BFME series now abandonware and free to download?

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't mention this in the Ultimate Free-to-play PC games list unless confirmed if this is permanently free and legal.

After years of support of Battle For Middle Earth online and patches, "The Smoking Man" at Revora gave away the full game links of the BFME trilogy via his signature (even the T3A admin approves): http://forums.revora.net/topic/104733-bfme-trilogy-download-links

After EA shut down the online servers of BFME and BFMEII several years ago, IDK if this BFME trilogy has now gone abandonware since neither EA/Origin are supporting them. If you try to look in Amazon for the games, both BFME and BFMEII are selling at a ridiculous ripoff price of over $100 USD!!!

BFME games have been downloaded for free for years now. This is just a clean version with cutscenes and without LotR movie music.

"Abandonware" is a made-up term with no legal meaning. What's probably true is that EA doesn't care because re-releasing the games is difficult due to licensing issues.

Anyway, do those include the zoom out mod?

EA lost the LotR license in 2011, so they can't sell or advertise the games (they merely mention RotWK on their website). Warner Bros. and Tolkien Estate, on the other hand, didn't make the game. If anyone had the ability to DMCA these, I think they would have.

These downloads are made from the DVDs or existing ISOs, so no, they don't have the zoom-out mods.

To properly patch BFME1, get patch 1.03 (last official), then patch 1.05 and finally the T3A:Online launcher (includes patch 1.06 that everyone uses). If you wish, you can apply the widescreen UI fix.

For BFME2, get patch 1.06. You can also get the T3A:Online launcher and the widescreen UI mod.

For RotWK, get patch 2.01 (last official) and patch 2.02 (separate widescreen version available). T3A:Online is working on support for this as we speak.
