Generals Use of Saving under My Documents

Recommended Posts

Guest sarujin

Hello

I think I've discovered why Generals has been locking up and freezing ingameplay on my pc.

Because Generals saves under the My Documents folder under XP it has problems.

Since my PC is set up as a network pc, the My Documents folder altho it appears on my pc is actually stored on a network server. Plus since i'm only running a 10mb Lan connection this is probably getting overloaded and freezing the game.

So the ways I've thought of fixing it are putting in a 100mb connection, or changing where Generals saves its files.

So do any of you know how you can do this? and is it actually possible?

thanks

sarujin

Someone asked about this before but after all the searching and testing it was impossible to change the location of where Generals stores its data. It seems to be hard-coded into the game that it stores all data in the My DocumentsCommand and Conquer Generals Data folder on any computer.

Using tools like Tweak UI to change the location of a users My Documents folder doesn't help either, it makes Generals produced errors about missing files.

If you search either our Tech Support forum or Generals/Zero Hour forum you may find that thread posted by someone else asking a similar question.

This whole storing of game data under the My Documents folder is a silly idea I think, EA do it for all their games, other game companies are doing it now to. If they want to store game data outside the installed games folder at least give users an option to change its location.

True, I find it a very bad thing to have saved games there too.

However, during normal gameplay, the game should not be using any files there. You can run the task manager, and view the amount of network traffic you're having. If you exit the game after that, you should still be able to see the network traffic during the time of the freeze.

Note that savegames, being 1-2 MB in size, should only take 1-2s of network time on a 10 Mbit LAN, so that might not be it.

Yeah well it would be nice if I could bring up the taskmanager when the game locksup, but alas I can't it kills off everything, the only way to fix it is power down or restart.

But anyway thanks a lot for all the help both you.
