    Project Update: 5th April 2011

Hello guys! Is the work on patch still being made? I hope the project's not abandoned
  2. I'd like to add some new soundtracks to Red Alert, but afaik it can be done only by hacking the EXE file and editing counquer.eng string table. Any tips on modifying the EXE? Is edtitng some values with hex editor enough?

    multiple tank build

This is the case for Vanilla Red Alert and Counterstrike addon. Aftermath addon as well as 3.03 patch disables all the benefits of the multi-factories.
  4. What is the point of westwood EXE launchers? Many westwood games have these. For example DOS Red Alert has RA.EXE which is not the game executable itself, but launches GAME. DAT which is the real exe for DOS Red Alert. Windows version had normal RA95.EXE file till the 3.03 patch which hid the real exe into RA95.DAT while making RA95.EXE a launcher which launches the DAT file. What are these launchers for? What is the difference between running the game from launcher and renaming the DAT file and running it directly?
  5. I hope somebody here knows what is this: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/command-...ameCoverId,708/ http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/command-...ameCoverId,709/ Front cover clearly states "DOS CD-ROM" while back cover has only DOS-version system requirements written. AFAIK there was NO DOS-only version of RA1. What gives?

    DOS-only Red Alert? O_O

So it might be some rare release....

    DOS-only Red Alert? O_O

Fixed links. Also the same site has boxart for the standard Win/DOS release which has requirements for both versions listed and "Windows 95 & DOS" written on the front cover, unlike the aforementioned weird version which says "DOS CD-ROM" on the front cover and doesn't list Win 95 requirements.
  8. Thanks, tried this one too. But still no use. I guess my problem doesn't lie in the performance since the game runs fine and smooth even with the heavy action going.
  9. I get some sounds skipping in the game when the four of them play at the same time. For example, I place a building. There are several sounds playing at one - music, "pop" sound of building placing, another sound of building erecting, and an announcer saying "new construction options". And one of the two building sounds, either "pop" one or "erecting" one gets skipped. When music is off these sounds don't skip so it seems that RA in DOSBox has a three sound channels limit. Changing "blocksize" and "prebuffer" in DOSBox doesn't help. Configuring "Channels=" line in redalert.ini is no use. And when I play RA with VDMS instead of DOSBox, sound works as it should without any skippings. Can anyone help? inb4 play with VDMS instead
  10. Actually I've got Worldwide Warfare and plan to get both addons' original big boxes. My question is just a curiosity They released Firestorm as freeware, maybe we could ask someone from EA directly about other addons?
  11. Well, speaking of C&C and RA1, DOS versions don't have any extra stuff compared to Win versions, but I played DOS versions first back then and somehow I love these zoomed-in graphics. And yeah, DOS DOOM is >>> any windows port There was really something special about DOS gaming back then. I take Dune 2 over Dune 2000 or Emperor any day
  12. At least I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes DOS versions of C&C and RA1
  13. My PC is roughly same performance wise (Athlon 64 + 2048 ram) and DOSBox config is same too. Could you please post your redalert.ini soundcard config?
  14. There is no difference performance wise but loading times become really shorter. Forgot to add, you should embed dos32a not with ra.exe, but with game.dat (renamed to game.exe)

    Mystical twist

What I find strange is how chronal vortex is rare in the PC version compared to PS1 one. Honestly, on the PC the only way I could see it is by editing rules.ini and making it appear as a silver crate "bonus". On PS1 it apeared almost every my skirmish game.
  16. There's only one dos32a, so just download the latest version and embed it into the ra.exe replacing dos4gw.
  17. Strangely, that dos4gw swap file trick makes my RA1 load much slower. I prefer using an alternative dos32a extender, that really reduces loading times when using dosbox.
  18. There is a patch for Red Alert made by Nyerguds that make RA infantry "normal" size like the infantry from Tiberian Dawn. So, has anyone tried to make the patch that makes TD infantry "oversized" like in the RA? I tried some time ago but had got stuck because of commando needed proper resizing, and I couldn't make him look good.
  19. Roadkill

    C&C infantry size

Also I noticed that in RA95 intermission map, that is 320x200 wsa, doesn't have scanlines. Or maybe RA has different wsa drawing functions? on the topic, what util is good for the TD shp editing? OS SHP builder has some glitches with TD shp saving.
  20. Roadkill

    C&C infantry size

I tried to do this by OS SHP Builder (with the help of XCC mixer since SHP Builder corrupts TD shp files after saving) but some pixels just didn't resize right compared to the RA sprites. looks like RA sprites are also fixed manually offtop: Nyerguds, you are TD guru, right? Maybe you know if there is a way to hack the scanlines out of the C&C95 videos?
  21. Does anyone know how to trigger chrono vortex in PC Red Alert? I've seen it in the PSX port only. For PC I tried different versions (original, counterstrike, aftermath), I tried different patches, I tried to edit rules.ini to increase vortex appearence percentage and to make chronosphere charge faster - none of this worked...
  22. Oh, I just found (on another forum) that I can trigger the vortex in singleplayer missions by adding "ChronalVortex" as a crate bonus in rules.ini, and then picking up that crate in the game. That was the first time I've seen the vortex in PC Red Alert despite being playing it for years O_O. Looks really cool. It's strange, how in the PSX Red Alert the vortex appears much more frequently (and looks like some thunder cloud rather than the vortex).
