Dayummm... people like her should be the villain(s) in the next Red Alert sequel. Mind control indeed. Yuri'd probably have a woody for a lady like this. Question regarding various (?) C&C game timelines.
Worker posted a topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
I think I've chosen the right forum in which to post this message, as I suspect the decisions made concerning the matter which I want to address were made back when Tiberian Sun and RA1 were released, if not beforehand. First, what I do know: 1) Renegade takes place during the era of Tiberian Dawn. (There is or was a MOD that updated it to the Tiberian Sun era, and less relatedly, changed the setting to Red Alert's.) 2) Red Alert 1, 2, Yuri's Revenge and the upcoming Red Alert 3 take place in an alternate past/present to our own that diverged from what we know as history around 1930, with Albert Einstein developing and making use of a time machine rather than or in addition to his work regarding general relativity, and changing the balance of power amongst the world powers of the era. 3) Tiberian Dawn. Tiberian Sun, Renegade and Firestorm take place in a possible future 30-40 years from now. My query is thus: Is Red Alert's present the past of Tiberian Sun/Dawn; i.e., are the two games set in the same timeline at different points, or are the two completely separate entities/universes only associated with one another under the Command & Conquer game platform? Please post me back if you can at all answer my questions. Thanks for your patience with me, and hopefully your responses. -Worker -
Question regarding 'Command & Conquer Collection' instal
Worker posted a topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
Heyo! I couldn't find a forum here regarding Tiberian Sun and TS: Firestorm specifically, but I did note a few Tiberian Sun posts here, so I thought this might be a good place to ask this question. (Sonic, my apologies if there is a TS forum but for some reason I missed it when I looked.) With the C&C Collection, you get a list of four serials for use with the games included (RA2 & Yuri's, TS & TS:Firestorm, and Renegade). Note that five games (well, 3 games and 2 expansions, but I digress) are listed. There doesn't appear to be one listed for Tiberian Sun: Firestorm. That probably means that one isn't required- all of the four that are listed are all on one sheet, and if one was required I think such a mistake would make a stink big enough that even a gaming wallflower like me would've known by now. Anyway, I just wanted to ask so I've got it straight- _does_ Firestorm require a serial for installation, or not? Thanks! -Worker -

Cygnus; I will admit, the groundmaps in Tiberian Sun have a fair bit more detail to them. I just wish the units weren't so damned _small_. That, and NOD's SDI satellites doing orbital strikes out of nowhere. Can't say that's a bad deal, danke for the data. I have three copies of TS and Firestorm in my 3 C&C Collections, so I probably won't be investing in a fourth set... still, that's a pretty good price, even in Cdn. dollars. -Worker, overall. PS: Yeah, I do like Rush. Cool that they're local, too; I finally remembered what you asked me. -
Question regarding 'Command & Conquer Collection' instal
Worker replied to Worker's topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
Have you or anyone else seen that error before? Cygnus X-1; Not that I can remember, at least the few times I've been on the XWIS servers. Didn't have a lot of success playing there, I'm afraid; one fellow who was quite patient with me ('R4MPMNMN' was his alias, or something like that) as it took a while for me to load up YR at my end, reported that I was not connecting at my end, while I thought I was... he was able to join games with other players there, so I have little doubt the trouble was at my end. Going to have to look into that. Anyhow, good to hear from you again! -Worker, overall. -
serial number question
Worker replied to LawyerNinja's topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
LawyerNinja; True, true. I think C&C King is probably right about finding a copy locally (i.e. the chance you'd find it at a local software/computer store)...still, I agree that it's not a huge investment. As it is I'm happy with RA2, YR and TibSun, but if the option comes up eventually I think I might 'order out' for TD. -Worker, overall. -
serial number question
Worker replied to LawyerNinja's topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
C&C King; Followed the above link, and it doesn't look like TD is available on Abandonia anymore. An organization of gaming companies, called ESA, is 'protecting' the game, and as I understand their explanation to be, is no longer available for download there. I decided to follow the link to the ESA page, and there were about 15-20 main homepage links (as opposed to being directly relevant to TD), the only one of which I thought would have to do with TD being Electronic Arts. Sorry to drop this on you, but I thought it best to report my findings rather than have folks going there and being disappointed. -Worker, overall. -
i want the originals and what are they?
Worker replied to a topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
<shrug> Only excuse I've got is that I haven't played Renegade yet. The other games in my C&C Collection I've at least tried (Tiberian Sun/Firestorm) or play regularly (RA2 and YR). I like Tiberian Sun, but IMO the AI and general gameplay is a lot different than Red Alert 2 or Yuri; the AIs in TS are a _lot_ smarter and sneakier. That, and even at low resolution the units and buildings are tiny compared to their counterparts in RA2/YR. I have trouble doing unit groupings because of it. Still, the cutscenes are more than worth it. -Worker, overall. -

Madbadger; For a while I had the same trouble. Stores like the aforementioned Business Depot/Staples have caught up to a fair degree here in Canada in the past ten years, and we've got strictly-game stores like EB Games and software outlets like Compucenter now that were either not present or not as well known in the past. Business Depot isn't strictly a software store- in fact, they've cut down on non-business software like PC games considerably in the past 18 months- but the bulk of the games I have now I bought there, including all three of my C&C Collections, the RA1 set, and games that go back as far as 'The Ultimate Doom' and 'Duke Nukem 3-D'. I don't know what the exact situation in the UK is in regards to PC games; still, if you're having trouble getting a physical copy in England, it shouldn't be especially difficult to order a copy overseas, although it'd certainly be more expensive i.e. shipping. Another option might be a completely online purchase, as it's becoming more common now. Hope this helps. -Worker, overall. -

Worker replied to Worker's topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
Cygnus; First, I must apologize for my delay in responding. I did receive your privatemail a little over a week ago, but I wasn't in the best of moods that day (long story, no biggie) and I ended up- in this case, by accident- deleting it. I wasn't at all upset by your mail, though, and I'm sorry if I at all gave that impression. Secondly, I've successfully logged onto XWIS's server a handful of times since we last spoke (thanks again to you and Chickendippers) successfully; haven't played a game yet but that's not far down the road. My username? Sure, give me a sec... it's not Worker; somebody had already taken it... my username on RA2/Yuri/TS/Firestorm is 'Twopaw'. Feel free to give me a pop sometime while we're both on if you want, and thanks as always for your interest! Peace and out! -Worker, overall. -

Worker replied to a topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
Confirmed here in Canada as well; the source of all of the C&C games I own are the three C&C Collections I bought a year or two ago. They ran out for a while- had the dudes there check now and then, and they'd thought it'd been discontinued as well- but a whole mess of them (the C&C Collection) showed up about 3 months ago, and AFAIK as of about a month ago there were still several left in-store for $25 Cdn. This one's a bit harder to find- I know of two stores here in Toronto that have carried it recently; I bought the RA1 collection (above) for my brother for an Xmas present last year at one of them, and I think the other one was another outlet of the same chain (Business Depot/Staples) but I could be off a bit. IIRC, the price wasn't more than $20 Cdn. Anyhow, that's my two bits. Peace and out! -Worker, overall. -
Question regarding 'Command & Conquer Collection' instal
Worker replied to Worker's topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
Cygnus X-1, good afternoon! <nod> I took a look around the Forum shortly after posting the message you replied to (and thank you kindly for that ), and in a message a fellow posted asking if anyone still played Tiberian Sun, I found a link (I think Chickendippers posted it) for XWIS. I went to the site and Dled it; it was late last night and my box decided to hang while I was logging onto TS (I _think_ I followed the instructions on XWIS' use correctly...) and it was late enough that a second attempt had to wait 'til today. That will probably happen in the next hour or so. Renegade I wasn't sure about (the servers being up, I mean) but Generals; yeah, I'd imagine since it was quite recent EA would be shooting itself in the foot to cut support only a year or two after releasing it. And I'm glad RA2 and TS are still supported by EA; I may have on the few times I've tried caught their servers temporarily down (and I suspect I've made my share of mistakes in trying to do it properly, too ). In any case, all of this is very welcome news. Thank you kindly for filling me in on the server status, Cygnus X-1, and with any luck I'll be on either the RA2 or TS server sometime today. -Worker, overall. -
Question regarding 'Command & Conquer Collection' instal
Worker replied to Worker's topic in Command & Conquer / Covert Operations
Shawn; I believe I'd attempted to or succeeded in installing Tiberian Sun by that point. I submit that before the C&C Collection, I had no experience whatsoever with the Command & Conquer series, of either vintage (like TS and TD) up to the current day (like Generals, which I don't have as yet). I did have some minimal 3rd-person strategy experience with Starcraft and its expansion, as well as Warcraft 2 (apologies if we're not to speak of the Other Big Company in the Forums). Because of my lack of experience with C&C, I had no reason to suspect installation and play of a C&C title and its expansion (in the case of both Tiberian Sun/Firestorm and Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge) was basically the same as SC and WC. (I do have Warcraft 3 and its expansion, but not the appropriate equipment to run it as of yet.) I believe I installed Firestorm shortly afterwards. Secondly, I have commonly had a very anal-retentive view on processor speed requirements- I generally take them very literally, which has in the past regrettably delayed my playing a given PC game. I only recently attempted to install games such as Diablo 2 (which I'd had since December 2002) and local stocks Red Alert 2 and Yuri's, all three of which I've played (albeit with hiccupy video sequences- but good ones!) someway into as well as skirmishing. I regret that Westwood apparently no longer supports RA2/YR and TS/Firestorm's multiplayer platform servers; I hadn't any chance to give it a shot. I do admit that all of this does sound laughable, Shawn, but I really am quite new at this. Appreciate your patience, in any case. -Worker, overall. -

Luk3us; coolness. Thanks for getting back to me, and providing the answer to my query. Sonic, unless someone wants to further this thread to any degree, I'm finished with it and you're welcome to dispose of it as you see fit. Peace and out! -Worker -
Yo! New on the Forums, but I've been frequenting CNCNZ since I glommed onto the C&C Collection a few months back. Came on today to find, in horror, that the graphics have been changed! I really don't like the new font used, nor the graphic behind it. I loved the old CNCNZ logo- the graphics used struck from players' screen captures, and the font was so clear I had no trouble remembering the odd spelling of the website's name. If there's any chance the old design could be brought back, I humbly submit my vote in favour of it. Thanks! -Worker

Yo! Before I ask my question, I need a little clarification here. First- when you say 'cheats', do you mean debugging cheats (as in the Console for Half-Life) or hacks/trainers that modify the code itself? Will check back. Thanks! -Worker, debugged.

Renegade: The Inspiration of the new FPS Generation!
Worker replied to Saracen's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
No prob. It's cool enough that you remember it; even though what I saw of it was only a fragment of the whole (never could find it anywhere other than mailorder, and at that point I didn't have much of a budget - risky enough doing m-o in-country, but I've had utter hell doing it between Canada and the US because of inconsistencies on either side of the border about what bank needed to access what funds via the money order... bleah.), it's held a special place in my heart a) because it was even funnier than DN3D and the anime used throughout it. I don't know more than a handful of folks (yourself included) who even remotely remember it; I don't know anyone who's ever played the shareware version (let alone the full version) at that. Anyway, I pull the archive out occasionally to vent some frustrations. No lie- it works for that even better than Duke Nuk'em 3-D. ? I don't understand what you mean by that. I certainly am not trying to purposely confuse you. Well, not yet at least. I know I tend to have wordy replies, but that's just me. There are older versions of Unreal that I've seen (but never played- still chugging along in my 'old jalopy' (p1-166MHz), at least for the next few weeks. Gonna be getting me a byootiful 3.56GHz AMD in a little over a month. ), as well as the first Tribes, but I don't have enough experience with any of them to say one way or another. I _have_ played, T2, briefly, over on a friend's private computer network... quite honestly, I didn't have enough time to get used to it. I was used to games that required no jumping. Gotten a lot more experience with newer (such as they are) FPSes like Quake 2 (last Xmas, got the full version CD along with 3 other titles in a package) and Half-Life (got the HL Platinum Collection late last year), so I'd probably do much better now. I will never, ever understand why an HEV Mk-4 doesn't have a headpiece, or a helmet, or something. Even Barney C. has a helmet. Maybe the folks at Black Mesa figured their skulls were tempered or something. 8) What sort of range of vehicles can you bop around in playing Renegade, anyhow? No worries. As you may have guessed, I've never even _played_ Counter-Strike. Would you believe my first exposure to the game was through an anti-FPS 'documentary' that biased everything against Half-Life and CS and Doom and all of them? Tripstain 'reporter' villified the average FPS as a murderer's game, even all the while a reasonable Valve rep was trying to say- repeatedly and never able to convince the twit- that what you were 'killing' were pixels, bluntly, not murdering other people. There was even a clip with a woman reporting that her son 'looked like he wanted to kill me' when she pressed the Reset button on his computer while he was playing CS. Jeezus biscuits, what a load of... how the heck do you think someone would feel, 'ma'am', if you were typing out an essay in Word and somebody hard-boxed your computer? You'd be pretty upset, I think. They pulled every trick I can think of to mesh stuff stripped out of context to try and make the 'unenlightened' viewer think FPSes were murder-makers. They still play it at conventions as little more than a blooper reel. Anyway, I'm getting a little off-topic. CS is (apparently) not akin to most games or FPSes I've played. Frankly, I think with how terrible I am at multiplayer Q2 I'd absolutely blow pineapples at Counter-Strike. It seems to require a lot more patience than your average shoot-em-up. (Mind, I must be sounding quite naive about all this. Keep in mind, I've barely scratched my way on HL, and have never played Team Fortress or Counter-Strike, even though I have my own copies of both along with Blue Shift and Opposing Force.) Well, that and the debugging codes. All things considered, I really don't have a lot of experience with FPSes where I can actually _die_. Sucks to be mortal sometimes. Anyway, over to the next supplicant. Peace! -Worker, beknighted conduit. -
Renegade: The Inspiration of the new FPS Generation!
Worker replied to Saracen's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Yo! Found this topic today, and I thought I'd add something to it. Have any of you folks heard of a game called 'Shadow Warrior' that was designed by 3-D Realms using pretty much the same engine as Duke Nukem 3-D? Compared to most of the FPSes in recent memory the graphics weren't much to write home about, but instead of Duke Nukem's satire of gratuitous mysogeny and John Wayne machoness, Shadow Warrior was a massive satire of 'chop-sockey' martial arts films and a nice big wad of Japanese animation (Anime). Favourite scenes of mine included 'Master Leep's Throne' (Eeeeuw, smell like dead baboon in here! -Lo Wang) and the quote Lo Wang voices when he picks up his second Uzi: "Be proud, Mr. Woo!" (as in John Woo, legendary action film director). Anyway, enough of the Realms commercial. There were at least two vehicles you could use in the shareware episode (never could find the whole thing locally): a forklift with a machine gun that you could plow into the bad guys, and a big mother of an Abrams (tank) with a big effing gun of its own, and could render anything you rolled it over into Ground Food Concentrate #15. There were limits, though... I don't think the game designers intended you to roll either of them all through the level; you found them in wide, flat open spaces (or at least with connecting throughways you could fit the tank through) and with the forklift area you had to all but lure the bad guys besides a couple in plain sight to blow them away with the forklift. Still, it was the first game I recall coming across that had vehicles (albeit-limited in their use). Thanks for listening! -Worker, overall. -
Not fond of the new site graphics/header.
Worker replied to Worker's topic in Site / Forum News & Discussion
Oh, certainly not! I must not have been clear enough; I meant just the CNCNZ.com old header pic (what we both quoted in our messages recently), as opposed to the entire HTML for the old site. But one way or another, I humbly withdraw my request; if I do want to see it now and then, I can always return to the beginning of this topic where you've quote it. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Victoria Day is a holiday held on the nearest Monday to May 24th in Canada. I humbly stand corrected by Phreakly: I _know_ somebody told me this at some point, but I'd forgotten the importance of the circumstances in which it's involved with Canada's origins. Thanks for filling it in for me, Phreakly! Sonic, I had thought incorrectly that it was a holiday celebrated particularly amongst the countries of the Commonwealth, but apparently it's chiefly recognized in Canada. How was yours, Phreakly, BTW? -Worker, overall -

Fair enough. Something like this is a labour of love; as an artist myself I think I understand how much a place like this- a creation and a work- can mean to you. You think no less of we users, mind, but you certainly deserve a fair share of the creation and upkeep of this place. As to the layout, that _is_ something I prefer in the new set-up. The old 'directory tree' in the left-hand box on the way in was confusing, especially when dealing with expansions like Yuri's and Firestorm. I love the speediness of this site, which has never changed- instant access to MOD and Maps, not to mention plenty of extras. You run a tight ship, skipper. I humbly submit that I enjoyed seeing Havoc's mug in that left navigation bar. Renegade looks like a really swell game; I bought it as part of the C&C Collection several months back, but haven't played it yet (box isn't fast enough. currently running on a Pentiun 1/166MHz, but should have a 3.56GHz AMD in the next four or five weeks)... still, I'm looking forward to it. So I was right about the quotes, then! Coolness. It sounded like the sort of quote you'd hear a C&C guy or gal popping (especially the Yuri quote- I mean, come on, who the heck else in the C&C series would say something like that? ). Sonic, hope you don't mind me including the image in my reply; just want to make sure anybody else who reads this is up to speed with what we're talking about. Yeah, that's the one. I don't know what limitations you have in how (or if) you can spread it around, but I'd love to have a copy I can keep to look at and remember fondly, if it's workable. Thanks for such a speedy and friendly reply, Sonic. A pleasure to make your acquaintance. BTW, if I'm remembering my world geography with any accuracy, NZ's part of the Commonwealth(?), so I hope I don't err in hoping you have a great Victoria Day! Peace-out! -Worker
