LOL at least now I know I'm not alone! I find mysef starting off at one article about chess and ending up reading up the theory of evolution! Israel actually. Conscription is enforced (3 years for men, 2 for woman) and everyone joins the army as a private. Because of the relatively short army careers (most people will only do their 2/3 years) promotions come quite fast at the lower levels (before NCO and 2nd Lieutenant).

the NYTimes actually tested Wikipedia against the brittanica and world book and found that wikipedia was more accurate in a lot of cases. I'll have to look for the link on slashdot - quite an interesting read. About the ranks - don't forget that although the names and ranks are somewhat equivalent on an international level the amount of responsibility that is given can vary (I was a corporal in charge of 30 soldiers after 6 months).

Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lance_Corporal and: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-commissioned_officer (the UK parts)... Lance Corporals aren't that high up - they're Junior NCOs. I find it hard that you would have to be in the army for 3 years to get one of these. Also notice that it mentions that you can get one by being a specialist like: "clerks, drivers, signallers, machine-gunners, and mortarmen".

I'm not waiting to compare - if I don't have it preordered I will be buying it as close to release as possible (and running home to play it too! ). Now... who do I have to kick to get a Linux version?

the idea is novel... What would the game play be like? Would you be going around the real world looking for the hacker - or a mix of a virtual internet worlds and the real world. What would fighting look like? "I throw my sudo at you!" "I counter with a kill -9!" "undercut with rm -Rf /" "knocked out with a kernel panic" ?

Seems to me as though the setting has potential.... though I admit that I don't have time to read the whole text it looks like the begginings of a great game! Now, with things as they are I wouldn't be to sure that EA are going to even want to accept new ideas for a C&C based game - though you never know - and you should try and submit it into them. Another option may be to try and tap in to the community as is... I mean, check out the amazing design ans graphics power of some of the guys out in the modding community. By teaming up with some of them you could either create a total remod of, say, Generals - or to take things further, create a whole new "fan" game based on the series... There are enough talented people with time on their hands out there - you just have to find them...
