Polish localisation of C&C 95

Recommended Posts

That's not saved as UTF-8... it's saved in Central european Windows encoding. To encode as UTF-8, open it in notepad, go to "Save As", and set the encoding at the options below the filename.

[edit]

Seems my setup tool still can't load less-than-three character language names. bah.

I uploaded an updated version where that's fixed:

http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/beta/ccconfig.rar

[edit]

These should be split in 2 lines using \n so it fits:

adjust_mouse_sensitivity=Automatycznie dostosuj częstotliwość myszy do roździelczości

centered_duplicate=Środkowy (podwojony rozmiar jeżeli możliwy)

This should be shortened somehow:

stretch_to_custom_resolution=Rozciagnij do zwyczajnej rozdzielczości

If I can believe Google, it's not translated correctly either - "custom" means special, different from the standards, chosen by the user. So basically you need to translate "stretch to different resolution".

"Custom" in Polish may be translated to simple "Własne". As You said Nyerguds, the user specified he's own options and save them so they are "own" ("Własne").

adjust_mouse_sensitivity=Automatycznie dostosuj częstotliwość myszy do roździelczości

I hope, that this "roŹdzielczości" wrote You Nyer, not Devil...if so it is a very noticeable spell error. Appropriate form is: "RoZdzielczości" (i just capitalised "Z" to show where the error was).

stretch_to_custom_resolution=Rozciagnij do zwyczajnej rozdzielczości

'Rozciągnij do własnych ustawień". Writing "rozdzielczości" is useless here. It's obvious that only screen may be stretched...or PC's have still thrilling secrets beyond them...

Hmm, can you tell me exactly on which mission and string that happened? It could indicate I forgot to add a character to the font.

It was in "Milicja" font after 1st mission in 'Global Theater Map".

Strange...4 dictionaries says i translate it good, custom=zwykły/zwyczajny

But here it meant Niestandardowa and in stretch_to_custom_resolution i do it terrible ehm...

Should be niestandardowej ;/

So i have idea how to write shorter form...It can be Niestandardowa rozdzielczość

Nyer and for that 1st i rewrite it:

adjust_mouse_sensitivity=Automatycznie dostosuj częstotliwość myszy \ndo rozdzielczości

centered_duplicate=Środkowy \n(podwojony rozmiar jeżeli możliwy)

With that custom do what Tray said... its even shorter D:

Oh boy...install any localised game and check what is written under English word 'Custom". About 90 % of them have "Własne". I wouldn't change that 'coz it works fine after 20 years of polish translation...

Let's focus on your propositions:

But here it meant Niestandardowa and in stretch_to_custom_resolution i do it terrible ehm...

Should be niestandardowej ;/

No.

First of All. NEVER translate anything literally. Just remind yourself, Polish translations of "Die Hard" or "Prisonbreak". :) Also look at the length of the sentence: "Rozciągnij do rozdzielczości niestandardowej". Moreover everyone knows that that only resolution can be streched.

adjust_mouse_sensitivity=Automatycznie dostosuj częstotliwość myszy \ndo rozdzielczości

I think it's too long. You could use abbreviation of "Automatycznie" ('Auto."), but i don't see in this sentence "resolution" which You have added to translation. Also there is no "Automatycznie" ("Automatically")....

It's more than simple. Adjust means "Dostosuj" but we may use other form of "Dostosowywać" - "Ustaw".

Sensitivity...nothing more and less than "Czułość".

So whole sentence should look like: "Ustaw czułość myszy". ("Adjust mouse sensitivity"). Google translator even suggest "Reguluj czułośc myszy". Both are good..both can be used it's just depends on which form do You like.

The more commonly found meaning of "custom" is "a habit, a traditional and widely accepted way of doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time".

That is NOT the meaning we need here. The meaning of this "custom" is "Made in a specific way for a particular user." See also, "customize", "custom-made".

Traymen: length wasn't really the issue. It just needs to be split in two with a \n somewhere in the middle, so it appears on 2 lines in the setup tool. But for the line "Automatycznie dostosuj częstotliwość myszy do roździelczości", to appear correctly, I'd have to split in the middle of "częstotliwość".Since I have no idea how to correctly split words in Polish, I just asked here. This should also give you some idea of the maximum string length.

I can't judge the quality if either translation here though; just giving you some idea of the actual issue, and the approximate length limitation.

One more note: if you insert a \n somewhere, do NOT leave spaces around it.

Here's the new working setup tool, with the lang_pl.mix, and Devils' translation, converted to correct UTF-8 encoding.

http://nyerguds.arsa...fig_pl_test.rar

All you need to do to test and edit the strings file is unpack the rar in a new folder, open ccconfig, open ccconfigpl.lan in notepad, and edit it. You don't need to restart ccconfig to refresh the language file; all you need to do is switch to a different language and back to Polish and it will re-read the file.

Note that you will have to enable cnc-ddraw in the setup tool to see most options.

At the beginning of this post i would like to apologise @Devils for my misunderstanding. I thought You were making in-game Option changes. Mea culpa x 3...

But'am if i have to be honest, You made my day with this sentence:

increment_start_music=Odpowiadaj kampanijnemu rozpoczeciu utworu do numeru misji\n(to zastępuje losowanie muzyki dla kampanii)

:)

OK, back to work...

I have made some changes in C&C Setup Files. Not much - changed few things to be more readable.

These translations i'm sure:

enable_mod=Uruchom modyfikacje

language_code_subfolder_in_game_folder=Podkatalog gry z kodem języka

(it's a domestic change. Replaced "subfolder" to "catalogue" 'coz i was learned that there are "sub-catalogues")

remix_scores=Włącz remiksy melodii i ukryte utwory

(let the "remiksy" stay 'coz there is no "x" in Polish alphabet and also it's more proper form in dictionary)

shuffle_start_music=Losuj utwory w grze jednoosobowej

enable_new_credits_track=Zezwól na nowy utwór w napisach końcowych

handle=Pseudo

(Englishman have their own "Nicknames", Poles have their "Pseudonimy")

needs_at_least_640x480=Wymagane minimum to 640x480

run_in_windowed_mode=Uruchom w oknie

adjust_mouse_sensitivity=Reguluj czułość myszy

enable_nocd=Włącz tryb bezpłytowy

enable_new_credits_track=Zezwól na nowy utwór w napisach końcowych

(just tell are there more than 2 new tracks for credits?)

destination_address_help=Docelowa sieć adress musi być w formacie xx.xx.xx.xx\Gdzie xx jest adresem szesnastkowym (np. 73.0F.2C.8A).

(domestic change)

And these...not so much:

disable_scrolling_on_buttons=Wyłącz przewijanie myszą

Does it block just on sidebar or also anywhere else?

increment_start_music=Odpowiadaj kampanijnemu rozpoczeciu utworu do numeru misji\n(to zastępuje losowanie muzyki dla kampanii)

Mostly i would like to know what exactly is happening with music at start of a game. The translation of @Devils is smth like: "Answer "campanish" song to start the mission number, \ n (This replaces the draw of music for the campaign" (i gave it to google translator 'coz i had a problem to understand this sentence).

back_buffer_in_video_memory=Powrót buforu pamięci wideo

It's a @Devils translation but im not sure of it. I have many many times encounter this message, but never know what exactly it is. Most of net info is written so...whatever...that even after translation i have no idea what does it do.

Devils translated it as "return memory to video memory". You know - i'm not from IT business, but i think it's smth about "background" or such things.

I also left the "Niestandardowe".

And last question (in the matter of in-game strings).

If i make diacritical marks in it - are You able to encode that? Or better is to send You in *.txt file?

enable_new_credits_track

The "Credits" track is a new music track with bloopers from briefing videos and audio recording. It is only ONE track, played for both sides, on the score screen after finishing the last mission of the game.

disable_scrolling_on_buttons:

This prevent scrolling UPWARDS on the "Options" and "Sidebar" BUTTONS. nothing else. The corners still work to scroll diagonally.

fix-safescrolling.png

increment_start_music:

There are four possibilities for setting the music to play at the start of a mission in C&C v1.06c.

  • No options selected: Play the default start music (configured in RULES.INI to "Act On Instinct")
  • shuffle_start_music selected: Play a randomly chosen track.
  • increment_start_music selected: Play the track number of the mission number (the increment_start_music option), so mission 1 has the default track ("Act On Instinct"), mission 2 uses the one just after "Act On Instinct" in the music list, mission 3 uses the track 2 after "Act On Instinct", and so on.
  • shuffle_start_music and increment_start_music selected

The 'increment' logic only works for campaign missions though, since the mission number of a Covert Ops missions isn't really useful data.

So if you activate them BOTH, then Covert Ops missions will use random start music, and the campaign will use the increment logic. So in that case, the "shuffle start music" option is not used for the campaign, even though it's activated. That's what the extra message between ( ) on the 'increment' text means.

okay. There's one more part to this; to make an installer, I need a few strings for the installer info.

[Messages]

eng.WelcomeLabel1=Welcome to the C&C95 Polish Language Pack Setup Wizard!

eng.WelcomeLabel2=This program will install the Polish language pack on your C&C.

[CustomMessages]

eng.AppName=Command & Conquer Gold 1.06c Polish language addon

eng.nogame=ERROR: The game was not found in the selected directory. Please select the directory where Command & Conquer is installed.

eng.EnableLanguage=Enable Polish language

And then there's a small readme file for the installation. You can find the original English version here:

http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/language/installer_readme.rtf

Of course, you can adapt it to say Translations done by Traymen <???@???.???> and Devils <???@???.???>

Easier part for me :P *Readme* file is for You @Devils.

My *localisation team* is growing :) I have found a guy who is making subtitles to VQA movies. I think it will take him a while, but i would like to make a note in *Readme* file, that "VQA translation is on the way". Of course if You do not mind. ;)

@Devils

Does this sentence is in Polish for You?

Właczenie języka polskiego zmieni cały tekst w grze will, dźwięki jednostek i głosy EVA. Nie zmieni języku podczas filmów odprawiających.

What is doing here "will"? Rest of this sentence don't have even a syntax...

Programy użyte:

Not better "Użyto programów"?

I must say that this translation is really bad. :( It mostly seems to be translated through Google Translator (syntax errors seems to prove it).

Correct this...i don't want to play as censor to check everything what You translate...

Devils/Traymen: You only had to translate one of these three "Enabling the XXX language will..." lines though... namely the one that is applicable here; the first one.

Anyway, as Devils requested by email, I attached the translated source file for the conquer.pl strings file (apparently there was some minor diacritics-related stuff left to fix). I converted it to UTF-8, so it should open correctly without any conversion.

General editing rules:

-Never insert or delete lines, only edit them

-Keep in the # characters when editing; they indicate line breaks.

-The blank lines are intentional, leave them in too :P

-For the love of god don't put anything on the first line (especially spaces or tabs X_x)

If you want to test it yourself, follow these steps:

-Convert the text file to DOS-852 (Central European) text encoding, and save as new file (just to be safe, to keep the original in UTF-8)

-Open the new text file in the Ingame String Editor

-Search for all # characters and replace them by line breaks (ctrl-enter in the editor)

-Go to file -> "Save As", select the C&C1-type strings file from the dropdown list, and save as "conquer.pl".

-Put the conquer.pl in the game folder and it will be read instead of the one in the mixfile.

(Ignore how special characters look in the Ingame String Editor, it can't display them correctly in DOS-852 anyway. The closest you can get is setting the font to Terminal, which uses DOS-437-United States)

Oh, and if you already downloaded Ingame String Editor, be sure to download it again since I recently hacked it to fix the bug where it kept giving the "you haven't saved, are you sure you want to quit?" message even if the file WAS saved.

A few remarks:

  • I think you botched that quote at the end; wikipedia says it's "A niechaj narodowie wżdy postronni znają, iż Polacy nie gęsi, iż swój język mają", and Google agrees :P
    (and Polish is totally a geese language :P)
  • You didn't translate the "by" in the used tools: "Ingame Strings Editor by Vesa Piittinen"
  • That word, "Zespół", you added at the end... what does that mean? Is it meant to be there or is that an error?

  • Heh, i hadn't seen that :) Corrected.
  • Because on localization is now working more than two people - not like at the beginning just You and me - i have added the "The Crew / Team" sentence at the end, just to indicate that this add-on is made by few people who gave their time for this project.

Eh? I got the Polish quote from the English Wikipedia. I never used Google Translate. I just googled the original Polish quote you gave, and found out that it never appeared on the internet in that form. When I looked for the author instead I got the wiki page with the Polish correction.

OH! I thought You have used Google Translator...nvm. But i have to admit that english version of this quote is really good translation :)

Well my point was that the POLISH version of the quote on that page wasn't the same as yours :P

As for the quote, well, I think they could just have put "geese" there instead of "Anserinae".

In the matter polish localisation...

One of my man has made a subtitles to VQA movie, however i am not sure of the "effect" of his work. Putting it bluntly - there are too many losses in quality to play with that. The result you may see here:

http://www.speedysha...Eu/bkground.vqa

EDIT:

Moreover he just told me that he converted the AVI directly to VQA quality... :rolleyes: God give me strengh...

um, avi converted directly to VQA gives TS videos, not TD videos :o

btw, I can't download from that site without registering. Use megaupload :P
