Malevolence 6 Posted April 4, 2009 (edited) Right now, ask yourself this set of questions. What do you intend to do with a new rig? Admin, multi-tasking, entertainment (HD), simple gaming, hardcore gaming? If its admin and simple gaming, just stick with the old one. Don't bother wasting money on Core 2 duo or quad now because it'll be dirt cheap when Intel Core i5 comes out 3 months from now. The least you could do for your Pentium 4 is to upgrade the rams to 3gb. If you can't wait for good performance on games and entertainment, wait 3 more months for a gaming processor Intel Core i5, a 4 core 8 thread cheaper alternative to the high end core i7, a processor that will probably phase out Core 2 (duo, quad). If you are patient for the Windows 7 era, it'll be probably 2010. It'll be a safe year for a new PC because new graphics card will support DirectX 11, and USB3 will be out then and probably seeing hardware using PCI Express 3.0 or something. I can't decipher this text... what are you even saying? I can make out "gaming processor Intel Core i5", but that's it... and that's pretty stupid because these days there's no real "gaming processor" anymore. There's the basic stuff like Pentium Dual-Cores/Athlon X2s, and then there are the Core 2 Duos and Quads/Phenoms, which is where you want to start if you don't want to bottleneck the graphics card. Core i5 is a dual-core low-cost Nehalem variant, that's all. Windows 7 has been reported to have had its release date moved forward into October of THIS YEAR. Things seem to be going very smoothly for Microsoft, and as such, to respond to Black Fox, go ahead and wait it out. At that time you'll be able to build a very nice, cheap Core i5 system that will take all you can toss into it; you won't have to come near that 2000 dollar limit (unless that's in NZD, then yes, that's about what you're looking at for the cost of a Core i5 system when the parts are released into the market). Malevolence 6 Posted April 4, 2009 Core i5 is a dual-core low-cost Nehalem variant, that's all. Says who? Intel Core i5 (Lynnfield) is a quad-core chip that has 8 threads (with HT), 8MB L3 cache, integrated memory controller and Turbo Boost just like the Core i7 (Bloomfield), but it doesn't have QPI and lacks support for triple channel DDR3 memory, because it will support dual channel DDR3 memory. and Black_Fox, you haven't tell us what do you plan to use the new rig for primarily? Malevolence 6 Posted April 4, 2009 Core i5 is definitely the answer for you. As for the rest of the components, we'll discuss it later once Intel Core i5 is out and you're ready to buy and build a rig. Share this post Link to post

Right then, I was thinking of Clarkdale. But my point still stands; pretty much every new CPU will handle games however you want, it's mostly dependent on the graphics card. Black_Fox 0 Posted April 4, 2009 (edited) may be too much for this year and next year so just buy post 4# i think quad will run windows 7 Edited April 5, 2009 by Black_Fox Share this post Link to post

Black_Fox 0 Posted April 5, 2009 no not yet what do you think or just wait ? Share this post Link to post
Malevolence 6 Posted April 5, 2009 If you are eager to get a quad processor now, for Intel Core 2 Quad, get at least 9550 3.0Ghz or the cheaper AMD Phenom II Quad processors. I highly recommend 3 months wait. Besides, I am planning to get Core i5 too. Share this post Link to post
