Luk3us 63 Posted February 20, 2007 Now in the next few days I'll be putting in a new motherboard and PSU... Now the XP I have is OEM. Which means it sucks. Anyway, I know the work around with regard to the motherboard so thats not a concern. What is, is that if I put in the new PSU, will XP consider that a violation of the license agreement and thusly stop working and demand I go get a "new" operating license? Cause ATM I can't get a hold of XP or Vista for at least another few weeks, and I sure as hell aren't going to play around in Linux till then.... So.... Will the PSU **** things up or should I be sweet till the mobo goes in? Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted February 20, 2007 PSU shouldn't be a problem but the change of motherboard will be. Not only because of the WinXP OEM/reactivation thing but because it will be a shock to Windows trying to boot once the new motherboard goes in. Even if you reboot your current XP install on the new motherboard it will probably unstable, prone to crashing etc. You will still have traces of the previous confiuration mixed with your one and so on...... I suggest you use this as opportunity to back up your important files and stuff, install your new PSU and motherboard and your other parts of course , then format your HDD and start with clean install of WinXP SP2. Use your XP OEM CD together with a copy of SP2 and slipstream the service pack into it, you can create your own WinXP install CD, follow this step by step guide http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/w...sp2-bootcd.html. You can forget the entire slipstreaming process if your XP OEM CD is a more recently released one with SP2 already included. One more thing to mention about that WinXP reactivation stuff. You can reactivate over the internet about 5-6 times. If Windows won't reactivate that way you just have phone Microsoft and spend a few minutes on the phone. Share this post Link to post
Luk3us 63 Posted February 20, 2007 Yeah I thought the PSU wouldn't matter. Ring up Microsoft huh... I'll have to go check their 0800 number here then if thats teh case.... Share this post Link to post
Sonic 296 Posted February 21, 2007 Try activating WinXP on the internet first. Share this post Link to post
kraft 0 Posted February 25, 2007 OEM version has a limited amount of activations which can be done, if you've used them all or something like that you can ring up Microsoft (with the 0800 number) and you can get them to reset it, Just say you're doing a computer tech course and you'll be formatting your PC lots and stuff like that. SO you dont need a new OS licence you can just get your current one reset. I've done it many times Share this post Link to post
