Win 7 x64 Lock Up Issue

Recommended Posts

For the past week I've been experiencing some lock up issues. They are intermittent, as in doesn't happen every time I use the computer but enough to be annoying. When it does happen its always after the system has been turned on and Windows has just booted. Everything locks up (freezes) and the only option I have is to kill the power and reboot. Once the system has loaded back into Windows the screen will go blank, refresh back to normal and then this pops up in the notification area....

Of course this gets logged in the Action Centre and it suggests obtaining an updated display driver. Already using the very latest from NVIDIA.

It has to be a software/driver (obviously display driver related) issue because I had the exact same hardware running Vista 32bit and never had any issues. But lock ups/freezes can be RAM related as well from what I understand.

Quick key system specs:

  • CPU: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 GHz
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5QL-E
  • RAM: 4 GB Corsair DDR2800 Dual Channel
  • Video Card: EVGA 9600GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E
  • HDD: Western Digital 640 GB SATA2
  • PSU: 500w Silverstone
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Nothing is overclocked.
