Let the Speculation Begin - New Command & Conquer in Early Development?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, we've pretty much reached a point where everything noteworthy in RTS has already been made and there's absolutely nothing in the pipeline from any developer. A sorry end for the genre.

Grey goo and act of aggression are the biggest disappointments to come out in recent history. Even more so because they hyped them self on previous existing games, claiming to be bring the experience and feel of those back.

Petroglyph used the "we're former westwood/eala devs and we know game making from our time on c&c etc...what do they deliver: some knockoff starcraft clone, with a ****ty campaign, boring maps and forgettable units. Only thing good about grey goo is the score, guess frank klepacki was the only one that came through on its reputation.

Same for AoA: "We learned so much from AoW, we're bringing all that goodness back". Game doesn't feel anything like AoW/HT...feels like they weren't sure they go AoW or red dragon at times. And the campaign...dear good boring as ****, pretty sure i "heard" better voice acting in porn movies.

The worse part about the "new" rts games is...the lack of modding support. Well that is because of online ratings, the engine is to difficult for the community right? Bull****! They know that if they open up their games to modding within a half year the community exposes just how lazy they've been and what wasted potential those games have.

Actually, their fan(boy)s still believe they are ex-Westwood devs (not Petro themselves), when even Klepacki said three and half years ago that not even 20% of the Petroglyph staff had anything to do with Westwood. [source]

If i remember correctly one of the dev or behind the scenes videos ,one of those generic vids were a chubby dev and a neckbeard dev are sitting on a bar stool, hyping and lying out of their arse how great and faithful their game is...those kind of vids that are supposedly for the community but are blatantly self hype videos, anyway they were talking about how they were ex-westwood and were looking forward to building a classic c&c like game, throwing around bait terms like basebuilding, resource gathering, massive armies, FK music, no online requirement etc etc.

Hell this is probably a remnant of the teenage c&c fanboy me who had a "WTF is this **** moment".

Petroglyph is made of ex-Westwood, ex-Relic and a third studio with RTS experience which I don't remember now (It keeps coming Amblin, but it's not Amblin, sorry for that) ex-Ensemble. None of them are newbies. The CEO is the lead coder of all Red Alert's, so it's not only Klepacki.

GreyGoo is well conceived and well produced. They used their own engine (by now it's working fine and other RTS can be made with it) and The BETA faction was designed by WETA Workshop which is another amazing thing about the game.

They had problems in supporting it after release. The game was working fine and stayed around 2 weeks almost not working, because they rushed out a flawed patch. The focus of the problem was balance, they (Petroglyph and Greybox) we're not convicted or in accordance on what roles the units should play in-game, so that hold the game support. Plus, there was a bunch of losers fighting the studio from even before the release, trolling everything (btw, not only this game, I saw it happening elsewhere).

Another problem for Petroglyph is that they have lost a contract or partner before GreyGoo, so they had to rush GG out and this move might have compromised the project and the effect ended up in the post-release support phase, once the game had serious unnoticed problems (or bad QA, but I ain't no insider, just speculating).

Another problem all RTS will face is the "online community", because a lot of ppl can only play against human players, everything else is waste, while the studios don't have enough money to develop an ideal game imagined by the fans.

GreyGoo is a good game, certainly is not garbage. For some arguments I made, I don't have sources and won't lookout for it, I just remember to have seen them along the last year.

we are getting out of topic, but seriously Grey Goo, is a nice game, just he goo function a bit tooooo wierd, and that the fact there is no other RTS game out there besides starcraft 2 now, makes it even better.

AoA was promising, but doesnt have any "soul" for me, as the CnC series did.

so since EA keeps holding hostage that IP, we will propably never see a great CnC game ever again.-

if only Blizzard decided to make another modern warfare RTS game like sc2.............. not w3. oh boy.....^_^

Just to get in trouble - I hope that EA release a C&C mobile game. A large portion of my gaming time is on a mobile device nowadays.

I still think a decent C&C game can be made on the device.

Of course my nightmare is the inevitable endless runner of Tanya collecting Ore with your choice of tanya-actress-for the low-low price of 30 Tiberium Crystals.
