Wargaming.net becomes trigger-happy on YouTube

Recommended Posts

Asset flipping assholes are joined by Wargaming.net of World of Tanks fame in whiny DMCA takedowns on videos critical of them. Let's all point and laugh at the village idiot in a corporate suit.

Also, if you don't know about him yet, SidAlpha is a small but quality-driven YouTuber who covers both AAA and indie devs when they're acting up, and unlike most people who just make clickbaitey content, he tries to think his statements through. He recently caught the eye of TotalBiscuit and Jim Sterling themselves. Check him out.

I hear more and more stories about bull**** copyright claims on YouTube. The whole situation getting out of control. AngryJoe has made video about it in the past. Such as this one...

Angry Joe's problem is more with big corporations (Disney/Lucasfilm, Nintendo etc.) using content ID claims that demonetize his videos (something Jim Sterling found a witty way to circumvent). What happened here was a full-on DMCA claim, as in the three-strikes-and-you're-out kind. Speaking of Jim Sterling, he made a short video on the subject and will make a full Jimquisition episode (which will reach a lot more viewers than SidAlpha can at the moment), this will be quite a sight to watch.

Gratuitous vampirical tendencies towards gaming companies aside, it's true, this is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. What I find concerning is that Wargaming.net isn't a bunch of retards like the Romine brothers of Digital Homicide (in)fame, but a company that's been there for years and that's behind some very popular games. Who knows which major company will be the next to try and silence someone who's critical of their apparently shady business...

Wargaming also directly used the DMCA system to threaten Youtubers, claiming "defamation" - which is not what the DMCA system is for. Even the Digital Homicide brothers at least pretended it was about copyright, even though it obviously wasn't.

Youtube should have a reverse DMCA system - if you abuse the system too many times, your ability to issue claims and strikes gets removed, and you have to settle the case in court directly. I doubt that anyone would do that (especially salty small developers).
