Crash problem inside Kane's Wrath

I'm suffering from the crash problem but I'm not sure of the exact sequence of fixing it. It seems like in the threads I found searching around people were just saying "I fixed it!" or "Figured it out!" or would at least say something like "I did this and this" but I don't get the sequence of events or the order...

 

Basically the problem I'm having is I enter a game and can maybe play for a minute but then it crashes to the desktop. I have the settings turned all the way down and I'm running Windows XP. It seems to be a common problem that I can't figure out how to fix. If it helps to solve it, I can play Timberium Wars just fine. I'd like to be able to play some skirrmishes.

Basically I fixed the problem, here's what I did:

-Uninstalled both games

-Installed both games

-Installed both patches

-THEN launched the original

-THEN launched Kane's Wrath

-Changed Shader detail from low to medium

 

And it runs!
