PCG Poll: Create the perfect RTS

Recommended Posts

I didn't forget multiplayer. It's part of the consistent design aspect. But you still need a good hook to draw you in so you want to spend time in that world for the singleplayer and multiplayer. If you don't have a good hook with the narrative, even if it's MP only, you'll fall flat. That's what happened to the first Titanfall. It was MP only, had great aesthetics and mechanics but lacked a hook to really pull you in to keep you playing for a long time. It was fun for a while but once the initial spectacle wore off, it felt somewhat bland. That's only my take and being a PC first title with a low population, how many others felt. MP is important for longevity but when establishing a new brand, it can't be your only hook either. Remember also, Bansh, my list is hardly comprehensive. My take is at the higher level instead of the minutiae of the mechanics themselves. You need the high level aspects to be right before you can deconstruct the smaller elements of play.

PC Gamer updated the RTS discussion. Well guess what, after days of polling users, it comes down to a mash-up perfect RTS called Command Age: War Conquer:

But thanks to C&C fans, the perfect RTS mash-ups that come closest are C&C and Supreme Commander...... Hmmmmm.

The differentiation of JRPG and Western RPG as genres is something questionable, as you can see in the "Cultural Differences" section of the article of the wikipedia below. Anyway, it is mostly due to "cultural mechanisms", but hardly any game mechanisms itself. However, due to the globalization, the tendency is that the cultural differences between RPG games made in Japan with the western ones may fade away in the next years.

I can't agree with that, and I don't agree with the article. In my opinion, the distinction between WRPG and JRPG is mostly about mechanics and design, with the former having a focus on free roaming and blank-slate characters with high customisation in contrast to turn-based combat and pre-set characters and narrative. It's not even based on the country of origin; the Darksouls games are WRPGs and Dust is very much a JRPG, even if the former comes from Japan and the latter doesn't.

At the end of the day, my straying off topic didn't even hurt anything. The poll was bad and PC Gamer should feel bad.
