Red Alert 3: Uprising Previewed at IGN

Recommended Posts

IGN have posted a preview of Red Alert 3: Uprising after getting their first look at the Red Alert 3 expansion pack. It covers a lot of what we already know with a few extra bits of info, plus the same screen shots that we have posted here are available with this preview as well. Here's a sample.

For the added Commander's Challenge mode, EALA is building in 50 missions that take place all around the globe. This mode is separate from the campaigns and comes with its own interface and setup. From a world map you'll choose which mission you'd like to take on next, some of which consist of wiping out opponents on a map, some of which have special objectives like securing oil platforms, and all have snippets of live-action cutscenes featuring the characters involved. After you complete one mission more are unlocked, and it's up to you whether you want to try and take on all 50 or head along a critical path and engage in as few as possible. By completing missions you'll also be able to unlock units and tech upgrades for use in successive conflict, which gives you a chance to check out some of the new, single-player only additions.

The Allies, for instance, get a Pacifier, a large floating tank armed with machine guns and the ability to deploy and fire long range artillery blasts. The Empire gets Archer Maidens, infantry units that run around with glowing bows that can hit ground targets but are particularly effective when used against foes in the sky. For a special ability these troops can fire out arrow volleys that can inflict damage across a wide area. The really big draw was the Giga-Fortress, a massive Empire unit that can float along the water and blast out missiles and cannon shots. It's not limited to the water, however, as it can transform into a floating robot head and emit an ultra powerful laser from its mouth which, at least in the version we saw, was shredding almost instantly everything it touched. Since these units are limited to single-player right now, don't expect to be piloting Giga-Fortresses in online matches anytime soon.
