Plok 323 Posted April 15, 2016 (edited) GameFront is closing on 30 April 2016. This means that many years of productive modding will go to the Recycle Bin of Time. According to the Star Trek Armada modding community I've spoken to, since the closure of their FileFront network last July, certain files made in the past few years are gone because they weren't mirrored on the main GameFront page, as the site was restructured a few times since 2011. Here's where you can get the rest (the directory structure should be the same as on the old FileFront network - this list will stay after GF closes to help traverse the Archive.org copies of the site): COMMAND & CONQUER SERIES Command & Conquer Red Alert Tiberian Sun Tiberian Sun Firestorm Red Alert 2 Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge Renegade Generals Generals Zero Hour C&C 3 Tiberium Wars C&C 3 Tiberium Wars (broken alternate section - maps) C&C 3 Tiberium Wars (broken alternate section - media) C&C 3 Tiberium Wars (broken alternate section - mods) C&C 3 Kane's Wrath Red Alert 3 C&C 4 Tiberian Twilight BATTLE FOR MIDDLE-EARTH SERIESAll that is left... Egozi44 28 Posted April 15, 2016 Holy Someone should dd all of them and reupload to other site fast D: Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 15, 2016 There's so many files that you need an entire team just to archive those, let alone reupload. Save what is important to you, and pray there are others who do the same... Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 16, 2016 I'm told this has actually happened: the Archive Team has been doing much of the archiving work since the FileFront network went down last year. Curiously, I tried to use Archive.org for testing whether I can get some files through there, and the Download Now button would be unclickable. Guess you have to pinpoint a file and a recent-enough date to get what you need. http://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=GameFront Share this post Link to post
AZ-Stalker 88 Posted April 16, 2016 Does anyone know any dedicated teams working on saving specific filefronts? PW, if you find out someone has an operation for a specific game, try and list it in so we know not to worry "too much" and can prioritize on other less popular ones. Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 16, 2016 (edited) I know of no specifics at the moment. If anyone is doing anything, they are either trying to get as much as possible as quickly as possible or just isolated projects (I assume). The Archive Team did put their archival source code up on GitHub, though. https://github.com/ArchiveTeam/gamefront-grab There's also this tracker, you can notice how much is still left to store (fairly little compared to the sum of all files). http://tracker.archiveteam.org/gamefront/ EDIT: A guy salvaged most of CoD 4 at 1.38 GB. Noice. http://www.moddb.com/games/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare/downloads/big-cod4-modpack I'm personally mostly done with TD, RA1, TS and FS. I'm gonna get some loose tools from there, then I'll proceed with RA2, YR, SFC2/OP, then we'll see. Edited April 16, 2016 by Plokite_Wolf Share this post Link to post
Egozi44 28 Posted April 16, 2016 I will peek in KW and TW, Most of what we have there we can get through moddb/PW mediafire links/ other sites (aside many random maps) Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 16, 2016 (edited) I mostly have official files on my Mediafire archive, it won't do you much good in this case. Edited April 16, 2016 by Plokite_Wolf Share this post Link to post
Phileas 0 Posted April 20, 2016 Im Download every Medal of Honor Allied Assault Mod takes soo long i will be finished(i hope)in 1 week Share this post Link to post
AZ-Stalker 88 Posted April 21, 2016 Everyone make sure to reupload anything you save to ModDB since they're offering such a service to rehost files. Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) (Hopefully) covered all Red Alert games, plus TD/TS/FS, minus those obscure tools. I'll dive into TW, leftover KW maps and (hopefully) Renegade. Generals/Zero Hour will be nigh-impossible in just a day with those two. Edited April 28, 2016 by Plokite_Wolf Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 29, 2016 Meanwhile, some ex-FileFront/GameFront staff members have created FilesNation, which should go online on midnight CEST tonight. They say they've completely archived the GameFront forums and have displayed a prototype visage for game file portals on the example of Star Trek Elite Force. Should be a good place to set up shop! Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted April 30, 2016 While FilesNation is still not online, as they still didn't manage to merge the old GameFront database with their own, http://gamefront.online/ should be up in about 2 and a half hours as of posting this. Fingers crossed, this might help us salvage more. Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted May 5, 2016 GameFront's domain now links to The Escapist Magazine, also owned by Defy Media. http://gamefront.online is most likely a fake. It sure looks like GameFront, but I just downloaded CoD 4 patches - 1.6 is erroneous and 1.7 is a 98 KB bogus with the GameFront logo in its setup. AVOID! Share this post Link to post
Guest Rabbit Posted May 5, 2016 As far as I know, gamefront.online is supposed to be legit, but they sprung into action in the middle of the last day, so they probably screwed up their archival process terribly. Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted May 5, 2016 Damaged/missing files I can understand, but fake ones... Share this post Link to post

Can you post links to files which are supposed to be broken? Share this post Link to post
Plok 323 Posted May 6, 2016 Broken (proper size and icon, but fails to initialize): http://gamefront.online/files/10492517/CoD4MW-1.6-PatchSetup.exe Fake: http://gamefront.online/files/20222884/CoD4MW-1.6-1.7-PatchSetup.exe Searched for more obvious examples, but these appear to be the only ones I can find on a quick scoop. Curiously, both on the same, very popular game (both files can be found here, if anyone is interested). Share this post Link to post
Guest Rabbit Posted May 6, 2016 (edited) Hmm... I tested both of them, out of curiosity. The first file seems like a legitimate broken file. It fails to initialize, but it does not attempt to change anything on your computer, nor does it request any outside resources. It merely has an error and exits upon clicking to acknowledge the error. The second one, that's a tough one. It looks like it is not a direct download, but rather a file downloader, in that you'd install it and it would download something from an external source. Virustotal gives it two hits, but again, upon testing it, it did not attempt to make changes to my computer, though it does try to grab an outside resource upon clicking "download." I think it is a legitimate downloader for the intended patch, as it lets you select a directory of where you'd like the downloaded files to be placed, etc. But seeing as how the file was built in 2011, I'm led to believe that the download server it is trying to connect to is offline, which is why the file as a whole does not work. I decided to pick a couple completely random files just to see if there were other signs of corruption or misleading material, and one I came across was a .wmv file about something or another (I don't really care, just figured I'd test), another was an installation for Garry's Mod. Neither of these files showed any issues. In any case, I'm not going to be bothered to test a whole series of files from that website, but while I could definitely call it an unreliable and vaguely suspicious website, I don't think their intent is malicious. I just think they attempted to archive what they could, and considering the sheer number of files, expedient timeline, and the fact that some of these files are easily over 10 years old, it's easy to see why some (or many) would be corrupt or just not work. Heck, even if there are some files with malware (not that I'm implying there are), it would take them some time to find them. Certainly worth being cautious though, I'll definitely agree to that.
