Both games are popular and very well made. Can't say much for either though because I've never played them, But Gears of War 2 is the #1 game on Xbox Live right now.

Haven't played Gears 2, so no comment.

As for Fallout 3, I liked it a lot, the main quest is kinda, so so, and the ending, is lame to say the least. But the rest of it is great. Oh, important thing, don't take the game as an FPS, cause if you do, you'll be disappointed. But overall a very satisfying game. :)

well if you've played any of the fallout games before you'll know vaguely what to expect... if not, i'll give you a quick (ha!) description.

gameplay wise (from what i've seen. haven't even installed it but yah XD) it's similar to the original 2.5d fallout's (as in 2D pixel art that LOOKS 3D) gameplay in that it still holds true with the "survival" elements, and RPG elements... though instead of being like a standard RPG, you generally have a game "goal" and anything else you do along the way is fair game.

in the first, original fallout, you had to get a water filter or something for your fallout bunker so everyone inside could continue living there peacefully. if you didn't complete this after 100 or so days, it was game over. if i remember right the second one you were in an above-ground village and you have to find an "eden" kit because everything in and around your village is dying... i don't -remember- a time limit for that one, but you still had to get it to win the game xD

fallout 3 is the same in this element from what i've heard you have to find your father or something like that, but once again how you do it is your own method. it's much like the eldar scrolls series, where you do your own thing. depending on how you treat people depends on how they react to you and how it affects later gameplay.

the resounding RPG feature of fallout has always been the stats system... where you pick out your skill points and such into qualities you want. they generally cover anything you could possibly imagine, so you have lots of customization...

now. it DIFFERS from the original games in that it's 3D, first person. depending on your viewpoint this can be good or bad, as it can offer further or limited visual awareness for the game player. (for instance, you ain't gonna see the super mutant sneaking up behind you if you aren't listening to your headphones or whatever, but if you were looking through a rifle scope you could probably see further then a top down view would let you see XD)

in response to make it more realistic, all your technical details, stats and information (as well as an encyclopedia type thing) are on a wrist mounted computer monitor type thing (the pipboy) which is a neat lil feature methinks... and like i said, there is a lot of customization, as well as kickass things - for instance there is a gun that fires anything you put inside it (though i can tell you from a friend's trial and error that shooting teddy bears at a super-mutant ain't gonna do squat...)

aaaanyway. onto GoW2.

now i gotta say, i HATE the gears of war series with a PASSION. -everything- in the game is a rip from other games or movies... no doubt you will be bombarded with GoW rabid fanboys screaming and foaming at you that it's the best game ever made and the plot is amazing. this is true. because it's been taken from other successful things XD

if you can get past this, the GoW series -is- actually quite a good game. (though i hate to admit it) my only real complaint with the game besides the ripping thing is the controls... they are quite simple, yes... but the fact you have one button to do multiple things is annoying. the "A" button (green one) on the controller basically controls every movement you make with the enviroment... this includes jumping over small walls, flipping directions on a wall, ducking and hiding behind a wall and the "roadie run" which is basically a squat run XD

it's a good system but as you can imagine in the heat of a multiplayer battle, it is very frustrating and has gotten me killed many a time during the period i played GoW1 online... trying to duck behind a wall and jumping over it into a crossbow bolt... or trying to jump over a wall to escape an enemy or grenade and ducking down against the wall. and if you are doing a roadie run and get too close to a wall or defendable terrain, it auto-sticks you xD so you suddenly do a lil flip and back against the wall. no doubt you get used to it with practice but it WILL be an irritation first of all...

personally i would avoid GoW completely and say get a PS3 and go with Resistance 2... but y'know, who am i to argue with popular fads? XD one thing is sure, you will never go short of a game with GoW... the downside to this is a lot of the people playing are under the age restrictions... XD

just remember that with the 360 you have to pay out for everything to get online (either an ethernet cable or a wi-fi kit which i bought and didn't work for me no matter what i did, aaaand you will need a 360 headset and the timecard things. you can get a 12 month Gold Live card for the price of a newish game. i heard that the PS3 is free to play online but i haven't bothered to check it out in detail seeing as it costs THREE HUNDRED FRIGGIN POUNDS to buy the PS3 console with all the required basics... though it does double as a really cheap blu-ray player. so tough call x3)

good luck, sorry for the rambling and i hope this is SOME use XD

I own both (actually won gears 2 from a local radio station, w00ters)

Me and my brother are about 3/4th of the way through Gears of War 2 campaign. If you liked the humour and mindless chainsawing in the first game, Number 2 is pretty much a shoe-in to your games collection. It's pretty much more of the same with some extra silly plotlines thrown on top and cheesy moments that scream awesome-ness in your face as the heros spout one liners while killing enemies.

It is pretty much just more of Gears 1 with better graphics and a couple of new weapons thrown in. But from what I hear there is no rail-shooter segment (not quite) like those weird mine carts in the original game that got annoying.

Multiplayer is pretty fun with lots of new modes and game types to play. Although for a month or two it had crippling issues with the game lobbies and matchmaking. Which could take upto 5 minutes to find a team to play with. I think it's patched out but I don't have a gold membership anymore so I'm not sure if it was fixed as of yet.

Fallout 3:

I'm a fallout fan, so i've been following the development of this game before this game was even announced (there was another game which was going to be fallout 3 but it never happened)

If you liked oblivions open world and huge areas to explore, you'll like FO3. Thats pretty much how the world is.

It is a good game but it's still an RPG, not an FPS, as stated above. If you do try to play it in real time (without using VATS, auto-targeting system) it probably wouldn't be very good, as all bullets are effected by chance, meaning they won't go where the crosshairs are, unless you have very high skill in those weapons.

The mainquestline is sorta short and people think the ending is lacking (even though it has 6 different endings, based on if you are good, evil or neutral and depending how you play it out) and the game does end at the end (no more playing, game over) but you can easily go back to a save an hour or so before and just not replay the last mission(s)

There are a few other sidequests and a ton of locations to explore. The main draw for FO3 will be the three DLC packs being released over the next 4 months. The first coming very soon which will add a new singleplayer campaign set in alaska in a virtual reality type of simulation. Apparently adding around 4-6 hours of gameplay.

Two other DLC packs will add even more content in the future. So support for this game will last for awhile.

Summery: Both are good games, at least give them a shot but they might not be your cuppa tea. Play for a few hours and see how it goes. Enjoy.
