How do the companies that sell domain names establish them in the first place?

 

Been wondering that for a while...

So... .gov is owned by the US... Does that mean if another country wants a .gov.[name government here] wants one, they have to go through some type of US thing?

So basically, verisign owns most of the common ones...(.com, .net) :shock:

naaah not anymore, they all used to be Versign, but it's all open nowadays.

 

.gov is reserved for the US government. A country (say Australia) that wan'ts it's own governemtn sites will use gov.au - i.e. it's own "TLD" - Top Level domain.
