Modifying a game map

I downloaded this program that allows me to open Big files and I was able to open the .big file for the maps that come with the game. How do you properly extract the maps so that you can edit them and then use then modified version you created ?

I figured it out.. Only one problem is the view screen is mostly black and I don't what is where unless you know the map well.. You see the enemy as whatever color you picked and yourself where ever you and the enemy are on on the map. However you don't see terrain. Suggestions ?
