New System Up and Running - Possible Faulty Video Card

Recommended Posts

As I posted in this thread, http://forums.cncnz.com/viewtopic.php?t=6151, I have rebuilt my PC with new parts. All is good except one thing. I suspect the new Leadtek Geforce 7600 GT video card to be faulty. I started to re-install some of my games like Renegade, FEAR and Empire at War. I was getting horrible performance from FEAR and then when I tried Empire at War I was seeing artifacts and graphic corruption on certain builings etc.... then to add to that when I would quit from EAW or FEAR the WinXP desktop was unstable and parts of it were showing corruption (like odd looking purple coloured lines and a messed up start menu).

Since we have another PC in the house that has the same brand Geforce 7600 GT card in it I installed that card into my new system and everything worked perfectly. None of the problems I described above happened.

So before I go ahead and seek a replacement does anyone agree with me or does anyone have any other possible suggestions or solutions?

I'd go seek a replacement, as I 'm sure you've installed the latest drivers

From those symptoms, yeah, I'd definitely suspect the video card. That sucks dude :(

You do have a warranty on it though, right?

Yes I do, I only just got the new card this past Friday, it was installed into the new computer that night. It was until Saturday night when I started to install some games that these crap problems started with it.

And now today I ran another test with FEAR using the Geforce 7600 GT from the other computer in house. Performs perfectly as I expected it to. With my Geforce 7600 GT installed it was getting horrible frame rates and artifacts on the screen.

So it looks like my Geforce 7600 GT is heading back for replacement.

The suspected faulty card has been sent away. Currently running with a borrowed card for now.

Here is a screen shot from F.E.A.R of what the card was doing....

Noticed those ugly black lines. I was seeing similar things in Empire at War as well.

Oh, damn, I thought those lines were part of the quality settings, I didn't know they had to do with the video card. I'm gonna need to get mine replaced eventually too.

Once you get the new card get xfire and I'll play FEAR with you. ;)

Just a quick update about the faulty video card. I sent it back to the place where I ordered it from last week. It took a few extra days and they replaced it with a brand new one. So new it still has a factory seal stuck over the heatsink/fan

The replacement 7600 GT is installed now and works perfectly. Now I can say my system upgrade is officially complete.

Next purchase, I might get me an LCD monitor. Nothing wrong with my current Philips 19" CRT but I was using my Dad's computer with his Philips 19" LCD and it just feels so much better on my eyes and a much bigger desktop to.

... I've always had problems with FEAR even though I've got a beast of a system. I've got a EVGA 7900 GT KO Superclock, and even though it can run everything else that exists at max everything, without lag, I still get lockups in FEAR. I'm eventually going to RMA it to EVGA for the artefacting problem that some of the first-gen 7900s get, just in case. 7600 GT is a damn solid card. Not DX10 though. Only problem with it.

FEAR can bring on top of the line system to it knees, it can take some tweaking to get running well.

I'm happy with it, as for DX10 who cares
