Direct CD/DVD Printing

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with printing onto discs? Last time I was in a shop I saw something called LIGHTSCRIBE, which added a 'media' tray for discs as well as other traditional paper. Apparently there is a traditional INKJET onto white discs, and perhaps lightscribe onto silver discs.

But I was wondering if there was much practical difference between the two other than preference?

I need it to label discs for others, that need to be more professional other than handwritten note.

LightScribe is way better that ink jet printing on to discs. Both my computer and laptop have LightScribe drives, I can't say that I use all that often but the results are satisfactory. Not sure what you mean by a media tray though. LightScribe uses the DVD burners laser to scribe an image or text directly onto the label side of a DVD. Once your data is written to DVD you simply flip over the disc and using your LightScribe software, create and then scribe your label onto the disc.

http://www.lightscribe.com has lots of information, so there's a good starting point. You can even download free software such as one you see below.

Thanks Sonic, the media tray refers to an actual inkjet printer that has a tray/holder for the disc so it can print on it.

I guess knowing now that cd/dvd burners have lightscribe abilities - I should have considered that for the new comp... but I need a local printer so it's ok.

DD - thanks shades of Black will be fine.

Bear in mind that Lightscribe cannot do color jobs.

Yeah, the colour is achieved by whatever colour your DVD disc is. As you can see the in the pic above it asks you to select the disc colour.
