Can't install Renegade - Invalid directory error message

Recommended Posts

Okay I've never seen this problem before in all the years I've been installing stuff on my PC.

I'm trying to install Command & Conquer: Renegade and when it comes to the screen where it says:

Select a directory where Command & Conquer will install Renegade

...the default selection is:

C:WestwoodRenegade

...which is fine by me so I click 'Next' to continue the installation and I get an error message saying:

Warning.

The path is not valid. You cannot install to a Windows or System directory. Please select a different directory.

Now obviously C:WestwoodRenegade is not a Windows or System directory but just for posterity I tried a different directory and I got the same message. And since then I've tried everything. I've tried directories that exist, directories that don't exist. I've tried turning off my firewall (ZoneAlarm), Crash Guard and my antivirus program and rebooting and running setup from Start Menu (Start, Run, D:Setup.exe) and nothing works. I keep getting the same error message.

I bought this game in a collection pack which came with 4 other CNC games (Tiberian Sun, RA2, Firestorm and Yuri's Revenge) and they all installed flawlessly and ran flawlessly. All except Renegade which just refuses to cooperate and I haven't the faintest idea why. I'm at my wits end and completely stumped.

I need help.

Thanx in advance.

Oh yeah, my system specs are:

AMD Duron 892 MHz

SiS730 Chipset

CD-ROM 52X - Creative CD5230E

40 Gig hard drive (of which 20 Gigs free space remains which is plenty room enough to install Renegade)

Uh... I don't know what else might be relevant. In this collection pack that I bought, Renegade seems like the best of the bunch. I'd really like to play it.

What OS are you running?

If possible, try installing to a different HD or partition?

I'm running Windows 98SE. Unfortunately, I only have one hard drive with one partition.

When i still had W98SE Renegade installation worked fine for me. But i never ran the game under 98 because it kept crashing to desktop. When i installed W2K Pro back then it DID work and since quite a long time now under XP Pro it works fine too.

I think its the OS causing this crap. 95/98/ME are MS's worst work ever :P
