It was the analog video tape used from the beginning of tech. The US discontinued the VHS format in the early 2000s where DVD pretty much replaced the new movie media. Blu-ray and streaming are most likely going to replace the DVD soon.

Everybody's Gone to The Rapture used the CryEngine for this realism. But I think this would look even more realistic if it's used with Unreal Engine 4.
