Guest Rabbit Posted November 8, 2013 Is it in any particular game, or do you mean just in general? If you're both using laptops, one of you could make a wireless hotspot (but you'll both be disconnected from the internet). I think in theory you could connect an ethernet cable from one laptop to the other, but frankly, the best way to do it is if you're both connected to a router (either by wireless or by cable). The most important question is what game you want to play on LAN, because some games are easy, others need special patches. Share this post Link to post

Guest Rabbit Posted November 8, 2013 Well, to start, you'll both need to connect to a router. You could probably connect your PC to a router with the cable, and if it's a wireless router, he could connect his laptop to it, otherwise you'll need a second cable. Once you've both installed the game (keep in mind, you'll need two copies or rather two serials to play against each other), you just start it up and try to run it. If you're still having issues, you'll have to explain what your issues are so we can help fix the problem. Share this post Link to post
Guest Stevie_K Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) You won't have to use a router. I did this once using just a cable. If you connect your computers with such a cable, you should be able to see each other's games in the LAN/Local lobby in most games. EDIT: The firewall may cause trouble. If so, try and disable them momentarily to see if that helps. Edited November 9, 2013 by Stevie_K Share this post Link to post
Guest Mayo Posted November 9, 2013 Well, if it works, it works. Every time I tried it with just a cable, I could never connect properly. Some links on the internet said I needed a crossover cable, which is some kind of special ethernet cable. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted November 9, 2013 Yeah there are two types of network cables. A patch cable is used to connect a PC to a router, data flows one direction. A crossover cable can be connected between two computers, the data flows both ways, allowing the computers to see each other. Share this post Link to post
Guest Stevie_K Posted November 10, 2013 Yes exactly. That part I didn't remember, but yes if you want to do this using only a cable it needs to be a crossover cable. Where I live they tend to be blue or green, but I'm not sure if that's an international standard. Share this post Link to post
Gben 20 Posted November 11, 2013 In Sydney - crossover cables used to be red; Blue for standard - but it's been year's since I bought one. Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted November 11, 2013 The colour of the cable doesn't really indicate it's purpose. I've seen all sort of the colours of the years. Share this post Link to post
