Round Up of Red Alert 3 Reviews

Recommended Posts

Lots of Red Alert 3 reviews have popped up over the past few days, so here is round up of them all.

Tom's Games | 9/10

It would have been easy enough to churn out an updated version of Red Alert 2 with. While the days of Westwood Studios are long gone, credit must be bestowed on EA's development team for taking some big chances, not just with an entirely new faction and game-changing units but for introducing a co-op mode that works so well that you're left wondering why it wasn't added a long time ago. Red Alert 3 feels - and plays - like an inspired piece of work with deep strategy gameplay that will make you sweat and outrageous theatrics that will keep you smiling.

Gamers Daily News | 9.2

There is an incredible amount of fun to be had with Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, it will certainly have you sniggering away with its humorous storyline and the blissfully violent soundtrack will have you screaming for glory as you conquer the world. It is a little formulaic and is not a far cry from all of its predecessors but the flexible combat options make for an interesting and constantly changing strategy.

CNET Australia | 8/10

A few problems aside, Red Alert 3's cooperative campaign and cool new faction offer plenty of enjoyment for players who don't mind a little cheese with their meat. This isn't exactly the genre's next step forward, but it's a slick and entertaining evolution of a classic franchise that's hard to dislike. Rest assured, that quirky exterior masks a strong campaign and an equally substantial multiplayer component that will keep you and your dolphins busy well into 2009.

GameFocus | 9.0

If you like the Command and Conquer series Red Alert 3 is a must buy. If you are new to real time strategy games this one might be a bit more daunting for some player then they may like, but the tutorial and the rest of the game make it a must buy as well.

As you can see, all great scores there. Just click on the links above each sample to read the full reviews.

This caught my eye:

........but for introducing a co-op mode that works so well that you're left wondering why it wasn't added a long time ago.

In a conversation I had with Adam Isgreen a couple of month's ago, he actually said this about the co-op.

Well, you have to understand that co-op was something that we (i.e. Westwood and later EA) really wanted to implement fully into RTS games for years now. It requires a lot of thought and pre-planning to make work, especially in a scripted campaign. We were going to attempt it for C&C3 (version… whatever it was) since we had the time to re-engineer the scripting system to function in a peer-to-peer environment. When that was postponed, the work on that system stopped as well. There’s a lot of challenges to getting it working correctly, which is why it took until RA3 for EA to get it in. I know they’ve wanted to do it since C&C3 as well.

Just thought I'd pop that in as a reference. So yeah, that's the reason why it hasn't been done sooner. ;)
