Red Alert 2 Fan Creates Red Alert 2 Via UE4 In Virtual Reality
pchote replied to Plok's topic in Command & Conquer News
A clarification: as far as we can tell from the video the gameplay isn't just based on the OpenRA RA2 mod, it is the OpenRA RA2 mod. It looks like he's replaced OpenRA's sprite-oriented rendering with a full-3d renderer built in UE4 (OpenRA's game logic is already fully 3d) and redone the interface to suit the vive. This is really impressive work! A bit disappointing that he linked to slye-fox's moddb profile but not the OpenRA website though A couple of obvious OpenRAisms can be seen at 2:55 where he captures the tech airfield (two engineers run to the center of the building, and the second one runs out again) and at 7:15 where the first three tanks line up outside the war factory and the fourth nudges one out of the way. Edit: The author has confirmed this at- 15 replies

The closest I can find is Bug #118, which we interpreted as being due to a quirk of our settings textfield entry. What resolution are you trying to set? The behavior you describe should only happen if you are trying to run in a window with resolution less than 800x600, which is the minimum that our current ui will fit in without chopping off UI elements.

Our domain registration was supposed to autorenew, but our host stuffed up and let it expire without giving us any warning. They have yet to responded to our emails asking them to fix the problem. We should have things fixed within a few days, either with open-ra.org, or a new domain. Unfortunately, this means that our game server listings are also offline so you must use direct connect to a server's ip:port. We are organising and sharing servers in our irc channel, #openra on freenode.net.

Our (recent) goal is to stick to one public build per week (released each Saturday), but the helicopter crash was bad enough to need an out-of-cycle fix. The other changes were already done, so there was no point in not including them

This was fixed a few days ago in build 20100910-2. We now render all sidebar icons in temperat.pal.

What operating system are you running? Under windows there are start menu shortcuts for both mods. http://www.open-ra.org/mods.html

Our forums are now online, and a new build has been uploaded on our website. Also, please read our FAQ. If you have any further questions feel free to ask them in the forum.

While we have recently picked up a few international developers, our core team (chrisf, ytinasni, beedee, alzeih and myself) are all in NZ, alumni of VUW. www.sleipnirstuff.com was very active for RA2 and Generals modding. It's still around, but has been largely inactive for the last few years.

Waraddict, We've had a few people reporting problems with creative sound cards, but we don't have any hardware to test with. It would be really helpful if you could join us on irc and help us debug this; your machine is well above our minimum specs otherwise.

As one of the main devs on openra, I must say that this sudden explosion of interest is both great, and at a very unfortunate time. We have just finished merging some major features, which has introduced a large number of bugs and instabilities into the game :/ A couple of points that we don't really emphasize on the website: - We have built the game from the ground up to be extremely moddable. The ra and cnc games are both built as standard mods, and we have built a full set of developing/modding tools including a map editor. - We are still very much alpha-quality software. Our intention was to keep under the radar until we had something polished enough to release with a bang, but one of our fans has outed us - Built by kiwi's We've had a few comments on performance; Bear with us. Despite our 8-bit appearances, we make full use of modern computing resources. In our current state, a netbook just doesn't cut it with their tiny cpu caches and crappy intel graphics chips. We have some medium-term fixes in the pipeline to make things easier on lower spec'd machines, but we're developing this in our spare time so it may take a while. If you have any other questions, most of the action happens in our irc channel at irc.freenode.net #openra -- pchote (aka Sleipnir for those who remember me from the old days)
