game listed as an add-on modification or plug-in to the original game, program or website (except for standalone mods)
-- any game listed as an alternative or clone to the original type of game (there are some exceptions)
-- any game listed as a virtual reality game that may require additional hardware (that list is short for now but may consider adding them in the future)
-- any game that only takes seconds or minutes to complete (ie. some versions of Reversi, Chess)
-- any game that is not for Windows OS (ie. Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, any video game console, etc.)
-- any game exclusively for Windows 8/10 that must be downloaded through the Windows Store (until the buggy flawed Windows Store is improved/fixed!!!)
-- any game that isn't mentioned as free or free-to-play yet (including the ones that only has the source code released such as Doom 3)

Please report any dead links and I will fix them. If there are no alternative download link(s) to that game, that game will be marked with an asterisk and you have to find it yourself. If you find that a game in this list isn't really free-to-play but considered as abandonware or something else, that game will be removed from the list.

(Note with the asterisk (*) Please do not ask me how to get or go through it. Just Google it. That game's official download link is gone and may be unsupported or else.)

Nice list! However, I've always thought that "free-to-play" is not entirely the same thing as "free game" (in that a) "free-to-play" is actually a free version of some commercial game and b) this term applies first and foremost to online multiplayer games, or games that require and Internet connection to some server).

For example, some of the games on your list require a Steam account, while others can be just downloaded without any registration and played on a PC that doesn't have an Internet connection at all. I fancy that the Steam ones are more in line with the "free-to-play" term.

-- any other game that isn't mentioned as free-to-play yet (including the ones that only has the source code released such as Blades of Exile and Doom 3)

To the best of my knowledge, the open source release of Blades of Exile includes not only the engine but also all game assets:

Therefore, we have released the source code (along with all necessary support files, graphics files, sound effects, etc.) for the Windows and Macintosh versions of Blades of Exile to the world. Do what you want with it (within the sensible legal guidelines described in the license), and have fun. [source] [emphasis added]

But even if that were not the case, the original registered game is available for free from Spiderweb's site (the source port is still preferable for modern Windows user because the original one is a Win16 game).

May I also suggest Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries as a free, open source strategy game.

On a side note, some of your links (e.g. the entire S section) are not displayed correctly for some inexplicable reason.

Mr. Flibble, thanks for the suggestion(s). I am trying my best to fix the links since there's too many coding issues.

While you're at it, maybe you'd reorganize the list from alphabetical order to genre groups too?

That could take weeks for me to do that, but I don't want to. I still have another huge list to post here in the upcoming weeks ahead.

Well, it's certainly up to you to decide but genre classifications are generally a lot easier to navigate. I know it's a huge amount of work but people will be the more grateful to you for that :)

Also, I don't remember if I mentioned it here before but you do know of Megazell's list don't you?

Update in the first post. I added about 81 games in this huge list and there's way more to come.

Added 45 Indie games to the free-to-play list. This is temporary because once that complete Indie list is done an independent page of The Ultimate Indie Free-To-Play List will be created.

There's another free list from a thread in the FED2K forums (I will attempt to add any free game(s) that has yet to be in this list):

You mention some GOG.com additions in the first post. I haven't followed closely, have there been any free games added recently there? I only remember Stargunner but it's been free for quite a while from 3D Realms' website.

Yeah, but most of those have been there for free for a long time (Stargunner and probably Ultima IV having been the most recent additions). I was asking if there were any more recent free games there that I missed.

@Nmenth, that GOG.com free list of games was already posted in the first post. So far, I counted 12 games that are permanently free to download from GOG.com.

@Mr. Flibble, the other GOG.com list of games were the ones that used to be free to download as promotional. That was the addition. There are no new permanently free games from GOG.

The point of my post wasn't the list, it was the link. The list was present because people are too lazy to look for themselves.

Thank you for your effort. However, I was asking about the new GOG.com games that were mentioned in zocom7's first post. I missed the word "promotional" and incorrectly assumed that some new permanently free games have been added recently. So the answer to my question is

@Mr. Flibble, the other GOG.com list of games were the ones that used to be free to download as promotional. That was the addition. There are no new permanently free games from GOG.

Thanks, and sorry for the confusion. Edited by MrFlibble

Specify in your post that they were promotional actions! That part is really unclear.

In fact, I don't even know why that list is there. A lot of games have been given out for free in contests by magazines and such. There's no point in including these kinds of things.

Well, to be fair, Megazell used to document one-time freebies in his list and keep them even when they were no longer available (he seems to have reworkid his list since though).

Still, I see little point in keeping a list like that. It's the equivalent of pointing and lauging, and saying "haha! You missed it!"

Even though it's technically in beta, I'm surprised Hearthstone isn't mentioned here.

Small note on that list... Warsow is under "games available to download for free at GOG.com", but it is actually simply a free multiplayer game. They just get promoted by GOG.com

Oh, and... the official EA release of Tiberian Sun includes Firestorm. No need to add that as * entry. The text of the TS entry should simply be "Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun + Firestorm"

Thanks for mentioning my project, AncientBeast.com around here. It's a bit buggy and lacks online multiplayer for now, but it's free and open source, meant to be a HoMM3 clone overall, also has similarities to Scrolls and HearthStone.

Developer of Ancient Beast here; thanks for the listing :)

Seems the link was broken, so I made a 301 redirect to point it to the proper page.

As far as I recall, the expansions weren't nearly as good as one could have hoped for anyway. :)
