Rumour: New Xbox, PlayStation Consoles To Be Announced in March
Both Sony and Microsoft will announce their next-generation consoles in March, according to a Game Informer report. The article, which appears in the February issue of the magazine, further suggests that the announcements will be made by way of Apple-style press conferences, which will take place ahead of GDC San Francisco (March 25-29).

"E3 in June may be the industry's biggest event, but both companies want to give their systems their own limelight. That doesn't mean E3 won't be without its surprises. Next-gen games will be announced at the convention in preparation for the systems' release at the end of the year."

The magazine further alleges that the next-generation PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will release before the next Xbox system (which itself is codenamed Durango, but widely believed to have a retail name of "Loop" or "Infinity").

This report flies in the face of recent statements by Hiroshi Sakatomi, Sony's VP of Home Entertainment, which suggested the new PlayStation console wouldn't be announced until May at least. "I can only say that we are focused on the E3 gaming event, scheduled for June" Sakatomi-san told Spanish website Emol.com. "[The] announcement may be in that minute or even earlier in May."

Don't know how much to believe here but I get this strange feeling that both the new Xbox and PlayStation are going to end up having some stupid sounding names attached to them.

They need to come up with something other than "more powerful than the last one" to get even the slightest of my attention.

 

To me they look like nothing but expensive and restrictive toys that will entertain you for a while, and then sit and collect dust.

I'm happy to say my PS3 has nearly survived an entire console generation, not one break down! That being said I barely play it, but still.
