EA Talks About the Future of RA3 on Playstation 3

Recommended Posts

Back in early June we reported that the Playstation 3 version of Red Alert had been put on hold. Nothing was explained at the time other than the resources were being focused on development for PC and Xbox 360. Recently VideoGamer.com visited EA's UK HQ for some hands-on time with Red Alert 3, and while they were there, they asked EALA's Amer Ajami about the future of the game on the Playstation 3....

When VideoGamer.com visited EA's UK HQ for some hands-on with the title, EALA producer Amer Ajami told us that when development began the developer found that its game engine wasn't suited to the PS3.

He said: "We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture. PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it's very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn't designed for PS3."

However, there is still hope for PS3-owning Red Alert fans. Ajami told us that EALA "might go back and do something with the PS3 later on".

Tiberium will probably be the shelved as well.... The UT3 engine is rather a tough cookie to get to work on the PS3l. It took Epic Games another 3 full months of development to crack the PS3. And a couple of developers who have attempted FPS games on the PS3 with the UT3 engine have all but failed to get it working.

It has been said by numerous developers who have managed to get titles out on the system, that once you get to grips with the PS3's complexities and start digging, it's an absolute realm of possibility. Although may be harder work, it is work well paid off for the challenge that the system presents. But as we all know, EA's development cycles don't offer the time and money that such a challenge creates. If Tiberium is to get out on time, and if any C&C title is to ever grace the PS3, it's going to take a lot of corporate teamwork and advice from EA developers who have PS3 games under their belts.
