PurpleGaga27 37 Posted April 20, 2017 (edited) In 1984, the first Dune movie was mediocre, and then comes the movie ministries in later years. In 2011, Paramount was going for this reboot, but it got canned out due to budget and licensing issues. Now in 2017 after Arrival and Blade Runner projects, Denis Villeneuve is headlining this Dune reboot project by Legendary Pictures. It's going to be a challenge though. TaxOwlbear 20 Posted April 20, 2017 I love everything Dune (except for the non-Frank Herbert novels), so colour me psyched. Share this post Link to post
MrFlibble 31 Posted April 20, 2017 David Lynch's Dune wasn't mediocre, or at least, de gustibus etc. I know some fans were disappointed by the ending and/or such and such details not corresponding to the book, but personally I've always regarded it as Lynch's own interpretation of the source material, to which he is perfectly entitled. Also don't forget that Frank Herbert had a consulting role in the movie's production. The miniseries doesn't follow the book's plot 100% either. I didn't like how they introduced the travelling Irulan subplot. I understand that it was for narrative purposes but that didn't make any sense to me. Also some of the cast were pretty off compared to their characters' descriptions in the book IMO. I liked the miniseries Dr. Kynes though (IIRC the actor's name is Karel Dobry), and did not Max von Sydow in Lynch's version. Ian McNeice did a very good Baron too. Either way, I'm not really excited about the new movie. Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted April 23, 2017 I loved the David Lynch version... it was surreal, I mean the book was better... but for a newbie into the universe, it was mind-blowing. But I enjoyed the bomb scene at the end of the 2nd episode/book/thingy of the mini-series. I think Dune is always going to be one of those IP that is hard to execute. Share this post Link to post

However, I would like to hope Dennis Villeneuve is a passionate director who can put the time, effort and justification into making a deeper film project for the modern age. It would introduce a whole new generation to Frank Herbert's universe. With the right budget and a really solid team, modern film making techniques, this very well could open up the Dune universe in ways never previously imagined. That for me is a rather excitable prospect. As you say though, it's hard to execute. So I'm not holding my breath just yet. Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted April 25, 2017 I think Dune would work better as a TV show, that can explore the characters and the universe better. It wouldn't have the budget to do the 'universe' properly... but I take character over CGI any day. Share this post Link to post
Guest Stevie_K Posted April 26, 2017 I'm curious but I have low expectations. I'm generally not keen on movies put out under Legendary Pictures. Share this post Link to post
