USB Problems

jeez I feel like the only noob who posts here...

anyways I'm having some problems with an externl hard drive, when I connect it nothing happens, windows doesn't realize that i's connected any ideas?

Do you have problems with other USB devices?

 

Does your motherboard support USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? Most USB drives need USB 2.0 to even power up.

 

Make sure that your motherboard drivers are up to date and that Windows has drivers for your USB hub installed. Look in the Device Manager for anything USB related. Check down the list for something called "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

well this drive has worked for a few months and now it just randomly disconnected and then I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it said that windows didn't recognize it

It sounds like the drive is going bad, nothing to do with the computer itself. Try it on different computers if you ever get the chance just to see if others recognize it.

well I think it was just overheating, thank god it's not dying I have EVERYTHING on that drive (my laptop drive is 40gb and my music alone is 20gb)
