PurpleGaga27 37 Posted June 4, 2015 (edited) The first time Steam OS was released to the public was in 2013 and I did not try out it anyway. But right now, it has improved significantly since then and it's still in Beta status (a 2.4 GB download): http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/download The battle of the 2015 OSs is most likely between Microsoft's Windows 10 vs Valve's Steam OS (a modified Linux) and the Steam OS is probably the best free alternative Linux OS to date. Major differences: Windows 10 focuses mostly on Internet programming/surfing (including wireless and mobile devices support) and utility resources whereas Steam OS focuses on gaming and maybe some other purposes that Windows/Linux does in the past. But Steam OS currently has a limited amount of PC compatible games on it (because it's Linux) and it might not come with Blu-ray movie and gaming support. A Steam Box console is now available for pre-order which will come with Steam OS (console release is this October): http://www.slashgear.com/steam-machines-released-for-pre-order-for-real-this-time-04386791/ Also this interesting article why Steam OS may pwn Microsoft: http://www.slashgear.com/heres-how-steamos-destroys-microsoft-24298989 Edited June 4, 2015 by zocom7 Share this post Link to post
Tore 33 Posted June 4, 2015 The good things I think Valve has brought to the table is a willingness by the GPU manufacturers to create better Linux drivers and make publishers and developers understand that there's a untapped market of millions of Linux users worldwide. The Linux community has also been making a lot of progress in usability and the UX area lately with more to come. Share this post Link to post
Doctor Destiny 40 Posted June 5, 2015 I've tried the SteamOS. As far as Linux goes, it's not very good. I've used several Linux distros and I can't stand the Steam version. It just doesn't seem to work very well. Share this post Link to post
