Tiberian Dawn Mod Concept Update

Recommended Posts

Command & Conquer 3 total conversion mod, Tiberian Dawn, has posted two new pieces of concept art. The new concept art is accompanied by some lengthy essays on the subject of the Tiberium Universe. One article that details the Tiberian Dawn mod's stance on the Global Defense Initiative, while the other focuses on the nature of the First Tiberum War.

WOW. I'm so impressed I'll say it backwards... WOW.

And I'm talking about the dialog, not just the pretty pictures!

What is perhaps less easy to understand is how GDI would function in the real world. As cast in the original C&C, they were very much “the good guys”—their actions were always wholesome and easily justifiable—as though we were meant to identify with them. In this day and age, however, a world-spanning military-grade police force is something many would find hard to stomach. This is one of the concepts that will be explored in Tiberian Dawn. How does the world truly view GDI? Does it view them as protectors? As invaders?

Just fascinating...

Trying to accurately depict war puts one in a difficult position. Using it as the basis for entertainment is even more complicated. It is not a thing meant to be experienced by the average person, and once it is, it inevitably changes them. We’ve all seen movies in which war is a key element and we’ve played games where we take part in waging war.

All too often, the end result of doing so is to glorify war. War becomes a game, a sport, a duel. We receive accolades and achievements for dealing out death in first-person shooters, with no remorse or pain felt. In RTS games, we send hundreds, if not thousands, of men to their deaths with only the words “You Are Victorious” to show for it.

Quite moving, quite lofty goals, but how will they achieve this in a game. These are the sort of concepts I'd love to see developed in novels, but I can't see it effectively played out in a game, and still be entertaining.
